Whatever Happens Next (Triplets Book 2)

Jo does not do center of attention, but Brooks does. And what she has planned is all for him.

  “Eek! Do you have it?” Chelsea was barely containing her happy bounce.

  I raise the hand holding onto the Fury team store bag. “Cameraman and social captain will spotlight her in about five minutes.”

  “Oh my God, I can’t wait to design the nursery.” Chelsea kisses me once more, takes the bag, and jaunts over toward Jo.

  I seek out Cam, who’s standing guard near the counter full of food.

  “Uncles,” he grins.

  “Yeah,” I sigh.

  We’re both watching Jo as she pulls the baby jersey out of the bag, the Labelle name stitched on the back with Brooks’s number. Mom is standing beside her, grinning ear to ear, and Dad is on the verge of blubbering like an infant.

  As the stands begin to fill, the social captain addresses the fans, his mic’d up voice blasting through the arena. Some of the Fury players lift their gazes, but majority continue their warm up when the guy asks the crowd to direct their attention to the jumbotron.

  Some athletes have rituals and don’t like their focus to be broken. Luckily, Brooks is not one of them.

  Chelsea squeezes into my side. We all stand around Jo as they call for Brooks’s attention. Jo stands, facing the rink and holding that tiny blue jersey up with pride as she smiles down at Brooks. My brother grins, lifting his stick in the air in celebration, his teammates clapping him on the back.

  “That was done in true Brooks fashion,” Cam says.

  “Your parents are scary good.” Chelsea wraps her arms around my waist, laughing.

  “How so?” I ask.

  “Well, your dad has the matchmaking powers, and your mom called the baby thing.”

  I nod, remembering Mom’s prediction at our barbecue. “Damn. That’s right. Know what that means?”

  I time it just right, waiting for Cam to load his mouth with popcorn shrimp.

  “Cam’s the last one.”

  I clap him on the back as he hacks up a lung.

  I don’t know about other authors, but I’ve come to learn that my characters are bad influences. I fully engross myself in their lives to the point that I take on their traits during the writing process. For example, when I was writing Jo from First to Fall, I went out and bought three pairs of Converse. With Chelsea, I gutted and redesigned my entire closet. This could become a very expensive habit.
