“I can feel it everywhere—except the plains of monsters. Wherever the beasts roam, the power of the Sea is dark to me. I cannot feel it at work there. I cannot connect to the Earth’s magic. I cannot control the water and ice. Out there, in the lands of monsters, the elements have grown wild. They are out of control.”
I glanced over at Damiel and sighed, “You must think my poetic musings quite ridiculous.”
“No,” he replied. “There is a definite beauty in the elements, in their raw power.”
“Wild and out of control. So unlike you,” I teased him. “You always keep things under perfect control. You never allow things to grow out of control or wild.”
“That’s my job. And it’s yours too. As the Sea Dragon, you must keep the elements in control, in balance.”
For a moment, I forgot we were speaking of the elements, rather than about the two of us. My mind flashed back to when we’d connected through the daggers. I recalled the moment I’d caught a glimpse of his wild and uncontrolled soul. I remembered how it had felt when that feral soul had touched mine.
Being linked to the Sea element, to have control over the element of water and ice all across the Earth, was a powerful experience. Still, it was nothing compared to when my soul had touched Damiel’s.
“Your father does not approve of your talking to me,” Damiel said quietly.
I grinned at him. “You were the one who came to speak to me.”
“Oh, he definitely does not approve of that.”
“If it were up to him, we’d never see each other again. But if it were up to me—”
“Careful,” Damiel warned me. “He can hear us.”
I glanced back at my father. He was watching me and Damiel.
Right, supernatural hearing. I’d been so caught up in the memories and the feelings I’d shared with Damiel, that I’d forgotten what I’d known all my life: angels had ultra-sensitive hearing. You had to watch what you said if one of them was close by.
On the other hand, screw it. This was my life.
“If it were up to me, I would see you again,” I told Damiel.
“As would I.” He continued to stare forward, out the window.
“My father wants me to stay away from you. Far, far away. He is convinced you are on a mission to ruin me by exposing every little, damning secret I have.”
Cadence, it’s not your secrets he’s worried I will expose, Damiel spoke inside my head, where no one else could hear us. It’s his own secrets.
Before I could ask him what he meant by that—what he knew of my father’s secrets—Nyx’s clear voice cut through the room’s chatter, “Today, Cadence Lightbringer has taken her place as the Sea Dragon and Angel of the Elemental Expanse. And Storm Castle has taken the first step toward healing.” Her voice was as clear as a bell. “In two weeks’ time, our new Fire Dragon will come and make the castle complete once more. We will put the Earth’s elements back in harmony, and the Legion will grow stronger once more.”
Cheers rose from the crowd.
“Yes, the Legion’s future is looking bright,” Nyx declared. “And I have another piece of good news. Something miraculous has transpired. For the first time in Legion history, two angels are magically compatible: Cadence Lightbringer and Damiel Dragonsire. And so, as First Angel, I am decreeing that they will be married at once.”
