“Are you sure you don’t want to see it all through?” Rebecca asked Bart.
He thought about it then shook his head. “No. I’m just glad the truth is out there. I’m ready to move on from this wretched world.”
I laughed. “It can be wretched, for sure. But it sure would be useful to have somebody who can do things on my side.”
Rebecca frowned. “Really? You’re looking to replace me or something?”
Bart laughed. “Don’t worry, I’m not coming between you two. Now that I know who killed me, I have a lot less anger in me so I can’t really affect the world anymore. Believe me, I tried.”
Kane was looking at me as I was talking to the ghosts in the back seat of his van.
“What?”
“I’ll never get used to that,” he said.
“Who says you have to? Aren’t you moving on anyway? Your work here is done.”
“I think I might stick around for a little while longer.”
I didn’t say anything but I quite liked that idea. I hated to admit it, but Kane kind of grew on me. It felt good to have someone there in the living world who could have my back.
“Here it is,” Kane said when he parked the car.
We were in a wooded area in the middle of nowhere.
“What do you think?” I asked Bart.
“I don’t know. I never was much of a nature person…”
“Tell him to hold his horses,” Kane said, anticipating the ghost’s reaction.
All four of us got out of the car. Kane led the way. It was then that I noticed that we were on top of a hill.
“Wow,” I said when I saw the view. The whole of Silver Bells could be seen below.
“Look up there,” Kane pointed to a spot in the distance. It was hard to make out at first but then I could see some tall buildings.
“It’s a city,” Bart said excitedly.
“He likes it,” I said to Kane.
Kane looked pleased. Bart flew around a bit, taking in the views and the beautiful greenery around us.
“This place is perfect,” he finally said. “I think I’m ready.”
As soon as he spoke those words, a door of light appeared some distance behind him.
“I can feel it pulling me. It’s like a magnet,” he said.
“That’s normal,” I explained. “Look at it.”
He turned around and tears started forming in his ghostly eyes. “It’s beautiful,” he said. “It’s the most beautiful thing I’ve ever seen in my life.”
Rebecca kept her distance. She felt the pull too and she didn’t want to be pulled into the vortex by accident.
“Thank you,” Bart said to her. Then to me. Then to Kane. “Thank you all.”
“Put in a good word for me, will you?” Rebecca said.
“I will,” Bart said. Then he waved goodbye. Then he made his way to the light. When he was close, the light sucked him in and then it dissipated, as if it was never there at all.
“He’s gone,” I said to Kane.
“Where to next?” He asked.
“I have to be home by lunch but I have the rest of the day off.”
“The pub it is then,” Kane said as we walked back to the car.
“Breakfast of champions? You must be joking?”
“There’s only one way to find out,” he said.
Rebecca took one last look at that hill and the location where the door of light had appeared.
Then she hurried back and took her seat in the van.
I couldn’t help but laugh. Helping the dead cross to the other side always left me feeling energetic and warm all over. I can’t say it hurt that Kane was there, too.
I just hoped he was driving us to a place a little more exciting than a pub.
