Old Promises

“Good. I'm glad that we had one on hand, then.”

Crowley reached out and took a piece of cake and had his mouth open to take a bite when Elsa-May said, “What happened with that old case you were working on?”

He lowered his hand. “Ah, that’s been a puzzling one. I could never get it out of my head.”

“Then you should tell us about it.”

  “Maybe another day.”

“There’s no time like the present.” Elsa-May bit into a piece of cake.

He shook his head. “It’s too late in the day to even begin.”

“It’s so good to see you again. We’ve missed you,” Ettie said as she scooped tea leaves into a teapot and then added the hot water. “You were never grumpy like Detective Kelly.”

He finished chewing his mouthful. “You should feed him more cake. Cakes like this.”

Elsa-May raised her eyebrows. “We don’t, do we, Ettie?”

“We used to bake for him, and he was nicer back then.”

Crowley grinned. “There’s nothing like cake to—“

  “Soften a grumpy detective’s mood?” Elsa-May asked.

“Yes. The job comes with a great deal of pressure, lack of sleep, and a lot of worry. I’m glad I’m out of it.”

“Pie didn’t work for Greville next door.”

The detective leaned forward. “Did you say Greville?”

“I did. That’s the name of our new neighbor. His wife seems lovely, but he’s mean and he doesn’t like dogs.” Elsa-May looked around. “Where is Snowy, Ettie?”

“He followed you to your room.”

“Oh. He must have stayed there and gone to sleep.”

Later that night, when Crowley had gone home and Elsa-May and Snowy were in bed, Ettie turned the lights off and peered out the kitchen window where she had a good view of the neighbors' house. All the lights were out, from what she could tell, except in the living room. She could see they had a TV on. That was all she could see between the blinds.

Ettie shrugged off the thoughts about the odd neighbors and was left alone to ponder her life. She’d raised many kinner and all had stayed in the community but two. She’d had a good marriage to a man she was in love with and she had many friends. Closing her eyes, she said a silent prayer of thanks for her life and wondered how long she had left. At her age, she was thankful for each and every day.

“What do you have in store for me next?” she said out loud to God.

Thank you for reading Old Promises.

I do hope you enjoyed it.
