“It’s eight a.m.,” Nix laughed as Eve stumbled out of bed.
“Eight a.m.? Really? The exhibition opens in, like, two hours!” Eve exclaimed.
Nix had secured a spot for Eve in one of Manhattan’s top art galleries and her exhibition was opening at ten o’clock that morning. Nix had seen her paintings and they were damned good. They were the cityscape, painted from a bird’s eye view, a view a person could only get if they were flying over the city, something Eve relished now that she had accepted her dragon side.
“You feed Ethan while I shower, and then I’ll get him ready while you get ready. Relax, Eve. We’ve got loads of time and everything is going to be perfect, I swear,” Nix said. “Your mom will be here soon for Ethan too.”
Eve nodded, but she didn’t look convinced. Ethan’s cries pulled her from the room and Nix smiled to himself. He knew the paintings would fly out; Eve was that good an artist and the collection was so unique. That wasn’t the only reason he was smiling, though. He had another surprise for Eve.

“I can’t believe they all sold,” Eve said, shaking her head.
“I can,” Nix grinned, pulling her into his arms. “I told you they’d sell, didn’t I?”
“How come I’m the one who painted them and you’re the one who gets to be smug?” Eve laughed.
“I don’t know,” Nix said. “But I’m liking how it all worked out.”
They stood quietly for a moment, taking in all of Eve’s paintings, each one with a yellow sold sticker in the corner of the frame.
“Me too,” Eve said after a moment. “And I guess you are allowed to be a little smug. I never would have believed in myself enough to even show these paintings to anyone if it wasn’t for you believing in me.”
Nix kissed the top of Eve’s head.
“I’ll always believe in you,” he said. “Now let’s go up to the roof. The pack are waiting. They wanted to throw you a celebratory party.”
Eve smiled and slipped her hand into Nix’s. He led her up the stairs, his heart hammering in his chest. He pushed open the fire escape and they stepped onto the rooftop. The pack weren’t there. Instead, the rooftop was filled with candles and rose petals. Nix heard Eve gasp as she stepped outside. He turned to her and smiled. He dropped to one knee and Eve’s eyes filled with tears.
“I know this is fast, Eve, but there is no doubt in my mind that I want to spend the rest of forever with you. Everly Stanton, will you marry me?”
“Yes,” Eve said, without a second of hesitation.
Nix got to his feet and pulled Eve into his arms. He kissed her like he had never kissed her before, feeling his body lighting up at her touch. He jumped back after a few minutes and Eve frowned.
“What’s wrong?” she said.
“I forgot to give you the ring,” Nix laughed.
He fished in his pocket and handed a small, blue box to Eve. She opened it and gasped when she saw the huge diamond. She slipped the ring onto her finger and admired it, turning her hand this way and that, dazzled by its brilliance.
“We’d best get going,” Nix said.
“Going where?” Eve asked.
“There really is a party. I just wanted to do this first,” he said.
He kissed her again.
“Eve, you have made me the happiest man alive,” he said, and he meant it with all of his heart.
