An Egyptian Affair (The Regent Mysteries Book 4)

"I would say, my dear sister, that the past day has been momentous for you."
Rosemary's adoring gaze lifted to Mr. Maxwell, then to her sister. "Indeed it has. I have never been possessed of a stronger conviction than this: there's only one man in the world with whom I would want to spend my life."
"And has Mr. Maxwell gone down on bended knee?"
A look of distress came over his face. "I've erred. I was supposed to go to my knees and beg for your hand?"
"No, you goose," Rosemary said. "You've done everything perfectly." She turned to Daphne. "I'm not precisely sure which of us did the asking. I knew Stanton would need a bit of a nudge from me."
How naturally her lover's name rolled off her tongue, Daphne thought.
"I would never have been so presumptuous," Mr. Maxwell declared.
"I am sure our Papa will love you, Mr. Maxwell," Daphne said.
Rosemary regarded her sister. "I know you're disappointed in the outcome of your inquiries, but this expedition has been the greatest, most exciting thing that's ever happened to me."
Daphne nodded. "In spite of the fact we weren't terribly successful and in spite of the fact you were almost killed, and in spite of the fact that murdering Frenchman got away, I have to say I've loved every moment—save the in-spite-of moments, that is."
"I must offer you felicitations, Maxwell. My wife and I have known for some time that you two were perfect for one another."
Mr. Maxwell meekly thanked him.
"Oh, I've just thought of the most wonderful thing!" Daphne said. "When we were at the consulate today, a traveling English clergyman stopped by. We can get him to marry you!"
Rosemary threw her arms around the second man she'd become betrothed to. "Oh, Stanton, would that not be wonderful? We could share a cabin on the ship back to England!"
Jack cleared his throat. "I was thinking about an expedition to Thebes."
Rosemary squealed like an ecstatic child. "Oh, Stanton, is that not wonderful?"
Maxwell nodded and eyed Jack. "I'm delighted you will be able to manage the journey to Thebes."
"If you're married, the two of you will be able to share a tent," Daphne said. Her shimmering gaze met Jack's as she looked forward to more moonlit desert lovemaking with her own husband.
