Case 537

Page 3

by Shiralyn J. Lee

“So it seems as though they had patched things up.” I suggested.

“So I thought too. They emerged from the room dressed and Bailey was just about to leave. She told Victoria that she would go with her to tell Simon that they were over and that he would have equal rights over the baby. Victoria lost her temper and told Bailey that she was still going ahead with the scam. She would still have to remain as her secret lover if she wanted to carry on seeing her. Bailey insisted that she ended it with Simon, but Victoria refused. I’m not sure how they got into a struggle but I did hear Victoria’s last words…Bailey no!”

“Why didn’t you report this to the police?”

“Victoria made us promise. When she told us about Bailey and about the great sex she had with her, she told us that under no circumstances were we ever to tell anyone about their relationship, no matter what.”

“Thank you, Melanie. You’ve been very helpful. Do you happen to know where we can find Bailey?”

“Yes she lives in Bishop Avenue. She rents a room in her sister’s house.”

  “We’ll be in touch, Melanie.”

“Do you think she’s telling the truth,” Emily asked me as we got into the car.

“We have to believe her for now.”

  Chapter Five

We turned into Bishop Avenue. It was a short street with only seven houses on each side, and trees covering the driveways. Bailey’s sister’s house was basic in appearance, with a front lawn, a few plants around the borders and a truck parked in front of the garage.

“Can I help you?” a woman asked. She came from inside the garage.

I got out of the car and introduced myself. “We’re looking for Bailey Lawson. Can you tell us where she is?”

“Yes, she’s inside the house. I’m her sister, Joni. Is she in trouble?”

“Can we speak with her please?”

Joni invited us into the house where Bailey was sat at the kitchen table. She was a butch lesbian. Her hair was shaved at the back and sides with a few spiked up pieces on the top. She was plump in her size, wearing a checkered shirt and denim jeans. She was staring into a mug of coffee that she was holding on to.

“Bailey, these ladies are from the FBI. They want to speak with you,” Joni told her. She didn’t even lift her face to look at us, but acknowledged us with a grunt.

“Bailey. We have reason to believe that you murdered Victoria Parker.”

She looked up at me, her eyes were red and dark circles from lack of sleep had appeared beneath them. Her mouth quivered as she took in what I had just said.

“My life is over without her,” she whispered. “I want to die.”

“Bailey, can you tell us what happened the night that Victoria died?”

“We argued. I was angry with her because she wouldn’t stop seeing Simon. She wanted me, she told me that much, but she wanted Simon’s inheritance and to worm her way into his father’s law firm. She had this crazy idea that she could have it all and keep me as her lover.”

  “Did you murder her, Bailey?”

“Murder her! I loved her. I would never have harmed her. Why would you think that I murdered her? Oh god, I didn’t do it, I swear to you I didn’t do it.” She began to cry uncontrollably.

“We have a witness to your behavior that day. So far you have confirmed everything this person has told us.”

“I didn’t murder her. When I left her apartment I was angry. I even punched the wall in the hallway, I’m sure that I left a dent in it. I would never harm Vicky. She was the love of my life. When she blocked me from contacting her, I had no choice but to go and see her. We argued and then we made love, the way that Vicky likes…liked it, rough. When I left her she was alive and well.”

“You do understand that we’ll have to take you in for further questioning.”

“I’ll answer any questions that you want. But I will tell you now, that whoever killed my Vicky is still out there.”

  ♦♦♦

Bailey had been held for two hours answering every question that had been thrown at her. She proclaimed her innocence throughout and her lawyer was now pushing for us to either arrest her or let her go.

I watched the interview with Emily, from an adjoining room. We had given Jack, a male colleague, the job of interviewing her. He was thorough with his questioning and very intimidating when he needed to be. But Bailey wasn’t backing down and never changed her story after being asked the same questions over and over again.

Whilst I stood watching through the two way mirror, the door opened and closed behind me. Stiletto heels tapped along the wooden floorboards.

“How is it going?” a female voice whispered behind me.

I turned around. Rosa was standing in the room.

“I didn’t know that you were still here.”

“You didn’t answer me,” she smiled.

“I’m not sure. She’s mentioned everything that we were told, except that she is adamant about not murdering Victoria.”

“I’ve secretly been studying the case. I don’t think she did it anymore than you do.”

“What makes you think that I don’t believe she did it?”

“Because you would have been in that room giving that girl hell for her sins.” She had an open file in her hand and lifted it up to my face. Pointing at a name, she said, “Here’s your murderer.”

She was right about me believing that Bailey was innocent. That girl was distraught over her girlfriend’s death.

“How can you be so sure about the murderer?”

“It’s what I do best.” She turned and left the room with a graceful walk.

“Emily, tell Jack to let her go, we’ve got someone we need to talk to.”

We headed back to the complex. Not only were questions rolling around in my mind about Victoria’s death but now I had questions about Rosa.

“You still have a thing for her, don’t you,” Emily teased me as she drove.

I glared at her, not answering her ridicule.

It was a hot day and many students were walking around in skimpy outfits after finishing several hours of classes. We found Melanie by the pool, sunning herself. She wasn’t alone either. In the lounger next to her Simon Young was sleeping.

Emily stood at the side of his chair whilst I questioned Melanie further.

“What happened after you heard Victoria say those last words? Let me quote, ‘Bailey, No!’ You need to be very clear with your answer.”

Melanie began to look shifty. She nudged Simon’s arm to wake him up.

“What’s going?” he said, acting surprised to see us. “Haven’t we been through enough?”

“I won’t ask you again, Melanie.” I said, gritting my jaw.

She looked at Simon and then back at me. “Bailey didn’t do it.” Her voice was filled with shame and remorse.

“Can you please tell me who did?”

“Melanie, shut up. She won’t be answering anymore of your questions, not without a lawyer present,” Simon said firmly.

“Why would I need a lawyer, Simon? I did nothing wrong.”

  “Tell me what happened, Melanie.”

“When Victoria answered the door to Bailey, I called Simon. I thought that he had a right to know what was going on behind his back.”

“Melanie, that’s enough. I calling my father,” Simon shouted.

“I thought that Victoria was being callous by intentionally getting pregnant just to marry into money, well it just sickened me. I told Simon the truth whilst they were having their argument. He turned up when they were having sex.”

“Shut up, Melanie. That’s enough.” His father hadn’t answered his call yet and frustration was clearly taking over him.

“Whilst they were having sex, I kind of felt sorry for Simon. He was in my room and we could hear everything that they were doing and Victoria had yelled out that she loved the way that Bailey fucked her. I put my arms around him and comforted him. The next thing that I knew was that we w
ere on my bed and my skirt was over my waist and my underwear on the floor. We made love quietly. It was more for Simon’s enjoyment rather than mine, an act of distraction. When we heard Bailey leave, she slammed the door and it sounded as though she punched the wall in the hallway. She’s a big girl. I wouldn’t want to be on the receiving end of that. Simon got up and before he had even pulled his pants up he was confronting Victoria, calling her every name under the sun. He shoved her and she shoved him back, I think she may have even slapped him across his face. His temper had turned to rage and he had his hands around her neck. She couldn’t do anything so I tried to pull him off her. He let go of her and slammed me into the wall. It winded me so I couldn’t get up to help her. She was backing away from him, not knowing that she was walking toward the open door to the balcony. He said that he was going to kill her and blame Bailey. As he pushed her over the balcony she yelled, ‘Bailey, no!’ I felt sick and really wanted to call for help, but Simon told me that if Bailey was blamed for this, then we both stood a chance of getting away with murder and our careers and our families wouldn’t be affected. I’m so sorry that I lied.”

“Melanie Thomas and Simon Young, you are both under arrest for the murder of Victoria Parker.”

Emily read them their rights before having them taken away to the station. No doubt that Simon’s father would have the best lawyer represent his son and try to push as much of the blame onto Melanie as he possible could. But Melanie stood a chance of not going down for this if she made a plea bargain and testified against this scum. His lack of concern for his unborn child was an indication that he was a cold and calculating murderer. He was probably plotting his next move whilst he was still fucking Melanie.

  Chapter Six

Kate’s ordeal with Rachel had unnerved her over the past few days. She hadn’t left the house and whilst I was at work, she would have someone come over until I got home. This was becoming an inconvenience, not just for both of us but for our friends as well. So I went against my better judgment and made an appointment for her to see my shrink, Martha Raney. Maybe Kate would have a better relationship with her than I do. I drove her to her appointment and whilst she was inside Martha’s office, I waited in Starbucks just around the corner.

During this time I received an email from Rosa asking if we could meet up soon. She wanted to apologize in person for being so forward in my office. I was beginning to feel apprehensive about her intensions. There was one thing about Rosa, when she wanted something, she went after it and right now I was her target.

I had waited a long time after our break-up to see her again, but our paths had never been given the opportunity to cross, until now. She had confused me in such a way that I couldn’t be myself when I was around her. She made me dizzy and excited and needy but at the same time she also made me feel resentful, hurt and lonely. The spark between us was a sexual one and in the beginning of our relationship I would have, if allowed by law, married her. But now it was me who standing in her shoes and my role had been replaced by Kate. I could read her like a book, she was concerned over Rosa’s sudden arrival but she was too scared to act on it. She knew how I had felt about this woman and how long it had taken me to get over her. I would be a fool to lose what I have with Kate over meaningless sex with an ex-girlfriend.

I emailed Rosa back: Rosa. I think it would be wise that we keep our personal lives separate from our professional ones. You were the love of my life once, and what we had together will never be matched, but I have a new life now with Kate. I would never choose to jeopardize our relationship and as long as you are working at the bureau I would appreciate it if you could respect that. I know that you understand what I am asking of you. Paige.

Kate’s session was over with Martha. When I picked her up she seemed relaxed and more at ease.

“I’m glad that I met with her,” she said.

“As long as you are comfortable talking to her then I’m happy too. Now buckle your seat belt up, I have to get my baby home safely.”

“Paige, why don’t you like her?”

“It’s not that I don’t like her, Kate. I have become immune to her. She’s more like a burden to me, a constant reminder of what happened to me as a child. Every time that I see her office door my memories come flooding back. I need to forget about him, not forgive him and that’s what she expects from me. I’ll never forgive what that bastard did to me.”

“I’m glad he’s dead. He didn’t deserve to live, not after what he did to you and those other poor girls.”

“Karma caught up with him. Now how about we forget this subject and focus on us. I think that we should have a second engagement party. The first one didn’t quite go according to plan and I also have something that I want you to show off.”

  “What is it?”

I pulled over to the side of the road.

  “Look in the glove compartment.”

She opened it up and found a small black velvet covered box.

  “Can I open it?”

  “Go right ahead.”

The look on her face was priceless when she opened the box and found a diamond ring snuggly fitted into the white silk insert. I knew she’d like this one as she’d seen it beneath the glass display case at the jewelers. It was a center diamond surrounded by a cluster of sparkling tiny diamonds on a band of white gold.

I removed the ring from the box and lifted her hand up, placing it on her finger. Once again I asked her to marry me. She said yes…
