Nico ran his hands through his hair and settled back, ruminating over the events of yesterday. When his cell went off, he leapt to get it.
Disappointment smacked him when it wasn’t Ava.
“What’s going on, Nico?” It was his father.
“We’re recruiting for a new chef today—” Nico started.
“I mean about Ava? Elsa is most upset.”
Nico shot upright. “Ava? What do you mean?”
His father reported that she left for Denver this morning, according to her mother but that Elsa was no better off knowing why. He was trying to find out on her behalf.
Nico got up and paced the room frantically. Maybe he should have kept on calling her, instead of punishing her for his jealousy by playing it cool. He scratched his forehead and tried to think.
“I don’t know anything, Papa. I didn’t know she had left.” Anxiety scratched his insides and he was suddenly left feeling helpless.
Now he really had to wonder. Had she been that angry with him that her only recourse had been to jump on the next flight home? Or was there more to it?
“Let me make a few calls, Papa, and I’ll let you know.”
Nico hung up and dialed Gina immediately on her cell. He looked at his watch. The flight from Verona would be landing here in Rome around now. He slipped on his jacket, getting ready to rush to the airport. He had to find out, apologize, fix it and talk some sense into her. Anything.
Gina answered and if she was surprised at him calling her directly and not on the hotel number, she didn’t show it.
“Mr. Cazale, I needed to talk to—”
He cut her off. “Gina, where’s Ava?”
“At the pensione, I think.” She sounded puzzled at his question, before quickly adding, “But Connor Beachcroft left a package for you this morning before he checked out.”
“He’s gone?”
“He flew out this morning, Denver via Rome, I believe.”
Nico’s heart missed a beat. “What’s in the package?” He asked her to fetch it and as he waited, he already knew.
“Do you want me to open it?” she asked.
“I know what’s in it.” His voice was urgent and angry. His heart pounded fiercely against his ribcage while he clasped the cell to his ear, wondering what to do next.
Gina gasped. “It’s beautiful!” The Flamentagostini bracelet.
“Oh, Mr. Cazale. But why would—”
“That’s all, Gina.” He was brusque and rude and he ended the call.
He fell back into his chair. There would be no need to rush to the airport now. He knew all he needed to know: why she had flown back, why she had returned the bracelet, and why Connor had been the one to hand it back.
Ava was sending him a sure sign, and she was too much of a coward to tell him to his face.
This was nothing to do with her misreading the scene with the journalist.
For reasons he could not fathom, she had decided to go back to Connor. She had chosen him over Nico.
Well, good luck to her, he thought miserably.
