City Minute: A When Opposites Attract Romance

“This is against everything I know and want. I’m going to get fired if I don’t though. That’s the only thing I’m certain of.” Sam kept her focus on the plate in front of her without looking up to meet Reid’s eye, but she kept on talking. “You know, I started this whole career path thinking I was doing to be doing something to help make the world a better place, to make some kind of a difference. And then a day like today hits, and I realize all I’ve done all this time is just make it an easier place for the big fish who already have it way too easy. And now, I’m stuck. I have no idea what I’m going to do. Maybe I’ll be able to find some way to work around it. That’s really the only possibility right now because I can’t see myself burying this complainant like they want me to. I’m not going to wind up getting some innocent guy thrown in jail just so he loses his credibility as a witness.”
Reid frowned, but he didn’t push it any further. He figured Sam would do what was right, but the possibility was there in front of her to go either way. It was at least good to see that she had some of the same priorities as him. She was rooting for the little guy as much as she possibly could here, at least for now. The two of them kept up the conversation while they ate, and he learned as much as he could about the entire thing without her going into enough detail to incriminate anyone or break the attorney-client privilege that she kept reminding him about. It was a little frustrating, but he got that too. She was doing the best she could without being in the wrong, and he admired her for it.
It was a little amazing that he’d managed to fall head over heels for someone who happened to share the same ideas about what was right and wrong as him. It would have been easy for Sam to just do whatever it took to get the job done. Most people in her spot would have. Reid had seen more than his fair share of them in the past few years working at the ranch. Business people came and went, but they were all the same. None of them really cared about each other, they cared about the bottom line, whether that was money or power or whatever. Samantha just wanted to help someone. It was nice to see.
After dinner, Reid cleared the table quickly, dropping the plates in the sink to wash up later, and offered Samantha his hand.
“Alright, Legs, I told you I had a surprise, but you’re going to have to trust me here.” He grinned and produced a red paisley handkerchief from the back pocket of his jeans before moving to drape it across her face and tie it around the back of her head, careful not to catch any of the dark hair at the back of her head in the knot. Sam just went with it and let him blindfold her and help her up to her feet.
“Reid, where in the world are we going?” She sounded a little nervous, but not scared. Reid took both of her hands and led her towards the front door of the apartment careful to make sure she didn’t trip over anything on the way there.
“You’ll see. Just trust me, Legs. I’ve got you.”
It was an awkward walk to get her out into the hallway and up the stairs to the roof. The stairs were the most difficult part to navigate. They took them one at a time until Sam found her footing and was able to finish the last flight with only a little help from Reid. The entire path there she was questioning him about what was going on, but all he would do was tell her to wait and see. Finally, when the door opened onto the roof and they could feel the cool night air hit their faces, she stopped.
“Damn it, Reid. I know we’re on the roof, but I have no idea why you’ve brought me up here. Can we take this blindfold off? Please.”
Reid laughed at her slight frustration with being blindfolded and moved to untie it and stuff the bandana in his back pocket of his jeans, showing her the setup he’d spent most of the afternoon getting together on the roof. Reid had found his way up here on the first day he’d spent alone in the city. The building wasn’t the tallest in the area, it wasn’t even close. You could see the skyscrapers with lights glowing all around. But it had a nice view, and the garden that had been build up here was at least a reminder of the ranch he’d left behind. Out of everywhere in the city, it was the place that reminded him the most of where they’d met.
Over the course of the day, he’d done a little shopping. He wasn’t sure where to find half the stuff he was looking for, but he’d stumbled across a hiking shop about ten blocks from the apartment, which meant he didn’t have to lug all of this gear too far. On top of that, he’d managed to run into the building’s superintendent on his way up the stairs and got clearance to use the roof for the night. The pieces clicked into place sort of like magic.
The roof was dark, except for the strings of tiny white lights he’d hung between the poles standing at the corners of the roof. They bathed the entire area in a soft white light that was enough to be able to make your way around without tripping over yourself in the dark. In the center of the roof was a canvas tent with an air mattress he’d managed to get back to the apartment on his own and set up by the gas fire pit the building manager had told him where to find.
The look on Sam’s face once he took the blindfold off was worth all the effort. He had no way of knowing if she’d ever been up here before, but he could guarantee she’d never been up here when it looked like this.
“So, what do you think?” Reid shoved his hands in his pockets and waited for her reply with a grin on his face that reached all the way up to his eyes, trying hard not to give away his nerves.
“I think it’s absolutely perfect!” Sam turned around and cupped Reid’s face in her hands and pressed a long kiss to his lips while he wrapped his arms around her waist to pull her in closer.
Chapter Nine
Being up on the roof tonight had reminded Samantha of the time the two of them had spent together on the ranch. She hadn’t realized how much she missed that weekend until she had a piece of it back. The two of them had just laid back and looked up at the few stars they could make out past the bright lights of the city. Only the brightest stars were visible. That night when the two of them had gotten drunk out by the fire on the ranch, the sky had been full of stars. At least it seemed like there was no one else in the world but the two of them once again.
They’d pulled the air mattress out of the tent by the gas logs and curled up together, just talking about the day. It was nice. If he hadn’t been here, Sam would have been crying into a takeout container or texting Debbie until she passed out alone in bed watching old movies. Instead, she was curled up with a handsome guy who she was falling a little more in love with every day on the roof of her apartment building. She couldn’t believe he’d gone to the trouble of setting all of this up just for her, even before he knew she was having a bad day. It was more than she could say of any other guy she’d ever dated.
She wouldn’t have believed the two of them would be cuddled up on an inflatable mattress on top of her roof when she first met him. She wouldn’t have believed Reid had this in him. He was supposed to be a bad boy, covered in muscles and tattoos. Instead, he was being the nicest guy she’d ever spent any time with.
“Well, Reid Spencer, who’d have thought we would wind up here?” She turned, pressing another kiss to his lips and winding her arms around his neck as their legs tangled together.
His laugh was deep and contagious against her lips.
“Not me, Legs. It was fate though, and I wouldn’t have changed a minute of it.” He stole another kiss and let his hands wander down her body as she molded herself into his chest and pulled him in closer with a soft moan. The two of them just lay there like that for a while, getting lost in each other until he pulled the red kerchief out of his back pocket with a sly grin.
“Want to play a little game?” He dangled it between them for a moment until she nodded, and he moved in to wrap the piece of fabric around her eyes again, tying it in a careful knot behind her head. She’d been here before, about an hour ago when the two of them had found their way up here. This time it was something different.
Taking her sight away from her made Sam pay attention to all the other things around her. The cool night air brushe
d across her skin and it contrasted deliciously with the warmth of Reid’s body against hers. When he pressed his lips to the hollow of her throat to steal a kiss, the heat of his breath sent a shiver through her body and caused the hair on the back of her neck to stand on end.
Sam caught her bottom lip between her teeth and bit down gently as his mouth worked lower. His fingers loosening the buttons of her shirt as he kissed his way down between her breasts and stayed there for a while. Every kiss was unexpected. Being blindfolded meant she had no idea what was coming next, and the moments between his mouth leaving her skin and finding it again were exquisite torture. She was uncertain of what was coming next or where his kiss was going to land, and each one made her catch her breath. He’d touched her like this before, but losing her sight made it that much different.
He pulled away, the cool night air replacing the warmth of his body, and she let out a soft whimper of frustration before she felt his finger on her, drawing a long line from the indent of her navel up the full length of her torso.
“Be a good girl, Legs. I’m not going anywhere, but I’m going to make sure I take my time tonight. I plan on enjoying this.”
She could hear that smirk in his voice without even seeing it. She’d seen it enough before to know how pleased with himself he would look. She forced herself to just lie back and enjoy the feeling of his hands on her body, though the anticipation between touches was almost too much to bear. Reid took his time peeling the clothes off her body, leaving her skin exposed to the chilled air. The breeze left chill bumps on her arms and legs that Reid took his time to soothe with his hands and lips. The combination of it all was enough to leave Samantha panting, her body tensed and ready for whatever was coming next.
“Reid?” She had no idea where he was when she called out to him. He’d pulled away from her body and was moving around the edge of the mattress. She could hear the rustle of his clothes from not too far away, but she couldn’t place the location.
“Yeah, Sam?” He was closer than she thought, almost close enough to touch, though she didn’t reach out for him like she wanted to. She was waiting for him to make the next move.
“I need you.” Sam used her hands to brush her dark hair out of her face and then push herself up to sit on the air mattress. She kept the blindfold on. She was enjoying the way it heightened all of her other senses and kept her focus on the way his body felt against hers.
“And what is the magic word, Legs?” His hand reached out, brushing a long line along the curve of her back before hooking his fingers into her bra and snapping the clasps open. She could feel his fingers brushing lightly along her shoulders and arms until the undergarment came free of her body and left her that much more exposed.
“Please…” His fingers disappeared again, moving toward her hips to hook into the fabric of her panties. This time he moved slowly, guiding them across her hips and down her legs until they fell from her feet to the rooftop below. The motions left her exposed and the cool air took her breath away.
“Good girl.” His voice came from close to her ear this time, the warmth of his breath curling against the skin where her throat curved into her shoulder. The words and the sensation sent a shudder through her as she waited patiently for what was coming next. This time it was a light touch, his fingers brushing along the curve of each breast simultaneously. Her back arching to push her chest into his touch. Her body tensed at the sensation and it drew a soft gasp from her lips.
“I like it when you get impatient, Baby Girl.” He laughed again, moving in closer this time until she could feel the warmth between the two of them. Samantha reached out, her fingers splaying across his back as he came in closer. She was surprised to find that his skin was as bare as hers. Her fingers traced out the lines of his body like braille as his lips claimed hers again.
She murmured against his lips, “Fuck patience. I want you now, Reid.” Her hands pulled him in as close as she could manage while her legs wrapped around his waist. She needed his body against hers, more than she had ever needed it before. Everywhere their bodies touched each other felt like an electric charge sparking between the two of them.
He groaned and moved into her, hands grasping her hips roughly to pin her down into the inflatable mattress in just the right position to slide between her thighs. He might have taken his time if she’d have let him, but she used the leverage of her legs to draw his hips into hers.
One forward surge and he buried his cock deep inside her, her body taking his full length in and sending a wave of pleasure through Samantha. This was the moment she loved the most when he first pushed inside her. It never failed to drag a gentle moan from her parted lips. This time it was even more intense than usual thanks to the blindfold that kept her other senses on edge.
Her fingers dug into his back, dragging her nails lightly along his spine with every forward motion of his hips. Her head fell back into the mattress and her back arched to push her body into is every time he crashed into her.
“Damn, do you have any idea how beautiful you are, Baby Girl?” His voice was deep and husky at her throat where his lips always found her pulse between the deep thrusts that filled her with every motion of their bodies together. The shock it sent through her body had her tightening her legs around him in an attempt to draw him in more deeply. She felt hungry and greedy. She wanted as much of him as she could get.
Her only answer to him was another soft whimper and the gentle scratch of her nails down his spine as they moved together again. It was more than she could take, and Samantha found herself falling apart the next time his hips moved to pin her to the bed. Her walls clenching around his cock as she cried out his name, not caring if anyone could hear them up here on this roof because the only thing in her world right now was Reid.
Her nails dug into his back drawing out a long deep moan that echoed in her ears that only ended when he half-whispered her name in a hoarse voice that was meant only for her ears. His hands grasping her hips to lift them off the bed and pull her body into his again. This time he set up a punishing pace instead of the slow motion that he’d used until now. She could feel him losing control with each passing motion until he cried out and pounded deep inside her one last time.
Sam reached up breathlessly to push the blindfold off her eyes. She needed to see his face. The grin she found there was priceless.
“Well, I hope you’re proud of yourself, Cowboy?” She returned his smile, tracing a finger down the center of his chest.
“Oh, I’m always proud of myself, especially tonight.” He laughed and stole another kiss, gathering her into his arms. “But as much as I hate to say it, why don’t we get back into those clothes. Last thing we need is you catching your death out here on the roof with no clothes on.”
Sam shook her head and glanced at the disarrayed pile of clothes on the rooftop around them.
“If I’m not mistaken, it’s all your fault that I wound up naked to start with, Handsome.”
He grinned over at her, sneaking in one last grope before he snagged the nearest of her clothes in a free hand.
“Be careful or you’re going to wind up naked again, Baby.”
“Oh, I’m counting on it.”
Chapter Ten
Samantha set off early the next morning again. The two of them had stayed up on the roof until she was yawning and drifting off to sleep in his arms. As much as Reid hated to move, he knew she needed to get inside to sleep and be ready for work the next day, and he intended to have her fall asleep in his arms again tonight. He was going to make sure that happened every night as long as he was here with her. Soon enough, the two of them would be falling asleep alone again. It wasn’t something he liked to think about.
Instead he focused on the way she felt, melting into his arms with a soft yawn when he finally got her into the bed. He stayed awake longer than necessary just to watch her while he still had the chance. Only a few days left, and he would be heading back to the ranch. The only thing he’d be
falling asleep to then was the sound of Matty sawing logs over on the other side of the cabin, and as much as he liked Matty, it didn’t compare to a beautiful woman drifting off in his arms.
The next morning, he got up with her and watched her get dressed from the bed. It was something he enjoyed doing, especially watching her put her makeup on for the day. He had no damned idea what she was doing with each of the wands and brushes, but he could have watched her do it for hours from the perfect vantage point that the bed offered.
She was done and headed out the door for work all too soon, though Reid had plans for that as well. She’d left him the name of her law firm on the pad of paper by the kitchen phone along with the phone number to her new office. After his shower, he stood in the kitchen trying to find the address for the place in his phone while he drank a glass of juice. It was going to have to do until he was able to get out and get some coffee but walking out on the street with nothing but a towel draped around his hips probably wasn’t the best idea.
After a half hour or so, he was pretty confident he’d found the right address and that he was going to be able to walk there given the better part of the morning. Surprising her with some lunch was just going to be a matter of grabbing some takeout and walking across the park to get to where she worked. He’d been to the park a time or two. It was only a few blocks from the apartment, and according to the map he’d pulled up, her office was down at the opposite end. The question was, what to bring.
He’d already looked up a few options, but he wasn’t entirely certain until he’d found the Thai place at the edge of the park. He should be able to grab that and walk to her office before it got too cold. He just happened to remember her telling him it was her favorite food during one of the many conversations the two of them had over the last few days.
