The Mermaid's Kiss

When they finally pulled back, both were breathing hard and she felt dizzy. The passion that seemed to flare up between them had her head spinning, and she loved it!

“You were unbelievable,” she mused, smiling so hard that her cheeks were beginning to ache.

  “It was nothing,” he laughed.

  “Are they…gone?”

He nodded before leaning down and taking her lips again. “Whatever possessed you to sneak out?” He whispered against her mouth, although his tone was not in the least bit accusatory.

Marissa felt her cheeks heat. “I wanted to get something special for the morning, and a change of clothes.” She realized that her purchases lay somewhere out there and were most likely nothing more than ashes. She sighed. “Speaking of clothes,” she went on, smiling coyly. “You aren’t wearing any.”

“Yes, and you are,” he countered with a devilish grin. “I do believe we should remedy that immediately. Even out the playing field, so to say.”

In the next instant, he had her dress pulled up over her head and had swept her up in his arms, striding confidently toward their makeshift bed.

“I promise you, once we get back to my clan, you’ll have a real bed,” he husked, laying her down and beginning to place tiny kisses along her skin, causing a delightful ripple of electricity to run across her body.

“Are you asking me to come live with you?” She rasped in wonder, trying her best to concentrate on what he was saying and not the exquisite sensation of his warm mouth on her skin as he continued to tease her.

He stopped what he was doing and looked up at her, capturing her gaze in the embers of their blazing fire. “I am. No more of this solitary life, mermaid. You’ll have a family. My clan is loud and rough, but they are also faithful, and will welcome you with open arms.”

Marissa watched him in silence, her heart pounding so hard that she feared it would explode.

“Marissa,” he went on softly. “I’m asking you to come home with me. To build a life with me. I know it seems impossible, but I am steadfastly falling in love with you, and can’t imagine going on another day without you by my side.” He placed a kiss against her lips, and she felt the world spinning and twirling around her. “Do you think you can handle living a life on land with a band of rowdy dragons and their leader who promises to cherish and love you for eternity?”

Marissa’s eyes welled with tears and she nodded her head, the gesture shaking them free to roll down her cheeks. “Yes, I can,” she croaked, and Chase let out a whoop that made her giggle with absolute happiness. She hugged him to her, burying her face in his neck and inhaling his scent greedily.

How she could have fallen so thoroughly, and so quickly for this man was a mystery, but she had.

And she knew beyond a shadow of a doubt that should would love him in return.

  Forever.

“Oh!” She squeaked, leaning back. “Your amulet! It must have been lost when you…took care of those scum. One of them must have had it.”

Chase laughed, before nuzzling her neck in the most distracting way, and she moaned.

“It doesn’t matter,” he whispered against her skin and she felt gooseflesh break out. “I have something much better.”

And with that, he proved to her just how much he meant it.
