At it’s heart, Diamond Run is crime fiction with a paranormal twist. Like all fiction it is flavored by personal experiences. Eighteen years of police work provided me with plenty of crime-related story material, and time served as an investigator in an organized crime task force gave me insight into some specialized criminal activities. This story focuses on one of those specialties, the criminal procurement of diamonds in large quantities. To be authentic, a story such as Diamond Run, should feature some profanity and violence. It does; the book features kidnappings, murder, extortions, and scenes of a sexual nature. Although I didn’t serve on a homicide squad, my investigations and those of my squad members, exposed me to a variety of murder cases, one of which involved a body found in a car trunk. All great fodder for a novelist.
Diamond Run also has a supernatural twist that has Phil teaming up with his girlfriend Sue’s psychic pal Gloria, and Gloria’s academic boyfriend Charles. They help pull several important leads together, as well as flush out some long- embedded entities from Sue’s home. Their involvement makes quite an impression on the formerly skeptic Phil. Gloria and Charles find a permanent place on Phil’s Rolodex. I’ve never employed a psychic in my investigations, but two powerful experiences – one in my personal life, and one during my police service, have inspired me as a writer to consider psychics as a useful resource in the investigator’s arsenal. So, Gloria and Charles may show up from time to time in future Phil Mahood novels. Stay tuned.
About the Author
Michael Croucher was on the Metropolitan Toronto Police Department for 18 years, and served on The Combined Forces Special Enforcement Unit investigating organized crime. During his police career, he learned that some organized criminals study police tactics almost as much as the police do, and that has made some good glue for his crime fiction. An award‐winning writer, he is building his list of crime and mystery novels, as well as several volumes of short stories. Michael’s short story Night Wagon was awarded first place for fiction by The Toronto Writers and Editors Network (2012).
He and his wife live in a small Ontario town. They have two married daughters, and five grandchildren. When he’s not writing, Michael reads fiction and follows hockey. He also enjoys, music, art, history, old photographs, and stargazing at night, occasionally with a nice single-malt scotch. He has travelled extensively over the years, and thoroughly enjoyed it. But now, unless he has to travel, he prefers being closer to home, sticking to a routine, and making up for years of lost writing time.
Diamond Run is his second novel.
