“I’d appreciate that,” Black said.
An hour later, Shields decided to go home. Black didn’t mind as he wanted to return to memory lane. But that was an exercise that didn’t last long. He’d answered some questions, but he’d raised more in the process. Many, many more.
Black called Blunt to thank him for all his help in rescuing Dr. Matthews from Estonia.
“I think we take your depth of knowledge for granted,” Black said.
“It’s called being old and connected,” Blunt said. “It’s nothing special.”
“I beg to differ,” Black said.
“Is that all you wanted to tell me?” Blunt asked. “I’m guessing there’s another reason you called.”
“It’s about my dad. I found a number hidden on a piece of paper tucked away in one of his medals tonight. I don’t know if it means anything or not, but it had the guy’s name along with the name Blue Moon Rising on the back.”
“That must’ve been what your father stumbled onto,” Blunt said.
“Are you sure everything’s above board with what you’re doing?”
“Positive,” Blunt said. “We’ll get this figured out.”
“No,” Black said. “Let me figure it out. If I find out something you should know about, I’ll tell you. I don’t want you to put yourself in danger with the organization in case there’s something to it.”
“All right,” Blunt said. “I’ll give you that courtesy. But the second you think something questionable is going on, you better let me know.”
“Will do,” Black said. “And thanks again.”
“Of course,” Blunt said. “But make sure you get rested up. We’ve got a new assignment that just came in this evening.”
“I’ll be ready,” Black said before he hung up the phone.
And he would be.
