Dale rubbed his face trying to get rid of the scene that kept replaying through his head. When he looked at the garage door to Tammy’s house, he wanted to know why his concern for her was continuing to haunt him. He needed to go home and see how Mercedes and the boys had fared on their own that night. His boys were his everything and the whole reason why he had to return. They were why he patrolled the neighborhood and risked his life, so they would be safe.
With Tammy’s family safely out of town, he didn’t feel as compelled to continue his role as neighborhood watch militia man. With the military patrols, perhaps he could spend more time with his boys. Maybe the manhunt for him had died down. If it hadn’t, he could take the boys to Tammy’s house and hide out there. The place was safer and no one would know where to find him.
He pushed the motorcycle through the gate into the backyard and opened the backdoor to her garage with the key and magnet Tammy had given him to release the locks. Yeah, he knew it was his fault she was attacked in her house the other night. He pushed the motorcycle inside and immediately nailed a two by four above the top of her garage bay door so it couldn’t be opened.
He locked the backdoor to the garage before he went in the house to see if she left him water or anything resembling food. He heard something rumbling down the street. He couldn’t see what it was through the shutters on the windows so he went to the peephole on the door. There was something covering it up. Once the rumbling noise died down he opened the door to see what it was.
He grabbed the paper stuck to the door and quickly closed it before anyone saw him.
The note read:
Tammy,
I have a HAM radio message from Ben that was sent several days ago. Alaska has power and he made it to Dutch Harbor. He’s trying his hardest to get home to you. All planes are grounded and I wasn’t able to find out how he’s planning to get home. I’ll let you know as soon as I hear anything else.
Dale read the note again before he crumpled it up and tossed it across the room. His cheeks burned in fury. Why didn’t that note show up sooner? But would she feel any better knowing he was likely risking his life to get home to them? There was no way to find out how she’d feel. And yet there was. However, his boys needed him more. He crossed the room, picked up the wad of paper and smoothed it out before he stuck it in his shirt pocket.

Thank you for reading. Also, I apologize for those of you that have been waiting far too long for this book to come out. Enduring the Crisis did so well, it froze me up for a bit. Life got beyond busy, I had health issues that I now know what they are, so it has taken me some time to not only get this done but also to gain some of my confidence back. Just so you know- I have Dale’s Tale finished and Enduring to the End is halfway there. I didn’t want to freeze up again. I want to finish this series for all of you.

Dedication
I owe a lot Boyd Craven for the success that happened when I published Enduring the Crisis. I had no idea it would do as well as it did. Boyd guided me a lot as I was fleshing out the story. Also author L.L. Akers encouraged me a bunch when I was anxious and second-guessing myself. You all should go read their books if you haven’t all ready.
The concept of this book was put together a little differently than my others. It was like: What if an E.M.P happened to me? What would I do? I’m not nearly as prepared as Tammy so I’d be up a creek if it really happened. Then I thought about: What if my family was in this situation and my husband was still working up in Alaska? It all snowballed from there creating this story.
My husband is a huge inspiration for Ben. He’s worked in a couple of small villages in Alaska building roads. Not the one in this story but in other small villages. We’ve actually “adopted” a few of the villages up there and have sent clothes, coats, and other kid things up there to help the children that don’t have access to the things we have here. He’s been a huge support for me as I have pursued writing so this story is dedicated to him and his dedication for not only providing for my family, but making sure others that have less than we do are taken care of.
My daughters are also my joy and my aggravation some days. They are great inspiration for the family dynamic with the Powell sisters. This book is also dedicated to them. They are also supportive when I have to shut myself away for hours to make sure my books are as good as they can be.
Ben’s story takes place from Homer to the middle of Canada. I lived in Homer when I was a teen and we drove up and down the Alcan when we moved to and from Alaska. We even lost our cat in the most desolate section of Yukon. So I used a lot of inspiration from that drive for Ben’s journey. We live in Boise and go up to the mountains a lot. I’ll have to do a video of the drive and post it on my website here soon.
Again, I also appreciate my readers. I’m such an extreme introvert with super high social anxiety so I get quite shy when it comes to interacting with readers but I’m super loyal so I don’t want to disappoint anyone even if it takes me a few years to follow through.(It shouldn’t take that long again)
About the Author
I moved a ridiculous number of times before the age of 18. I counted once. 36 places to exact. I have a treasure trove of memories from living around the country to draw from, even moving to and from Alaska by car. One thing that I did consistently was read. I read all the time.
I live in the heart of Boise, Idaho. When I’m writing, my Chiweenies Dobby and Yoda, attempt to keep me company but they are actually more of a distraction as they bark back at any dog they hear and bark at anything that goes bump inside or outside the house. The cats, Sherlock and Watson, fortunately let me be. Unless I’m using a back massager and that’s when Sherlock wan
ts in on some of that action too.
I have successfully parented five daughters to adulthood and have dealt with my fair share of far too much estrogen, shoes, and ponytail holders all over my house for many, many years. Now I’m also a grandparent to three adorable grandkiddos. I’m usually amazed when any writing gets done with all these distractions.
