Temporarily out of Luck

I snorted. Jenny had “after-party” plans. I returned to Allan. “Now, where were we?”

“E means,” he sang slightly off-key, “everyone can see.” He buzzed my lips. “I have a confession.”

  “Tell me.”

“When you hung out with Sarah Ann, I would watch you.”

I chuckled. The middle school years. “Seriously—”

The corners of his eyes lifted.

  “—not a confession.”

  “But I didn't tell anyone.”

“Lordy.” I heaved a sigh. “Sarah Ann told me. Best friends share all secrets.”

“Sisters.” Allan shook his head. “You have a glow and a happy spirit I wanted to capture and carry with me.

“After I graduated from high school and went to college, I didn’t forget you. I stole your picture from Sarah Ann's room and kept it on my desk. My roommates said I lusted after jailbait, but I ignored them.” His mouth crooked a small smile. “I could touch the picture and feel you.”

No one who knew his feelings had said anything. Not his sister and my best friend. Not my mother. Not my sister. No one.

“Mom told me about your college boy, and I wasn’t happy. I dated other girls, and gradually, I changed. Then on the day I pulled you over for the citation, an old familiar feeling hit me. One last chance. One last chance to go for it. Go for you.”

I tugged his lapels. “I’m not sure you want the same things as me.”

“I want to marry and have kids.” He inclined his head. “Don't you?”

My body hummed. I fashioned a bare nod. “I do, too.”

“Hattie, love me. I don’t ever want to let you go.”

I lifted my gaze to meet his. A golden circle flared around his irises. Quietly, I affirmed, “I do.”

Our foreheads touched. Allan and I slid to his right. Then back, and then, the song ended.

  “Nice dress.”

“Thanks. I helped Tracey pick the style.” I wore a pink silk sheath with a V-neck, which I found on Tucker's online store after Wedding Wonderland burned. “You really like it?”

“I like what’s underneath better.” He slipped his right index finger into the V and stretched the bodice. He looked down the front. A grin teased the corners of his mouth.

Underneath my party duds, I wore my lacey panty and bra set—just in case.

  “I like pink.”

  He-he-he. I knew that.
