Phoenix (The Colton Cousins Book 1)

“I dunno, Clover. Nix was very clear that he wanted one of us to be with you until Braxton leaves town.”
“Rosie, it’s a ten-minute drive. I think I’ll survive.”
“I don’t really wanna go against Nix’s wishes. He knows best when it comes to these things.”
“It’s fine, Rosie. I’ll call you when I’m in the car and stay on the phone with you the whole time. It’ll be like you’re right there in the car with me.”
Rosie is quiet for a long moment, thinking over my proposal. She obviously doesn’t want to go against Nix, but also knows it’s preposterous to have someone with me twenty-four-seven. Not to mention it makes me feel like an invalid having to be escorted everywhere by someone else.
“Okay. But only if you call me from the car and stay on the phone with me the whole time. Okay?” Relenting, she gives in to my pleading.
“Sure, no problem, you got it.”
I probably sound way too eager, but I don’t care. At least now, I don’t feel horrible for making her come out to get me.
Grabbing the Camaro keys, thirty minutes later, I open the garage and head to the matte black muscle car. How appropriate, a muscle car for a muscle man. I hadn’t seen Nix drive the Camaro yet, but it is his car. So that meant he had to drive it at some point. He seemed to favor his vintage truck the most. What I really want to see him on is his motorcycle. Ride behind him with my inner thighs pressed tightly against his legs, arms bound tightly at his waist—the heavy rumble of the engine beneath us.
Approaching the Camaro—daydreaming of riding on Nix’s bike—I don’t notice the figure at the garage door. The low setting sunshine momentarily blinds me as the roll-up door finishes its accent. Using my hand, I block the blinding light, hoping to clear my vision enough to see who is standing on the driveway just beyond. As my vision clears, I can see shiny black dress shoes and crisply pressed slacks.
“Braxton! How did you find me? I mean, how did you find out where I lived?” The presence of the man himself that I’m supposed to be avoiding at all costs makes me stumble backward briefly.
“As soon as Nix let it slip you were his roommate, I knew exactly where to find you. Had eyes on you ever since. I have been waiting for you to be alone so we could talk without a damn Colton breathing down my neck. Why is it they seem to always be around you lately?”
Braxton slowly advances on me, stepping further into the garage. Slithering like the viper he is. Snaking his way in where not wanted. His hands are behind his back, and I can’t make out what he’s holding. Is it a gun? I sure as hell fucking hope not.
“Oh, no reason. Just a friendly family is all.” I lie through my teeth. Taking a step back with every step he takes forwards. I wonder if I can make it back inside the house before he can catch up to me.
“I doubt that.” He grumbles under a scowling smirk. There’s something in his eyes that wasn’t there before. A hunger and demanding presence he hid from me. Because I certainly would not have flirted so openly with a man who looks like that at me. Seduction and mirth seeping from his pores as he slowly presses closer. This bastard really can’t take a hint, can he? I’m going to have to make it very clear to him.
“Look, Braxton, you’re really nice and all, but I’m not interested in a relationship with you. I’m kinda dating Nix now.” Well, that’s not entirely true, but I’m not going to tell him that. Who I play hide the salami with is none of his business.
“Is that so? Well, it’s a good thing I don’t give two shits about Nix and what he thinks belongs to him.”
What the hell is he talking about?
Two men that I had not seen before appear from behind Braxton and round the Camaro. Effectively trapping me between them and him. Between my two choices, I think I have a better chance of getting by Braxton than his two goons. As soon as the muscle heads are a few feet away from me, I bolt straight towards Braxton. Hoping my sudden movement surprises him enough to throw him off balance, allowing me to escape past him. Planning to run back inside the house, locking myself in while calling Nix.
But my oh so brilliant plan fails me instantly. Braxton is not thrown off by my sudden burst on nonexistent triathlon skills. He simply side-steps, swoops me up by my waist and pulls my back flush to his chest. He’s annoyingly strong for how soft he looks.
I kick and scream and try to elbow him in the nuts, but I’m small, and he’s not, and there’s no way I can win.
“God damn you! You fucking ass wipe cock sucking dick licker cunt fuck!” I scream every obscenity at him that pops into my head at that moment.
“My oh my, what a dirty little mouth you have. I’m going to enjoy that very much.” He chuckles, and I can feel his chest rumble with his amusement. The promise of my future torture tangible in his voice.
The only thing I can think of as he wraps his large hand and nasty smelling cloth over my mouth is; this is it. This is how I’m gonna die. I should have listened to Nix. I shouldn’t have assumed I was safe alone. I wish I had gotten the chance to tell him how I really feel about him. My vision blurs, and the world tilts sideways. Then, nothing. Black quiet dreamless sleep.
