Wyzak
Page 23
Wyzak occupied the chair next to her and tried to draw her into his lap. “What strategies?”
“Nothing for you to worry about,” Gemma said. She patted his arm and turned off the viewer that showed the bounty data. The food arrived at the table and gave her something else to focus on so she wouldn’t laugh at his expression. “Just idle conversation.”
Faros’s eyes narrowed as he studied Violet. “I don’t trust you, female. What are you plotting?”
Gemma leaned her head against Wyzak’s shoulder to watch as Violet drew her shoulders back and unleashed hell on the pirate captain, who grinned and enjoyed every minute of it. Gemma smiled and didn’t resist as Wyzak finally grumbled and dragged her into his lap, holding her close despite the others in the room.
The food arrived and everyone served themselves. Arguments and laughter rose up around the table, and Gemma struggled to swallow a sudden knot in her throat. It definitely felt more like home than any other ship she’d been on, with the people more like family than she’d even hoped.
Except for Faros. He was the dickhead who lived down the road but everyone had to put up with.
Wyzak stroked her cheek. “What are you smiling about?”
“Nothing in particular.” She turned her head enough to nibble on his fingers, waiting for the heat to spark in his silver eyes. “Just glad I bought you that drink.”
“And drugged and kidnapped me,” he added. His gaze smoldered. “Don’t think I forgot about that part.”
“I hope you never will.” Gemma helped herself to some of the spicy meat she’d ordered for him, licking the sauce from her fingers. “Should keep your ego in check.”
“You have no idea.” Wyzak’s arm tightened around her waist. “I still have a score to settle with you over that.”
Gemma laughed and turned her attention back to the food. “You can certainly try.”
Wyzak snorted and stood, throwing her over his shoulder. The rest of the room silenced; Violet’s eyebrows arched. Faros leaned back in his chair, only mildly interested. “Something we should be concerned about?”
“No,” Wyzak said, and picked up a plate with his free hand. “I will feed my mate elsewhere.”
Gemma sighed and shook her head as she caught Violet’s eye; the lawyer smirked, then went back to arguing with Faros when the rest of the room just shrugged and moved on once Wyzak opened the door.
Gemma resisted the urge to slap Wyzak’s ass, since she didn’t want to get dropped on her head, and figured they’d have to order more food to the room, since everything would be cold by the time they got around to eating. She smiled and slid her hand down his lower back, listening to his growl and the way his scales rattled.
So all in all, not the worst bounty she’d ever chased. She didn’t get the cash but got a mate, a family, and a home. Not bad at all.
