Polarian-Denebian War 2: Operation Aphrodite

by Jimmy Guieu

Not a bad estimate. The Apollo space programme cost was given as $25.4 billion at the time of Apollo 11.

True quote. (Author’s Note) A google search has failed to produce any information under that name or close variants.

True quote from a speech delivered on Radio Moscow in January 1954. (Author’s Note)

Drawn up by Percy Wilkins, Director of the Lunar Section of the British Astronomical Assiociation, a 300-diameter map of the Moon divided into quadrants. It took him 14 years to produce. (Author’s Note) Hugh Percy Wilkins (1896-1960) was a Welsh-born engineer and amateur astronomer. By profession, he was a mechanical engineer and civil servant, but his reputation rests on his achievements as an amateur astronomer, particularly as a selenographer. He was elected to the British Astronomical Association in 1918 and was Director of its Lunar Section from 1946 to 1956. In 1951 he published a 300"-diameter map of the Moon, considered by some as the culmination of the art of selenography prior to the space age. However his maps were dense with detail, some of which was fictitious, making them less useful. The crater Wilkins on the Moon is named after him.

See the journal Inter Avia, No. 2982, June 9, 1954: “A Soviet Motor Rocket?”; excerpt: “...that weighs only 2,720 kg and would have the power equivalent to more than 2,000,000 hp and reach speeds up 5,000,000 mph.” See also the same source, No. 2997, June 30, 1954: “Airplanes with Atomic Propulsion”: “...according to General A. Ponomarev.” (Author’s Note)

Experimental factory and base of “special ships” located southwest of Moscow. The Ziolkowski Institute is also located in Kaluga. (Author’s Note)

See The Time Spiral. (Author’s Note)

True: an elite corps of the US Army is training today in the use of these mini helicopters with belts, weighing 100 lbs and able to reach 60 mph. (Author’s Note)

The line of shadow that covers part of the lunar disc. (Author’s Note)

Area of the Moon separating the hemisphere perpetually lit from the dark hemisphere. In addition to its rotation and revolution the Moon also wobbles, which changes the line between the two hemispheres. It varies slightly because of this movement called libration, which allows us to see 59/100 of the surface. (Author’s Note)

Trinitrotoluene, a powerful explosive used especially in torpedoes and aircraft bombs. (Author’s Note)

A particularly nasty Russian insult. (Author’s Note)

These tanks of reinforced metal are lined with a non-metallic protective coating because fluoride is an incredibly powerful corrosive. (Author’s Note)

Giant tractors with an airtight cabin and engine specially designed to be used in areas without an atmosphere. These machines are being studied today in the USA (and probably Russia) for a future manned flight to our satellite first and then later to our planetary neighbors. (Author’s Note)

See The Time Spiral. (Author’s Note)

See L’Homme de l’Espace [The Man from Outer Space], winner of the Grand Prize of Science Fiction in 1954. (Author’s Note) Once again, Fleuve Noir published the books out of sequence, and Operation Aphrodite which, in many respects, should have preceded The Man from Outer Space, was instead published after it. Again, some confusion may have arisen, forcing Guieu to duplicate expository materials about the Polarians and the Denebians in this section. The “Grand Prix du Roman de Science-Fiction” was something set up by the publisher in 1954 for marketing purposes and only given to one of their novels, so it did not carry much credibility. It was discontinued in 1957. The winners were Guieu’s L’Homme de l’Espace (1954), Jean-Gaston Vandel’s Bureau de l’Invisible (1955), Stéfan Wul’s Retour à 0 (1956) and Max-André Rayjean’s Les Parias de l’Atome (1957).

See The Time Spiral. (Author’s Note)

United States Space Force as opposed to the USAF, United States Air Force. (Author’s Note) Guieu is making this up. During the Cold War, space operations (such as the X-1, etc.) were under the command of NACA (National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics), formed in 1915, which eventually turned into NASA in 1958.
