Sun Kissed

Our first argument had been over who was going to do the washing up. We had both laughed afterwards. We found we didn’t need to argue often-that we got on like a house on fire for the most of the time. I hadn’t felt so comfortable in anyone’s company in any previous relationship. It felt like we were friends as well as lovers. Contentment had settled over me like a warm blanket.

Work had been easy to leave behind. After making the decision to leave selling houses behind, I had agreed to run the hotel with Seren. The first week’s spent together had been learning the ropes of her business. I turned my hand to every role with gusto and found, to my surprise, that you could work and enjoy it! I no longer felt stressed all day, every day. I didn’t think once about my old job, and I found that Seren and I made a pretty good team. The hotel was flourishing-and so were we.

‘You’re awfully quiet,’ Seren commented, as we made the final turns into the village.

‘Just thinking,’ I told her, smiling across at her.

‘Oh yeah? About what?’ she asked, happily.

  ‘You,’ I smiled.

She smiled over at me before turning back to concentrate on parking the car. ‘Before we head in, do you fancy a quick walk on the beach?’ Seren asked. ‘Look, the moon’s already out and it’s a beautiful night.’

‘I’d love to,’ I smiled, climbing out of the car.

We wandered down the steps to the beach, hand in hand and both smiling. I had never felt this way, and I never wanted it to end.

We reached the sand and Seren paused, looking out to sea. The beach was empty and we had the whole cove to ourselves.

‘Abby?’ Seren began, turning towards me.

  ‘Yes?’

‘I’ve been meaning to ask you something,’ she told me, her eyes looking uncharacteristically anxious as she scanned my face.

  ‘You have? What it is?’

She swallowed, visibly and then reached for her pocket. My heart stopped momentarily and then picked up a fast, erratic pace as I realised her intentions.

‘Abby; since meeting you, you’ve changed my life irrevocably. I love you-more than you’ll ever know. Will you marry me?’

I gasped with pure pleasure and threw myself into her arms. ‘Yes!’ I cried. ‘I love you too! Yes!’ I said, holding her close.

When she finally released me, she gently pushed the ring onto my finger. It glistened brightly, twinkling in the moonlight. I gazed at it with adoration and lifted my sun kissed face to hers. ‘I love you, Seren.’

  ‘And I love you, Abby.’

She kissed me softly, her lips lingering softly on mine as the moonlight shone down upon us.
