“That doesn’t surprise me.” Marlee stood beside the bed and put her good arm around Abigail. “I’m so happy to be going home with you today.”
“Are you ready for this?” Abigail kissed her. “The media has been eager to meet you, to see the Canadian police officer who saved my life.”
“Yes, I think so.” Marlee took a deep breath. “What are you going to tell them about me?”
“The truth.”
When they got to the front doors, a line of reporters, cameras, and onlookers were waiting for them. Abigail squeezed her hand then led them on through, smiling and focused on Marlee as they stepped outside.
“Before answering any of your questions, I would like to introduce Marlee Nevins, the woman responsible for saving my life.” Abigail kissed Marlee on the lips, lingering the act to demonstrate her point to the world. “She’s my forever hero. I love her with all my heart.”
At first there was silence as mouths hung open, then someone started to clap and the rest joined in, adding cheers and congratulations. Marlee was overwhelmed, excited beyond belief about her future, and so in love with Abigail. She stepped into the spotlight, smiled at the cameras, and caught the ultimate wave as it crested into her new life.
