“Yes. They have a choice.”
“Do you know of any beings who don’t?”
Her eyes lowered to the floor, and her expression grew sad. “No. At least not until...” She tapped the journal.
“So finding my mate could potentially kill me.”
“I think you’re fine as long as you don’t mate with them and as long as they don’t die or do something that breaks your connection with them. I’ve known some beings who have broken their mating bond. It isn’t pretty.”
I swallowed, my throat too dry to form the next words. “I don’t like the idea of having this vulnerability.”
She grabbed my hand and patted it. “I’m going to do more research. You might not even be a phoenix, or maybe I translated that part wrong. I’m going to look into it, okay? Maybe he was dying because of the one who was hunting him. I could have translated some parts incorrectly.”
I nodded.
She grabbed the journal and closed it, getting back up on her feet.
“I’m going to go see Cecil,” I said.
She nodded, already distracted and lost in her thoughts.
I slowly walked to Cecil’s room, so distracted that I managed to walk into a door frame. I didn’t run into anyone, thankfully. I couldn’t get the idea of being a phoenix out of my head. The new information settled inside of me and it felt right.
Shit.
I swore a few more times and then locked myself in with Cecil. Instead of sitting in the chair, I moved Cecil carefully and crawled in next to her, mindful of her wounds.
“Baby-cakes,” I whispered into her neck. “I think I’m a phoenix, and I don’t know what to do. I need you.”
I closed my eyes, feeling Cecil’s broken body next to me as my body grew numb to the new information.

From the Ashes is a series I started a few years ago and got sidelined for a time. I am so glad to have dusted this off and shared it with you to enjoy. Nyssa has always been one of my favorite characters to create, and I love the undertone of darkness to her personality as she struggles to understand humanity.
