Desperate (A Contemporary Romance)
Page 21
Holding her tight he looked deep into her eyes. "Then what the fuck is going on?" His voice was dangerously low.
Salene knew there was no way anybody was going to come out of this alive she didn't tell the truth. The impossibly iron-like hold he had her in told her she wasn't going anywhere.
"Derek was helping me."
Green eyes flared. "With fucking what?"
"Buying pregnancy test." She said simply, holding her breath for his reaction.
Nothing.
It was as if he was frozen in time.
The slight rustle of movement and the sound of the door closing soon after told her Derek slipped out. Now it was just the two of them.
Slowly the steel band grip around her disengaged. The look on his face was starting to alarm her, she couldn't read any other emotion other than shock. What was he thinking?!
Bending to one knee before her it was her turn to go perfectly still. Pulling out a ring box Gabriel never took his eyes off hers as he pulled the gold ring from the black box, chucking the box behind him Gabriel grabbed her left hand and slipped on the ring to her finger.
"I was going to ask you to marry me Salene," his voice sounded hoarse. "But I'm not going to give you the option, you will be my wife, you will be the mother of my children," burying his face into her stomach his words muffled into her dress. "And we're going to spend the rest of our lives together. "
Tears ran down her face as she hugged his head deeper into her stomach. "I was so scared you didn’t …you might not feel…”
Feeling his lips on her stomach his words rumbled against her body. “You are everything to me baby.” Looking up at her Gabriel stood up slowly, cupping her face with both hands. “I know we started off rough to say the least,” his bright green eyes searched hers as looked down at her. “But know that I will spend the rest of my life loving you with every single breath.”
Salene clung to each word like a life line as he continued.
“Tell me sweetheart, that you will be my wife.”
Not bothering to wipe the tears from her face, she pulled him down to her level to let her kiss say what words could not.
Epilogue
Spotting his two curly head targets Gabriel politely excused himself to the front of the concession stand line. Standing at eye level with the counter, both girls were dressed in their grass stained soccer uniforms.
“What are you two getting?” Gabriel smiled as both twin girls turned and smiled up at him.
“Pickles!” they exclaimed loudly and in unison, causing some of the people in line laugh.
Gabriel just laughed at their excitement on their current favorite food obsession. It was their mother’s fault, Salene one day had a craving for pickles, so naturally his little warrior princesses followed suit. Now pickles were all they ever wanted.
“That will be three dollars.” The familiar voice of the attendant brought his attention up to the counter.
Gabriel just blinked as he stared face-to-face with his ex, Amber. She looked nearly the same, if not a little tired looking.
“Ophelia has told me telepathically that she wants a pickle too.”
Looking down Gabriel arched one eyebrow at Olivia. “Did she now?”
Odette was carefully counting her dimes out on the counter but still gave a nod in agreement with her sister. Suppressing a grin, he couldn’t wait to tell Salene about the can of worms she opened when she told the two girls about telepathy.
“I see,” he leaned over Olivia and added two more dimes from his pocket to Odette’s pile. “Well, that is pretty amazing you could hear her considering…”
“Hey Gabe,” Turning Gabriel looked to see Kevin standing off to the side. “Salene would like a spicy pickle.”
“I told you,” Olivia exclaimed with no lack of humility as she reached for her and her sister’s pickle.
“Yeah ok I believe you,” Gabriel grabbed some more money from his pocket. “Go with your uncle to cheer for Monica.”
Both his and Tobias’s daughters were playing on the same day. Since Monica was a year younger she was on another team.
“Aww that is sweet,” the lady behind him in line laughed. “You have triplets.”
Laughing Gabriel smiled proudly as she caught sight of his girls following Kevin up the bleachers.
“No not exactly,” he corrected. “Those two are twins and the other is named but unborn sitting at seven months inside their mom.”
The lady smiled, “You are so lucky.”
Grabbing the third pickle from Amber who remained silent he grinned wider.
“I know.”
