“Was his name Morlix?”
Allan nodded.
“Is he with you?”
“No. I left a group to hold the position on the ridge. We’ll pick him up on the way out. Odd sort for a sell-sword.”
“That he is. I think you’d like him.”
Stopping at a wagon, Dech was able to get aboard by himself. Sitting beside Granum he said to Allan, “I take it you made out all right?”
Allan placed his hand on Dech’s shoulder once the warder settled into his place aboard the wagon. “A dented helm and scarred shield was all they could manage against me. My strong shield arm and empty head, ah, they should have known better,” he said with a twinkle in his eyes. “You and yours made out despite taking quite a bruising. Not bad considering who you fought. Or would it be what you fought.”
“You forget the Abbess Dealan,” Dech said sullenly.
“No, no I did not. Quite a tale and a bittersweet one at that, but she lives. I’ll explain as best I can on the way.”
“I was correct then,” Granum said. “I didn’t feel her passing, but with her body destroyed…. That would mean…” he trailed off in thought. “Transnatural migration? Hmm, such a thing is fraught with complications.”
“Not that I understood a word your mage there just uttered, but he just might have it right,” Allan said.
Dech shook his head in relief and bewilderment. “Such is beyond me as well.”
“Says the knight that defeated the Lord of the Vile… twice.”
“I was not alone.”
“Dissy told me what happened, old friend. You fought Laerdavile himself—”
“Itself,” Granum corrected.
“True enough,” Allan replied with a shrug. “You fought Laerdavile itself with sword and shield, face to face. No other knight in history can make that claim. Quite the deed. Quite the deed.”
“And you defeated Malig. Your scout told me how you led the way against a host of demons. How did Gerald and young Rob fare?”
Allan smiled. “Gerald was a wonder. Fought Underealm creatures as if he had no care in the world but vanquishing those fool enough to contest him. I of course humbly kept his flanks clean of attack.”
“Like always,” Dech said with a smile. “And Rob?”
“Rob? That would be Sir Robert to you and me,” Allan said with mirth and pride. “Thanks to my tutelage, the lad saved us all from a fate worse than death. Reminds me of me.”
Dech laughed, grimacing in pain at the effort. “That must be quite the tale.”
“Oh, it is. Quite the tale indeed! I’ll regale you with an account of mighty deeds and valor that will make our friend the bard jealous. First though, we should be ridding ourselves of Nevar.”
Looking to be sure everyone was ready to depart before gesturing to the scout at the head of the column, Allan shouted, “To Arataine.”
