She handed it to Lila; it had been addressed to FRESH START.
Lila turned it over and saw a heart drawn where the flap met the envelope—the same spot where kids sometimes left a mark to indicate “sealed with a kiss.” She pulled out a single sheet of paper, and read the letter aloud:
I never thought anyone cared about me other than my parents, and that whatever attention I received from others was because of my looks. I came to believe that I was only worth what I could earn off of them, and quickly found that they brought me more in a week than my parents earned with all their hard work in a season. I thought I’d found the easy way to a better life. But I was wrong, and I was trapped in a life I could not escape. I never thought I’d have a second chance. But now I have. Thanks to you. I shall not let you down. Or my parents.
Adina.
She’d signed off with a lot more hearts.
Lila set the letter down on her lap, tears welling up in her eyes. “You’re right, Toni. One out of three ain’t bad.”
