"And you are no lady," the man shot back his offense at the cutting remark evident in his red color. "The whole camp heard you moaning and crying like a bitch in heat. The way you fucked that man."
A good number of Io's men had ridden up at the raised voice, but Io held her ground. "My status as a lady is dependent on whom you ask. I certainly make no such claim. My status as a wife, whose husband is skilled in the bedchamber and who cannot help but be pleased by his efforts, that is a claim I will make. Proudly, without shame. Without condemnation from anyone. I am fortunate in my match to Xavier Brice. Not only is he a man with manners and honor, a lord and knight warrior with solid loyalties and fine judgment of character. He is a husband who has done more than spoken vows; he has kept them. He keeps me as he does his own body, as a temple. Sacred."
"Worshiped," Xavier called back without even looking.
Io made sure her expression showed her contempt of the man she stared down. "That none of you are capable of attending a woman as is her due tells me you are incapable of attending any duties. So you need not answer the question. I know, you are neither dog nor cowardly dog, you are little more than a rat. Slinking about and comfortable in the filth you live in. You should drop back, for I hear tell wolves sometimes kill rats just to toss them about. And you might notice I am well enough surrounded only with wolves."
He did just that, reining in and letting the men he'd pushed through ride past. Many knocked him as they went. Raised voices followed his rejoining of his own group. The inability of the man to either convince Io to join them or to set her down beneath them seemed shocking as best she could tell. At least to them. All around her, men laughed and some even howled.
"If I did not fully and truly before, I love you now, my lady," Gerald said, shaking his head.
"Some make it rather easy," Io told him.
"And some are goddesses who should not be challenged by mortals," Xavier said, positioning Cloud so he could drag Io before him on his own horse. He leaned in and whispered in her ear, "You are the most vulgar women alive."
She giggled.
"They did not believe Balbroke when he told then you were Brice's wife," Liam said as he rode closer.
"Well, they know it now," Mark said, leaning in to slap Xavier on the back.
"They know it now, indeed," Io said, falling back against her husband and sighing. "Perhaps I might get some rest when we stop."
"Rest?" Xavier scoffed, "You cannot rest, I have a reputation to build as a great lover."
"Ah," Io cooed and giggled. "I suppose it is but a small price to pay, exhaustion, that my husband is known well for all his… abilities. Even if it is he who falls to me each night."
The whole party roared with laughter, and Io closed her eyes and dozed. She'd little hope it'd all be that easy, but the extreme of the troubles coming far exceeded what she might have feared in her worst nightmares. If she could better trust in her husband, she might find all things easy.
