The Hastings Series

“I’m upset because of you, Jagger! Leave!” Her voice was shaky, and her bottom lip seemed to tremble. “Don’t make this worse,” she whispered.
I had to if I wanted even one small chance to make it all better again. If I kept pushing her to talk to me, I might as well give myself the move-on-card. The least I could do was to give her space. Some time to think.
Standing back up I sighed and reached out my hand to brush the tears off her cheek. Then, bending down, I kissed her forehead softly. “I love you, Gray. I’ll be waiting,” I whispered, then left her gallery, not knowing when I would see her again.
Epilogue
Jagger
I knew she received the note I left her before driving back to Hastings at the end of March. It’s been exactly one hundred seventy days since I’ve seen Gray, and I hoped with each day that passed that a call or text from her would come in. I didn’t know what she told her brother and cousin, but from their texts from some weeks ago, it looked like they thought Gray and I were in a long-distance relationship. I wasn’t sure what we were, but I knew that I still loved her. With all my heart.
I left Newton because of Harlow giving me the great news about Ann showing up in Hastings and causing a little bit of trouble. I knew Ann wasn’t there to mess around with Low, but I wasn’t happy with them being around each other, especially Hunter being present too.
Since I was back in Hastings, I spent my nights in Hunter’s old trailer, and by day, I helped them out at the diner. Their baby was growing, and Harlow started to feel weaker each day. That was one fair reason to leave Newton. But the real reason was to give Gray some space. What Ann told her was rough, and I wanted to give her the time to reflect on it while I wasn’t around. If I had stayed, there weren’t many places she could hide from me besides her gallery and her apartment. Before I left, I kept working for Dallas, and Gray never visited him or Sage at their apartments. I was blocking her way, and that wasn’t my intention.
So, leaving was the only good option. Ann somehow managed to stick around longer than I wanted her to. She showed up a few times a month, hoping to speak to me and Harlow at once, but I always sent her packing. Harlow didn’t need that stress right now, and I wanted the baby to be healthy once it’s born.
“You miss her, right?” Harlow’s voice was comforting, but I wasn’t sure I felt like talking about Gray. I was sitting at an empty booth after the diner closed, drinking a beer, and contemplating the past months. Harlow sat down next to me, squeezing in her belly. I looked down at it, then put my hand over her belly, caressing it softly.
“I can’t wait to meet him,” I said quietly, smiling at the feel of a small kick. Harlow smiled brightly. “He’s excited to meet you too. He only ever kicks when he hears your voice. It’s weird.” She laughed, and I couldn’t help a grin. “His father is probably already scaring the shit outta this little guy,” I joked, kissing my sister’s temple.
Harlow’s smile softened, and she grabbed my hand off her belly. “You ignored my question, Jag. I know you don’t like talking about it, but it helps. Gray’s unsure. What Ann did was horrible. It wasn’t for her to tell her. But I’m sure Gray isn’t mad at you. She seemed like an understanding person, and I bet once she’s heard your side of the story, she’ll be able to trust you again.”
Sighing, I looked at my sister’s hopeful face. Low was good at forgiving people who have done her wrong, and she quickly knew when someone had that trait too. I knew Gray wasn’t angry. She got pulled away from me by someone that had no right in doing so.
“She hasn’t texted or called. I sometimes wake up with the urge to drive back to her and make everything better, but I don’t want to push her if she’s not ready to see me again.”
Harlow’s brow arched, and I knew she didn’t approve of my words. “If anything, I think she’s just waiting for you to go back to her. Jagger…you love her. It’s not fair to her and it’s not fair to you to keep this distance,” Harlow said.
I thought about her words, wondering if that was all it took for me to get into my car and run after the girl I fell in love with so deeply just before disaster struck. Eyeing Harlow, I started to nod, then ran a hand through my hair. “You’re right,” I admitted.
“I’m always right.” And with Harlow’s wise words, I started to plan out my return to Newton, and how to get the girl back I couldn’t stop thinking about.
