Behind them, Niki discovered, were the remnants of a once great civilization. It almost made her feel like crying to see their condition and she knew they had had plenty of time to recover on the trip because the ship had been well stocked in case they needed to leave food.

There were women among them and a handful of children—all male that she could see.

On the other hand, they all had long hair so it was hard to say.

She smiled tentatively at the leader when Taurin had taken her to greet him. “Welcome,” she said in their language, startling Taurin. “We have named this world New Eos in honor of the world that gave us our men.”

The man studied her for a long moment and the hand she held out and then he took her hand in both of his. “We thank you for sending them to us in our hour of need.”

He looked at Taurin and smiled faintly. “She is as beautiful as you told me, son. I was certain you must be lying.”

Niki burst out laughing, but she was pleased with the compliment and pleased they’d taken the time to learn at least some English. It was going to make blending their colony a little easier.

Not that she had any doubts that there was going to be some adjustments that would have to be made.

She linked arms with Taurin as they headed back down the gangplank, so excited that he’d come to her as promised that she could hardly contain it. “Is he really your father? Or was that just figurative?”

He sent her an amused look. “Madrone children only know their true mother. Every man in the tribe is their father.”

That explained why they were so good with ‘little humans’ and children, she thought with amusement and love.

“Let’s go home and fuck,” she said happily. “I have so missed your soldier. And you, of course,” she added teasingly.

He grunted non-commitally, eyeing her belly. “I see that.”

  She sent him a look.

He laughed. “Do you think I do not know why Kagan was so happy to see me off? He said that he would father the next.”

  The End.
