I could have a child of my own, a little glimmer of happiness in all my misery.
“Where would I even begin?” I ask half-heartedly. “How would I find a donor? I wouldn’t want to walk into one of those centers because then there is a risk that Terrance would find out.”
“Oh, you don’t have to. You know Marcie? The redhead who lives on the Upper East Side who came to my barbeque and created a massive scene that time?” I nod even though I don’t have a strong recollection of that. “Well, she’s found this amazing guy. He’s really discrete and apparently good looking as well. Good genes.”
“Really?” Am I mad for even considering this? “Who is he?”
“I don’t know who he is but I do have his number.”
“You do?” I take the little black card with a number and an email address and my heart leaps up into my throat. “Why do you have his card? You aren’t thinking about having another one right away, are you?”
“No way! It’s in case one of my delightful little friend needs it.” She winks at me. “Like you.”
I don’t know if she’s joking or not but a plan begins to form in my mind. I might well send an email and make an appointment with this mystery person, just to see if it’s something I can go ahead with. I might change my mind as soon as I get there but if I don’t give it a go, I will never know. I might always regret it.
I slip the card away, mentally planning to set up an anonymous email address later, just to give it a try.
