Emma's Protector

Page 5

by Lily London

Emma gave a small laugh. She’d heard me complain about winter before. I grew up in a desert, so it wasn’t really a shock. Pulling up to the hospital, we made our way up to my sister’s room. The closer we got to it, the more I could feel my anxiety increasing. Emma placed her hand in mine, automatically able to read the difference in my body. I had no idea how she could do it, but she just knew when I needed something to ground me.

Mylie’s room was not that far from the elevator, but it felt like I had run ten miles by the time we reached her room. Emma let go of my hand as we walked in and instantly my breath was stolen from me. There, sitting on the bed, fully dressed and ready to go, was my little sister, awake. She looked exhausted, and I knew her body was weak, but to me she looked amazing, perfect.

“Clay,” Mylie said softly as she raised her arms slightly.

I instantly forgot everything I was just feeling, went over to her, and wrapped my arms around her as tears filled my eyes. She was really here. She was really awake and could come home with me. I never thought this day would come, and it was finally here. I finally had my sister back, and this time around she was going to be getting her older brother.

  “Missed you,” she said slowly.

“I missed you, too.” I pulled back and I wiped the tears that she had shed from her cheeks. “You ready to get out of here and go home?”

She gave me a big warm smile as she nodded. She was very ready to start the next part of her journey, and I couldn’t wait to see what the future had in store for her. I turned to look at Emma and I could see nothing but love in her eyes. I had my own journey to go on.

For the first time in a long time, I was looking forward to it.
