“Rik? What’s the matter?” I asked him, panic starting to seize through me. “Where’s Wesley?”

He was sobbing, his arms so tight around my neck he almost choked me.

“Where is he, Adrik?” I demanded, looking around some more.

My baby was nowhere to be seen.

“Bad men,” he sobbed incoherently. “We were playing. They took him. They made him go with them.”

  My heart stopped.

“What do you mean?” I asked him, pulling him off my neck to look at him.

“They took him! I tried to hold onto him but they pushed me and yelled at me.”

“Oh God...” I breathed, looking around me once again before screaming, “WESLEY!”

Adrik cried again and I held him tightly as I ran back to the house. Clarence and Mason were back, talking in the living room with bags of groceries still sitting on the couches getting warm.

“What happened?” Mason asked immediately, seeing his eldest crying in my arms.

I handed him off quickly and managed to stumble out, “He said Wesley was taken. That men came and took him.”

  Clarence blanched.

“And he’s not answering me,” I started, my eyes spilling tears as I tried to breath and not give in to a panic attack.

“We’ll go look for him,” Clarence said evenly, clamping his hand around my shoulder reassuringly. “I’m sure he’s fine, just playing hide and seek or something. Mason, come with me.”

Mason kissed his son on the head and set him down as Evelyn reappeared, my baby Ryder on one hip and her youngest, Zia on the other.

“I have to go look for him,” I told her after the men had already gone. “Can you watch the others?”

“Yeah, yeah sure,” she nodded quickly.

“And...lock the door until we get back.”

She looked at me curiously but nodded anyway, following me to the door.

I took off at a run, calling my son’s name as I went. Clarence and Mason were already split up, checking all sides of the neighborhood, every nook and cranny that we knew of. Wesley was nowhere to be found. Eventually we had to stop and call the police. Whether he’d gotten lost, been taken or even if he’d run into an alligator, we needed help and manpower to find him.

I stood there, hyperventilating as the police arrived, sirens blaring and lights flashing. My baby was somewhere, and that somewhere wasn’t with me. Deep, deep inside my heart I knew. I knew it was the past come back to haunt us. It was the cure, it was my blood. That was why they took my baby.

  I had to find him.

  We had to find him.

  About the Author

L.L. Ash is a Washington-born writer who has traveled and lived across the western coast of the US. She lives in Utah with her husband and 3 kids, all of which are a handful!

Ash has been writing fiction since she was 11 years old, and finished her first full-length romance novella at 12. While her writing has improved since then, her love for literature has not changed. Oftentimes you can find Ash reading an indie romance or enjoying a historical fiction. She has been an artist for decades but found her true love and passion in romances.

But Ash is not content to write a romance with untried characters or predictable ‘happily ever afters’. Ash strives to create honest stories revolving around struggling heroins and bruised heroes, both trying to find happiness and acceptance, just like we in real life do. She writes about real struggles and real hardships, often giving the characters a tarnished facade. But through the constant loving and hating of the characters, you will fall in love with them as they grow and change and evolve through the stories.

As Ash always says, it’s all about real romance for real life.
