I knew we were right for each other the moment her feisty green eyes captured mine. Now it's forever.
CHAPTER TWELVE
Lauralynn suggested we have an afternoon weekend picnic with my Dad. My eyebrows shoot up as I drive down the street and see several familiar cars parked in front of the house. What's my beautiful blushing boss up to?
She's practically skipping down the sidewalk, joy surrounding each step. Her merry eyes are grinning as she jumps into my arms right before I open the front door.
"I love you, Cyrus," she declares, planting a hot wet kiss across my surprised mouth.
The door swings wide open as Snake exclaims out loud. "Are you cheating on me?"
Laughter breaks through the family room as my squad members shake my hand. Dad's eating up the humor, the sound of jubilance ringing in the air.
"It's great to see you guys, but what gives?" Lauralynn takes my hand and leads me into the backyard.
Lumber, hardware, and every imaginable accessory are neatly stacked next to a new shed structure. She went to all of this thoughtful effort for me. I embrace her tightly, this generous gift one more reason I love her.
"We're building the shed you talked about, the workshop for your Dad. I came across a pile of excess building supplies. Since this is a big job, I invited your boyfriends to help."
She's instantly earned the respect and admiration of every man in the yard with that comment.
"Aw, don't feel bad, Snake. I'm still available." Matthis tries to give him a bear hug, which he promptly rejects. Once in a great while, we have the last laugh.
"Thanks, guys; you're the best brother's I have."
"We're your only brothers," Everett smiles, exuberance clear on his face. I have a sneaking suspicion a particular nurse will be landing her engagement ring sooner rather than later.
Ian walks out of the kitchen with an armful of beers. "To a new shed," we toast.
"How's Drake?" I ask Everett, happy to hear he's considering a move to North Carolina.
"Sweating away in the hot Virginia sun. He's bringing his fiancé to see all of us in a few weeks. To Drake and Rebecca!"
I should probably meet Lauralynn's mom before considering a marriage proposal. The months ahead will be difficult and challenging for her family as the legal proceedings begin.
My expanded overjoyed heart swells as Lauralynn escorts my Dad back into the house. We're building a long-term loving relationship one board at a time.
I may have to show her the finer points of construction management this week. In her trailer. In the model home. Anywhere and anytime she'll have me, I'm hers.
THREE MONTHS LATER
"I love being part of your extended family. I feel like I have six boyfriends," she smiles. Lauralynn pulses the pads of her delicate fingers along my lips and inside my heart.
"I'm incredibly proud of you," I reply, kissing each delicious finger.
"Your leadership has brought a renewed sense of commitment from the crew."
Gates Development continues to thrive, as her family struggles with legal matters. Regardless of the outcome, she's made peace with her father. The first meeting with her mother was intense, but they're managing through these troubling times.
A toast to the happy couple!" Cyrus says, another tray of beers passing around.
"Here's to the groom, a man who kept his head even while he lost his heart."
"Cheers!" we exclaim, Ian's tears of joy mirroring our sentiments.
"Do you dream about a big, fancy wedding," I ask Lauralynn, edging closer to our moment in the sun.
"I only dream of you," she replies, earning an exemplary behavior bonus later this evening.
"Me too."
Everything within the squad is a competition. I don't want to be last.
