  Chapter Four

*Pearce has a major interest in reproduction. He was recalled in 2011 but in 2014, as state Republican Party vice chair, proposed requiring that women on Medicaid take birth control.

*It was a movement that would launch other movements, as Opal Tometi, who worked with Puente and other migrant justice groups, would go on to cofound Black Lives Matter.

*In January 2019, Romney, shortly before he was sworn in as senator from Utah, would pledge to “speak out” against Trump’s “anti-immigrant” politics. Every new nativist radicalization appears as though out of the blue.

*Their name has since changed to the more antiseptic CoreCivic, which pledges to “better the public good.”

*Ultimately, the defendant was acquitted of murder but convicted on a gun charge, which at the time of this writing had been overturned on appeal.
