“Are you ok? I have never known a clumsy wolf.”

  “I feel funny.”

“I think I know the feeling. Can you walk?” I turn away from him and start for the door. Outside in the fresh air, I feel a little better.

He starts walking to the truck then calls for me. “Cara, are you coming?”

I look at him. I have to admit I thought about running. I wanted to be close to him and then again, I was scared to be alone with him. I was so confused at what I felt. After a few minutes, I walked to the truck.

“I thought for a minute you were going to run away from me. I would hate that.” He started the truck then started driving. Instead of getting back on the highway, he went through the little town. Then we drove out of town into the middle of nowhere.

  Chapter 9

He drove for such a long time I wasn’t sure where we were. I didn’t think he was ever going to stop again. I’m not sure at this point where I am. If I wanted to go home to my pack I’m not sure I could find my way from here.

The last road he took dead ended. I am now staring at nothing but woods. I don’t see anything but trees. There are no houses that I can see. No other cars. I get the feeling he is about to dump my body in the woods so no one can find me. I guess now is a good time to start panicking.

I can hear her heart beating faster than before. She is scared now that I have stopped driving. I will give her a minute to calm down, then take her on to the house. “Well, here we are.” I sit and look at her for a minute. She is beautiful.

  “And where is here?”

“I have a house just through the woods. Come on I will show you the way.” Once he got out he pulled a tarp out of the back of the truck then covered the truck. It was camouflage. I guess no one would find it unless the drive right up to it. The trees he parked under hid it from the air some.

He took my hand and started walking into the woods. I wanted to shift and run. I must have stopped at one point. He jerked my arm. “Come on, we need to get to the house.”

“Sorry.” He smiled at me then raised his hand to my face and gently rubbed his finger across my cheek. It felt hot where he touched me.

We walked only a short way till we came to a house. There were trees taller than the house that covered the roof pretty well. Long branches reaching over the whole house. It was a one-story white house that needed painting badly.

“This is where we will stay tonight. I don’t know after that. You may use the shower first if you like. I am going to make a couple of phone calls. There is only one bedroom and only one bathroom. Help yourself.”

The living room was small. There were two doors, one to the right of the door we came in and one on the wall across from the door. I wasn’t sure which one I should open. He opened both doors, then stood back.

“There is no kitchen if that is what you’re wondering. I like to hunt when I stay here. If you want, we can go for a run.”

“I think I would like that. I like to run when I am nervous or upset. It helps me calm down.”

“All right, give me a minute to make my calls, then we shall go for a run.”

I stand close to the door. He sits down on the little couch. He hits one button and waits. I don’t know what to do. I feel like I am eavesdropping if I stay there.

  “Sir?”

“I was checking in. How are things going?”

“Business is good. We have two that hasn’t paid up. Everyone else has made their drop offs.”

“Excellent. I won’t be in for a few more days something came up. I have my phone if you need me.”

“Yes, sir.” He hung up, then placed another call. Then another. I don’t know how many calls he made. They all seem to be the same. Short answers, nothing to descriptive. Nothing to indicate what they were talking about. “Alright, we can go now. Do you want to leave your clothes inside?”

I hadn’t thought about this, I didn’t want to undress in front of him. I also didn’t want to leave my clothes in case I decided to run from him. I wasn’t sure what to do.

“I will step out if it makes you uncomfortable. You can shift, then come out.” He seemed to read my thoughts pretty well. At least to a point. I let him go on outside. He left the front door open so I could come out once I shifted.

When I walked outside I was surprised. I don’t know what I was expecting, but it wasn’t a solid black wolf. He was magnificent. Big dark black long fur and amazing. I hadn’t seen him in his wolf form before now. I stared at him. He had already seen my wolf I figured. He had been watching me for some time now.

He walked over to me and stood to face me. It wasn’t like he was trying to get me to submit to him, but more he was taking me in. He put his nose into the fur on my neck and sniffed. Then he ran his nose down my back and down my back legs. He sniffed every inch of me as if to familiarize himself with me. Then he stood still for me to sniff him. I sniffed his neck, then his sides, but that was it. I wasn’t ready to be as personal as he had been.

When he thought I was done he started walking into the woods. I followed him for a while. Then we came across a large open field. I looked around before stepping out of the trees. Once I was sure no one or other wolves were around I took off running. He gave chase. He knew I wasn’t trying to run away just stretching my legs. I could have run much faster than I was if I wanted to get away.

He ran beside me for a time. He watched as I caught the scent of a deer. I lifted my head and sniffed the air to catch the direction the scent was coming from. Once I had the direction I took off full out running. He had a little trouble keeping up.

Once I was getting close to the deer I stopped. I watched the deer from a distance, then lowered my body to the ground. I slithered forward till I was almost close enough to touch the deer. Right before I was going to sprang he leaped over me and was going after the deer I had tracked. It pissed me off.

I was a little faster than him and outran him. I was running beside the doe when I realized it was a doe. I stopped chasing it. He looked confused. In our territory, we never killed a doe. She would provide food for us a long time. She would give birth over and over in her lifetime.

Being I wasn’t from his pack or mated to him I couldn’t hear his thoughts if I wanted to. After letting the deer go, I walked for a little bit. I could hear water running so I went toward the sound of the running water till I found the source.

When I found the source, I was standing in front of a waterfall at the bottom of a mountain. I looked up at the water running over the rocks and splashing down into the pool in front of me. It was pretty. Postcard pretty. I hadn’t paid much attention to the trail I had been following descending downward.

She is like a new pup discovering new life. She soaks in everything. Why she let the deer go I don’t know, but she is curious. She heard water and headed straight for it. She stands there holding her head up as if she is proud. She is so beautiful. I can’t wait for tonight when we are back at the house. Wait till I am alone with her and only one bed.

I wonder what he is thinking about. He keeps watching me like I am going to melt into his every wish. I have got news for him I am not that easy. I walk to the edge of the water and drink. The water is cold running off the rocks. It must come from some kind of spring in the mountain. Once I have drunk my fill I lay down on a rock above the water. I lay with my head on the edge of the rock looking into the water.

She would be so easy to take right here right now. If I didn’t care how she felt, I could force her to mate with me right now. As long as I didn’t bite her I wouldn’t care tomorrow what she did.

There are tons of little fish swimming around my shadow. I reach my paw into the water. The little fish swim up and nip at my paw. I splash trying to grab one. I have hooked fish with my claws before.

She thinks she can catch fish. He laughs. What a kidder. No matter what she doesn’t get discouraged, she keeps on going. Even when she let the deer go it didn’t slow her down. She just changed course. Mos
t wolves wouldn’t have been able to let a deer go. Hungry or not the minute something runs from us, we give chase till we kill it. But she seems to have some odd control over her emotions, even as a wolf.

I feel him coming closer to me. I am still pawing at the fish. I have one now stuck in my claws. I stand up and pull it onto the rock I am standing on. He stops a few feet from me. The look on his face says he didn’t think I could catch a fish.

She caught one. She actually caught a fish with her claws. I have never seen that done before. She is something else. So, special. No wonder her pack fought so for the right to be her mate. She would be well worth the catch. Now she is mine. I will not let her go back to her pack. No, she doesn’t know it yet, but I claim her for myself. I will give her time to get used to me. Then I will have her for my mate. I am not a patient wolf I won’t be able to hold off long before I mate with her.

I lay the fish down and start tearing it apart. I like fish once in a while. Mostly because no one else can catch them. At least that was how I started getting into the fish taste. I was teasing my brothers, Zeke, and Cane one day. They dared me to catch a fish and I did. They couldn’t believe I did it.

Is she eating the fish? I have never seen a wolf who liked fish. Then again, I have never seen one catch a fish. It is hard to like something you can’t catch.

I eat only part of the fish, then I offer him the rest. He looks at it, then at me. He sniffs it, then licks it. I take it he hasn’t ever eaten raw fish. He takes a couple of bites and turns away.

The Fish isn’t half bad. I will have to learn how she caught it. You never know when fish will be the only game around. To many hunters these days killing our food just for the horns. They shoot an animal and remove the horns and leave the meat to spoil.

I don’t know if I should keep running or go back to the little house. I decide I want to explore some more. I take off, he follows. He doesn’t seem to care where I go. I run back up the hill to the top of the waterfall. I look out around me to see if I can see anything. Nothing but trees. I start back toward the field. I want to lay in the sun. It is mid afternoon and the sun feels good.

When we get close to the field, he growls stopping me in my tracks. He steps in front of me and stands still. I sniff the air. At first, the wind is blowing where I can’t smell anything. Then a shift in the wind and I smell it. Humans.

He backs up pushing me back into the trees further. I watch him, then look past him. I see the orange vest of the hunters. They are tracking the deer I let go earlier. Max turns around and shoves me back into the brush. He is trying to get me to hide. I understand and do what he wants.

The hunters find the path we are on. They walk close to us. One of them bends down and touches the ground. He says something to the other man about wolf tracks. Thank goodness, they don’t seem to know how fresh the wolf prints are. Our tracks could have easily given us away if they had been trackers. We wait and watch as they walk past us.

Max starts to stand up, I bit his hip and pull him back down. I know hunters. They may act like they didn’t see us then double back. Max growls at my biting him. I am afraid he has given our location away. We hear a shot, then the air whiz by just over our heads. I duck down even lower to the ground. Max does as I did.

It isn’t too long till the doe is running past us through the brush. She has a fawn trying to keep up with her. The hunters aren’t very good shots thank goodness. I don’t budge till both hunters have run past us again in pursuit of the doe. The doe has just enough time to hide her fawn before running off leading the hunters away. I see the little fawn’s ears moving above the leaves. He is hidden pretty well. She told him to drop to the ground just as they jumped a log. He folded instantly. He is lying with his back under the log and the leaves cover the rest of his body. Unless you know where he is you wouldn’t see him at all.

I stand up and sniff the air again before I start walking. I don’t bother the little fawn. He isn’t very old. It is an odd time of the year for her to have such a little fawn. He can’t be two or three weeks old. I know she will come back for him later once she is sure she has lost the hunters.

We can’t cut across the field like I had planned. So, I circle away from the hunters and go through the trees carefully. Max stays close to me bringing up the rear. When I hear something, I stop. Max stops, but his nose is too close to my tail. It makes it very hard to think. I try to concentrate on what I heard.

Max apparently didn’t hear it or isn’t concerned. He sniffs my butt, then licks and I jump away from him.

Damn, she tastes good too. Man, I don’t know that I will be able to stay away from her long enough to let her get used to me. That was just too delicious. Oh baby, I am hard now. If she only knew what following her was doing to me, she wouldn’t turn her back on me.

I know exactly what he is wanting now. I don’t know how safe I am with him. I don’t want him walking behind me now. I stand to face him. He waits till he is sure I am not going to walk on, then he walks over to me and puts his nose in my fur on my neck. It is something a pack would do to one of their own. It is a greeting.

Max walks in front of me. He figured out that I wasn’t turning my back on him again. He walks slow with his head up high. I do the same. We are tasting the air and sniffing for danger in case the hunters have started tracking us.

By the time, we make it back to the house the sun has started going down. The days are getting shorter. Winter is only a short time away. He waits for me to go inside and shift. I grab my clothes and run into the bathroom. I will get dressed in there, so he doesn’t get any ideas.

Max is dressed and sitting on the couch when I open the door and step out of the bathroom. He doesn’t look up. I am nervous again now that we are closed up in the little house together. It is like the walls have closed in on me. I guess I have a touch of Claustrophobia.

“You can come sit down you know. I won’t bite you yet. We don’t have television here, so we just have to make the best of it. If you want, you can take your shower now. I have a little work to do. There should be towels under the sink. Everything you need is in the shower.”

“Oh ok. I guess I could stand a shower. I wish I would have been able to grab some clean clothes before I left home.”

He stands up and crosses the room. He opens the bedroom door. He goes in and opens a drawer. I watch as he pulls out a couple of things. Then he walks back toward me. “Here I think this will work for now. Tomorrow I will take you shopping. You can’t use the same clothes every day.”

He hands me a long tee shirt, one of his I’m sure. Then the other thing he handed me is some kind of pajama bottoms. I guess if I put his things on I can hand wash my things and hang them up to dry.

I thank him and head into the bathroom. I lock the door not that it would stop him if he really wanted in. I strip off and throw my dirty clothes in the sink. I will wash them once I get done with my shower. I take a long hot shower. It feels good. I was surprised he had hot water out here. I didn’t see any electric poles. He must have a generator somewhere.

Once I am clean I put his clothes on. They smell of him of pine and fresh air. He must stay outside a lot. I smell campfire. As if he must have sat close to the fire. I smell spices like cinnamon and ginger.

I wash my things in the sink and hang them up on the shower door to dry. I don’t have many places to put them. Once I am done, I step out of the bathroom. He is still sitting on the couch with his phone. He is talking in an odd language. I don’t understand a word. Not many wolves speak more than one language.

When I come into the room, he hurries to finish up his call. Then puts the phone down on the table beside the couch. He stands up and looks at me. “Well, you look like you feel better. How was the water? Did you have enough hot water?”

“It was wonderful. I had plenty of hot water. Do you run out easily? Maybe I should have asked that before I used it. I hope I left you enough.”

“I, my dear may need to take a cold
shower. Standing here looking at you in my tee shirt I can see things well. For instance, your nipples are hard and standing at attention. Lovely. Just lovely.”

I step back a few steps not that there is any place to go. There is a wall behind me. He steps a little closer. He reaches up and touches the side of my face. “Don’t be scared of me, dear. I am not going to hurt you. I won’t do anything to you that you’re not ready for. If you like you can take the bed. I will stay on the couch.” When he lowers his hand, he lets it brush against my breast. That sends thrills through my body. I shiver and moan. He laughs. I shut my eyes not wanting to look at him. He steps away from me.

If she only knew what that one little touch did for me she would run away howling for help. Oh, baby what she does to me. A cold shower may not work. Oh, how I want her. How I want to taste her juices. How I want to hear her howl underneath me. How I want to feel her quiver around my dick inside her. Oh man, it’s going to be a very long night with her so close. I must control my wants, my desires if I ever stand a chance with her. She isn’t like the humans I have taken to my bed. No, sir. She is much more than that. She will make a perfect mate.

Would you listen to yourself you are talking about taking her as your mate? Your mate! Are you crazy. A mate will tie you down. If you take her for your mate, you have no pack to help protect her. What happens when you're gone on business and she is left alone with your pups? Now I am thinking of her having my pups what is wrong with me. I never wanted anything like this before I met her.

He has gone into the bathroom. Finally, I am rid of him for a second. I see he left his phone. I walk over to it and wait till I hear the water in the shower running. I grab the phone and step outside on the porch. I will call Zeke, but if anyone else answers I will hang up. At least Zeke will know I am alive.

I sit on the steps outside on the porch. I stare at the phone for a bit, then I decide yes, I have to call Zeke. He needs to know that I’m all right.
