Soul of Cole

Cole squinted. “I’m going to start with meeting you out in front of the Children’s Center.”
“Why would you put me in a book?”
“Because, you’re like the chorus in a Greek tragedy.”
“What in the Sam Hill does that mean?”
“In ancient times all the old Greek plays would have an oracle, or a group of people, who stood off to the side of the stage and, from time to time during the course of the play, they would explain what was going on. That’s what you’re going to do in the book.”
“But we’ve only spoken two or three times.”
“That, my friend, is why they call it fiction.”
“That’s the dangest thing I’ve ever heard of. Here I’ve spent my whole life trying to stay out of the newspaper and you come along, a newspaper man, and put me in a book!” The old guy laughed heartily. “Can I have some cool gadgets like McGuyver?”
Cole looked at him and grinned. “Let’s not get carried away.” Cole stared at the grill of the pickup parked in front of their bench. He thought how he could change the facts of the location and the facts of the story enough to not draw direct parallels. Changing the names is easy. So is changing the town and the state. The Children’s Center can be a battered women’s home. This will be a piece of cake, Cole thought.
“Hey, where’d you go?”
Cole chuckled. “I was already laying out the book in my head.”
“Just like that?”
“Just like that.”
Cole stood and extended his hand to the old guy. “I can’t thank you enough. I feel like I have a whole new lease on life. I can do this.”
“Well just make sure I get a copy when you’re done.”
Cole took two steps away from the bench, turned and said, “I’ll even autograph it.”
Cole had only taken about ten steps when he turned back to the old guy on the bench. He was gone. I don’t even know his name, Cole thought and chuckled. I’m sure I’ll run into him again.
Cole strode towards the Children’s Center with new confidence and purpose in his step. He could take what he knew and write what was true, all wrapped up into a mystery novel. I finally have got something that I feel confident about writing. Three more steps and Cole came to a complete stop. He pumped both fists in the air at shoulder height and said out loud, “I’ve got it!” He nearly made the couple that was approaching him jump off the sidewalk. Michael Blackbear said it himself. He gave me the title. I’ve got the title, The Last Casualty. It’s perfect. Wait till I tell Kelly.
Cole Sage will return in Cole to the Bone.
