She smiled at him. It lit her entire face up. “Dinner. Well… that would be nice.” She stood up. “Maybe sometime.” She turned and left without another word, hurrying out the door.
Jared watched her go. The conversation confused him, and he wasn’t sure why he reached out to her like that. She just seemed so… lonely. All that pressure from her family pushing against her, Jared wondered if she had a social life at all.
Or if she was just a hammer in their hands.
As he thought about what that would do to a person, he heard the door open again. A woman with light, golden hair piled up on her head and simple, comfortable light colored clothes walked into the room. She was in her mid-fifties with light bluish gray eyes and a kind smile.
“Hello, Jared,” she said. “My name is Kit. I’m the Medlar healer.”
Jared let out a sigh of pleasure. “Hi, Kit. I’m very happy to see you.”
She walked over and sat down in the bed next to him. He could feel her already starting to draw on the priori.
He’d been magically healed once before, so he knew what to expect. He opened the front of his hospital gown, just enough to expose his chest.
She rubbed her hands together and took a breath. “You ready to get out of this bed?” she asked.
“Like you wouldn’t believe.”
“Oh? Got something nice waiting at home?”
He grinned as she put her hands on his bare skin. He felt the healing glow pass from her palms. The priori flooded him with pleasure and a deep satisfaction.
He sunk back into the bed.
“Yeah,” he said, closing his eyes. “I got two of them.”
