  About the Author

  Traitor

  Loving him could save you…

  Sold. Betrayed. Manipulated.

I’ve been through it all, and yet here I am, still unwilling to walk away from the Don who bought me. I never expected for this to be my life, but right or wrong, I’ve made my choice, and from here, there’s no turning back.

Now, as Mateo and I try to navigate a world rocked by misinformation and manipulation, I find myself at the mercy of an enemy. It seems as if the harder we fight to be together, the more the world tries to tear us apart, and as the tension mounts, so does the fight for our lives.

  Dreams are destroyed.

  Bounties are set.

And as Mateo gears up for war, I gear up for something much greater. . .

Because it seems the only way to save myself, is to betray the woman I used to be.

Traitor is the third book in the dark mafia romance trilogy, Sold to The Don, from author Callie Vincent. This book contains dark themes and is intended for readers 18+

  Charlotte

  “Knock knock.”

The sound of his voice turned my stomach as I heard the metal grated door swing open. His footsteps coming down the stairs made my heart leap into my throat as I scrambled to get to the furthest end of the dungeon he’d tossed me into. Lorenzo lied to me. Through his straight, white teeth, he had lied like the snake Teo told me he was.

And every time I came face to face with him in my chains, I felt like an idiot.

“You look well-rested,” Lorenzo said as he pulled up a chair.

I pressed my back against the damp, grimy cement wall as I heard something scatter off into a corner. And I forced myself not to theorize as to what kind of animal could be down here with me.

Waiting for me to die so it could feast on my flesh.

“What do you want?” I asked.

Lorenzo spread his legs wide, as if he were giving me a look-see into what I could have if I were his ‘good little girl’.

Every time he called me that I wanted to claw his damn eyes out.

“I wanted to see if you were ready to eat, is all. It’s been two days, you know, and the human body can only go so long without nourishment.”

I spat at him. “I’d rather starve than eat with you.”

His eyes locked with mine. “You really are as feisty as he said you’d be.”

  I blinked. “Who?”

  He grinned. “Mateo.”

  “You’ve—spoken to him?”

He nodded. “Oh, yes. On several occasions over the past forty-eight hours. He really doesn’t like the fact that you’re gone.”

  My eyes watered. “He—he doesn’t?”

Lorenzo spread his legs wider. “Sure you aren’t hungry?”

His words snapped me from my trance. “I’d rather eat the rats that are down here with me than share a meal with you.”

He grinned. “Actually, it’s more like snakes.”

  I blinked. “What?”

He stood. “Anyway, you’ve got maybe another day in you before your body starts to give out.”

I started tugging at my chains. “There are snakes down here with me?”

I hate snakes. I hate this place. I hate this man, and I have to get out of here.

  “Lorenzo!” I exclaimed.

He slid his chair back into a corner I couldn’t see because it was so dark. “Yes?”

I swallowed hard. “Can I at least come upstairs? Please?”

He cocked his head before he took a step toward me. I gazed up at him from beneath my eyelashes, hoping and praying that he might have a bit of mercy on me. I knew he was trying to break me, though. Just like Teo had attempted to do.

And while I tried to stay strong, I knew I’d do just about anything to get out of his snake-ridden dungeon Lorenzo had tossed me into.

  “Say that again,” he commanded.

My lower lip quivered. “Can I come upstairs, please?”

He grinned salaciously as he started unbuckling his pants. “Again.”

I started trembling. “Please, Lorenzo. Just let me come upstairs.”

I watched him pull out his cock and I closed my eyes. I braced myself as tears rushed down my cheeks, waiting for the inevitable. I waited for his hand to grip my hair. I waited for him to shove his cock between my lips.

But instead, I heard him spit before his hand slapped my cheek.

“Beg me, Charlotte. Beg me to take you upstairs.”

When I opened my eyes, I saw him stroking himself, his hand, covered in spit, racing up and down his length. I quickly looked away. Except, that’s when his hand gripped my hair, so he could bring my eyes back to his.

  “Now,” he growled.

I sniffled. “Please, Lorenzo. I’ll do whatever you ask. Just get me out of this basement.”

  “Oh, that’s it.”

Tears rushed down my cheeks. “Seriously, I’ll cook, or clean. I’ll give you massages and make your bed every morning.”

“Oh, yeah. That’s the stuff. Come on. Keep going.”

I started babbling. “I’ll tell you bedtime stories and never speak of Mateo. I’ll eat whatever you want me to and I’ll never try to escape. Just don’t leave me here with these snakes, seriously. I’m petrified of them, and I won’t sleep a wink, and then I’ll--.”

“Fuck! Yeah! Oh, shit. Right there. Fucking hell.”

I felt something rain down against my face and I curled my lips over my teeth. I closed my eyes and held my breath, hoping and praying I didn’t get his come anywhere inside of my body. His hand shoved my head off to the side and I collapsed into a puddle, grimacing as I wiggled my face around in it.

Anything to get the feel of him off me.

“Enjoy the snakes tonight, Charlotte. We’ll see how you feel about things in the morning,” he said through his panted breaths.

I hated how I screamed after him as he backtracked up the stairs.

“Lorenzo, no! Please! I’m begging you, take me with--!”

The metal grate slamming closed caused me to shriek in pain. In anger. In horror and frustration. I had no idea how long I
d been away from home now. I had no idea if Mom even cared that I was gone. For all I knew, Lorenzo was lying to me about Teo just to see me squirm. Just to torture me even more.

And as I heard a slithering sound across the floor in front of me, my stomach roared out with a need for food.

Sending the little bugs that kept me company scattering into the wind.

“Someone help me,” I said through my sobs.

I hung my head in shame as I let the tears freely flow. I felt like an idiot. I felt like a spoiled little brat. But worse than either of those, I felt helpless. At least when I was with Teo, he made me feel as if I controlled my own destiny. At least with Teo, there were times where I felt like he saw me as his equal instead of someone beneath him.

But here with Lorenzo, I was nothing but a plaything. Something to torture, and break, just for the sick pleasure he derived from it. I wrinkled my nostrils at the smell of him still against my skin. I looked down at the puddle beside me, watching his arousal float around on the top like little white lies that whispered back to me at night.

  You should’ve listened.

  You should’ve heeded his advice.

You shouldn’t have bit the hand that was feeding you.

“I hope you can forgive me someday, Teo,” I whispered into the darkness.

Because I had no idea what paying for my transgressions felt like until Lorenzo chained me up in this fucking place.

I collapsed against the wall behind me as the slithering sound came closer. I curled my legs into my chest as my muscles cried out in pain. My head lobbed off to the side as silent tears fell from my eyes as they eased themselves closed.

And as darkness pulled me under, thoughts of Teo filled my mind.

Lulling me into a deep sleep where he was there to wipe my tears away, hold me close, and whisper how absolutely lovely he thought me to be.

  Mateo

I threw back my second—no, third—glass of whiskey. I let out a bombastic burp as I sat there, staring at a painting I’d been working on for the past three days. I reached for the crystal carafe of amber liquid and poured myself another three-fingered glass, my eyes studying the curves of Char’s body I had carved out onto my canvas.

Then, I threw back my third drink of the morning before a hiccup worked its way up the back of my throat.

At first, I’d been angry. Angry and pissed off that Char actually sought to leave me. I thought her and I had a good thing going. I thought we made a great team, and I thought she’d been comfortable. I gave her as much freedom as I possibly could without worrying myself over the idea of her being a flight risk. I gave her everything from food to clothes to jewelry to an entire upper apartment with an ocean view all to herself.

And this was how she repaid me?

  “Fucking bitch,” I murmured.

You know damn good and well you don’t feel that way about her.

I sighed as I poured myself another glass of whiskey over the ball of ice that had melted to half its size. I forced my eyes away from my painting because it made me ache for her presence. For her warmth. For the comfort of her kiss and the understanding nature of her eyes. I missed her more than I could stand, but I knew that if I attempted to pursue her too quickly, Lorenzo would do nothing but slit her throat and dump her body at my doorstep.

I had to play this right, lest I lose her forever.

“Why the hell did you have to be so stupid?” I murmured to myself.

A knock came at the large double doors and I set my glass between my legs. My head lobbed back as I drew in sobering breaths, trying to piece myself together for whoever the fuck was disturbing me. With each passing day, I grew more worried about Char’s life. About the treatment she was enduring beneath Lorenzo’s grimy, sleazy little thumb.

“Just three more days. Three more days, Teo,” I whispered to myself.

“Mr. Emiliano?” my bodyguard asked through the door.

  I groaned. “What?”

“Your wife is here to see you.”

I was on my feet in a flash with my back straight and my shoulders rolled back. “Send her in.”

And when she walked through the threshold into my painting room, she ran her eyes over my disheveled nature.

“You really do know how to pout, don’t you?” she asked.

I rooted myself to my spot. “What do you want?”

She grinned. “Can’t a wife pay a visit to her husband every now and again?”

“Not when neither of them don’t love each other, no.”

Her face fell blank. “You couldn’t keep your little pet forever, Mateo. We still have much to accomplish, and your silly little women are nothing more than a distraction from that.”

Anger bubbled in my gut. “You had something to do with this, didn’t you?”

She placed her hand over her heart as if I had offended her. “Me? You really think I helped a Lucchese arrange something like that? Oh, no no no. Your little pet did that just fine all by herself.”

I charged her and wrapped my hand around her throat. I roared as I barreled her against the wall, knocking the wind out of her. I watched her struggle as her eyes widened. I listened to her gasp for air as tears rushed to her eyes. I squeezed harder, watching a fear I’d never seen in her before rise up behind a pair of eyes that haunted me every night I closed my own.

  “Mr. Emiliano!” my bodyguard exclaimed.

And before I knew it, I was wrestled away from my wife.

I watched as she fell to her knees, wheezing and coughing for air. I shrugged my guard off and whipped around, only to find Lyle standing behind me. He shot me a glare before I heaved a heavy sigh and I patted his shoulder.

  “Thanks,” I said breathlessly.

He cocked his head. “You made me promise I’d keep you from killing her. Just doing my job, Mr. Emiliano.”

I dismissed him with a wave of my hand and turned back to my wife, watching as she picked herself up off the floor. Her hand massaged her throat as her eyes shot daggers in my direction, and I forced my hands into my pockets.

I needed to keep them to myself for this conversation.

“You’re going to pay for that,” she growled.

I drew in a sobering breath. “Don’t forget who feeds you, Rosana. Because the minute you married me, you gave up your right to your father’s money.”

  Her eyes met mine. “And?”

I shrugged. “Don’t think for one second I won’t strip you of everything you’re used to. Your credit card. My checkbook. That loyal bodyguard who follows you everywhere.”

Her nostrils flared. “My father would shoot you dead if you ever dared.”

“I died the moment I married you, Rosana. You and I both know that. He’d be doing me a favor at that point.”

She pointed her finger at me. “You hold nothing over me. No power, no leeway, nothing.”

I made my way to the double doors. “If that’s what you need to tell yourself in order to sleep at night next to your flavor of the week, then that’s fine. But, don’t forget your reality, Rosana. Because at the end of the day, you’ll always be a slave to the man who owns your bank accounts.”

“You get back here and talk to me!” she roared.

I strolled out of my painting room as the easel collapsed to the floor. I went to turn around before Lyle caught my shoulder, forcing me to continue looking ahead. He shook his head curtly at me and I stuffed my feelings down for Char long enough to continue walking away.

Long enough to get far enough away so that I couldn’t hear my wife’s little temper tantrum.

While my guards hauled her off my property.

I made my way out the back patio doors and found myself staring at the ocean. I toed out of my patent leather shoes and walked all the way out to the shoreline, allowing the sound of the waves to drown out the sound of my wife shrieking in anger. I closed my eyes and let the soothing salty breeze wash over me.

  Like Char’s breath did ever
y morning when I woke up.

My brain turned a thousand miles a second, and with every thought that rolled through my mind, I felt my emotional disposition finally falling into place. And when I opened my eyes, a thought occurred to me.

I love her more than all of this.

Rosana was right. I couldn’t keep my playthings forever. But, Char wasn’t just a plaything anymore. She was mine. My woman. My love. The person who brought joy and peace into everything about my life. And without her, I felt lost at sea. For all I cared, my empire could burn to the ground behind me while I walked away from it.

So long as I had Char at my side.

“You’re stronger than this,” I murmured to myself.

  I need a fucking drink.

I turned on my bare feet and marched back into the beach house. I tried to ignore how quiet it was without Char’s voice as I changed my suit. I tried to ignore the lack of her perfume that filled the hallways as I slipped into another pair of shoes. I tried to focus on what needed to happen next as I slid my arm into my suit coat. I knew exactly where I was going and exactly who I needed to see in order to set the wheels in motion for my future plans.

Plans to get Char back, no matter the cost.

“Lyle? Don’t wait up. I have a dinner date I don’t want to miss,” I called out.

Lyle’s voice sounded from the kitchen. “Sir?”

I grinned as I reached for the doorknob. “You know how I hate being called that.”

“Are you sure you don’t need anyone coming with you?”
