74. The George F. Kaufman–Marc Connelly script was a satire of Hollywood, featuring a very serious actor who was so seriously bad that he was funny. Studio executives let Merton believe he had gotten a very serious part in a tragic drama, but, unknown to him, they filmed it as a comedy. A remake of the film in 1947 starred the comedian Red Skelton.
