The hair on the back of my neck stands.
“Don’t move,” Lorelai says slowly. Her eyes widen and her gaze is locked on something—which I’m guessing is the jailor’s dog—past my shoulder.
“He’s uh…he’s a bit more than just a dog,” she says. Her hands slowly rise to form a circle in front of her face.
Hot breath brushes against my neck. On both sides. “Wha….
“Grrrrr…” Another growl this time coming from my right.
Lorelai shakes her head in warning that I shouldn’t talk.
I swallow. I slide my eyes to the left, but don’t move. In the shadows…I see something that is shaped like a beast. I slide my eyes to the right and there is a similar shape.
My heart beats faster. Is it possible…I look at the floor in front of me and there, in the shadows, I see not one, not two, but the shape of three dog heads with what look like giant fangs rising up behind me.
“Just a minute more,” Lorelai whispers. The glob of energy in her hand is not purple but a bright red color.
“Easy for you to say,” I whisper. Because I stand between her and this giant beast I can’t see but I know stands behind me. A giant drop of…what is that drool? Hits the floor in front of me.
“Don’t move, don’t even breath,” she says and as though in slow motion she lifts her hands and with it the ball of red energy and pulls back her arms.
“Rrrrrr….” The growling behind me is a symphony of sound also coming from my left and from my right. Oh my goddess, the three-headed beast is going to eat me alive.
“Duck now!” Lorelai yells and heaves the blood-red ball toward the giant beast behind me.
I hit the ground and roll to my back.
Whizzzz!
“Rrrrr! Woof! Woof!”
Lorelai’s red ball of light whizzes through the air. The force of Loreilai’s energy field lifts the dog up on its hind legs. I turn. He bites and snaps at the light. The ball splits in two and circles around the entire body and all three heads.
“Rar, rar, rar,” the three-headed dog beast yelps and tries to jump away.
Thud!
He lands on his feet and falls to his side.
“What the frack?” So fast, my mind can barely process all that happened. A hand juts in front of my face.
“Come on then,” Lorelai says. I clasp her hand and hop up. I dust the dirt from my shirt and pants. Lying frozen inside the red ball is the giant dog-beast—that can neither be called Wolveskin nor dog. His teeth giant razors bigger than my head.
“That? That’s the jailor’s dog?” I say.
“Well, it’s his pet,” Lorelai says, “I wouldn’t call him a dog. I’d call him more of a beast.”
Lorealai jumps over the four paws. I take a deep breath and try to ignore how close I was to being decapitated by this beast. I step around the four legs and follow Lorelai down the hallway and deeper into the cellar so that we can do what we came down her to do, which is set Sarkany and Taraz free.
