Ethan felt a hand on his shoulder, and although he didn’t know who it was, he was thankful for the encouragement. Ethan took in a deep breath, then let it out, just in time to greet Leila. From the corner of his eyes, he saw the other two girls take their positions by Leila. And although he had noticed them slightly, he didn’t give them too much attention. Instead, he focused on Leila.

His eyes traced her beautiful face, her eyes, her cheeks her mouth. It took him his whole strength to resume himself from kissing her right there in front of everyone, in front of the God that was about to listen to their prayers and hopefully bless their union.

“You look breathtaking.” he whispered as he took her hand, his fingers curling around hers.

Leila smiled and looked away shyly, her eyes holding as many emotions as his. Ethan always remembered the moment in which he first grabbed his hand, but he failed to remember the ceremony. His mind had been so busy trying to process the messages his heart sent, that it failed to realize what was going on around him.

The words of the priest had been a blur, nothing but a mere whistle that passed by his ears, vanishing into midair just as soon as they had appeared. The moments passed by fast too, they were like a blur, a mere image passing by the corner of his eyes.

Of course, there was one moment he could clearly remember. Two, if he were to be completely honest. The first one was when he said:

“I do.” It was for the first time in his life that he understood how powerful words could be. Those two words felt like they were piercing through hi soul, like they broke into his heart and found refuge there. It felt weird, but oddly satisfying, knowing that he had pledged a life of fidelity and love to one person alone.

The other moment it was when the priest finally declared them husband and wife. It was in that moment that Ethan had realized they had actually made it. After years and years of suffering, after having his heart broken and mended, by the same person, they had actually found the path that lead to one another.

Leila was his wife now. She was his to hold, to cherish and to love. She was his better half, the light to the darkness, the hope in his despair. She was everything. She was his breath, his heart his soul. And he sealed that with a kiss.

In that moment, he felt like he had it all. But was still thirsty for more. Now that he was a husband, he wanted to be a dad too. He had never had such thoughts before, but being there, in front of God, he couldn’t help but wish for an extended family.

“I love you.” He whispered in her ear.

  “I love you too.”

Leila took in a deep breath, then let it out. Her hand rested on her baby bump while she struggled to walk to the car. The sun was high in the sky, the weather hot and unpleasant for a woman who was about to give birth. Beads of sweat were forming on her forehead, her hands grabbed onto the edge of the door, her fingers pressing hard onto it until her knuckles turned white. From the corner of her eyes, she saw Ethan get inside the car, but even when he was rushing, he seemed to be moving in slow motions.

Yes, it could have been the hormones, or the stress of knowing your baby could come out any moment now, but she felt like she was going to kill Ethan for not starting the car already. Leila winced and bit on her lower lip as another contraction appeared, the sides of her belly contracted with the pain, her breath accelerating. She tried to remember all the things she had read about giving birth, and the lessons’ she’d got at those training classes. Of course, she could neither remember nor follow them. Luckily, her instincts were kicking in.

“Just drive already!” She screamed, as she grabbed his arm.

Ethan looked at her in fear, his eyes showing more anxiousness than she thought possible. Without as much as a word he nodded and stepped on the gas. Ethan was usually a great driver, but on that day, he took every possible whole and wrong turn there was. He sped down the road, passing on red lights. If she was to remember correctly, she could even recall a person or two that escaped a near death experience. Luckily, she had been too much in pain to realize all those details. They had only come back to her later.

The hospital was only a couple of minutes away, but to Leila, it felt like an eternity had passed. She tried to keep her mind busy with thoughts. She tried imagining what it would look like to hold her daughter, or how her son will react to holding his sister for the first time. She tried busying her mind with such thoughts, but even that became in vain. The pain was stronger than all those.

Being on her second delivery would have meant that they would be more ready. But Ethan and she were just as clueless as the first time. Especially Ethan. If it hadn’t been for the nannies help, he would have forgotten her behind.

Finally, they had made it. Ethan pulled the car in front of the hospital and got out, screaming on the top of his lungs for a wheel chair. Leila was embarrassed even through the pain. She felt the curious eyes that were thrown her way. She hid her face behind her hair, her hand still holding onto her bump as she lowered herself on the chair that had just been brought to her.

Ethan ran beside her, his hand grasping hers as they rushed through the hospital hallways in an attempt to make it to the maternity ward in time. At some point, however, she had pushed his hand away, as yet another contraction appeared.

Leila had been too caught up in her breathing to realize, but they had eventually made it to the delivery room. She was now laid on her back, her eyes set on the large lamps above her. Each leg was on a different side of the bed, her hand clenching to the bars. The contractions came one after the other, her creams became louder and more ear piercing.

“Ethan do something!” She remembered screaming as she pushed, her back arching “You did this to me. Now do something!”

Then, like a miracle, she felt it. The baby had entered the world. The pain was gone, it was replaced by relief, but also by a familiar kind of love. In the following moments, she heard the first baby cry. It was so gentle yet loud. It pierced through the silence, filling her heart with joy and indescribable feelings.

“Congratulations. You have a healthy baby girl.” The nurse announced as she handed her their daughter.

Leila reached for her with trembling hands, all the pain she had felt before now being nothing but a fading memory. Holding her in her arms could never be forgotten. She had held her in her womb for nine months, now she was in her hands.

“Look at our little princess.” She heard Ethan say, his voice low tender.

He caressed their daughter’s cheek, his hand cupping her head, before he planted a kiss on her forehead. Leila felt like crying, but she was too tired to do that, so instead, she smiled. Her lips curled, her hand holding tight onto her daughter’s hand. She felt her heartbeats match her own. Their breaths were one too, as if reflecting the long months in which they’d been one.

“Do you have a name for her?” The nurse asked.

From the corner of her eyes, she saw Ethan open his mouth. But before he got to say a word Leila warned:

“No Ethan, I told you. We are not naming out daughter, Bexley!”

“Actually, I was about to suggest we name her Rosy.”
