Troublemaker Page 10

by Erin Trejo

“I know that, Shyla. I fucked up but that’s what I do. I don’t know how to change that but I need to try, yeah? She’s the best thing that’s ever happened to me.” She watches me intently before she smiles and grabs her purse. She closes the door and grabs my arm tugging me down the road.

“Where are we goin’?” I ask walking along with her. We head down a few blocks before she turns down a side road. Had she been working this close this whole time? I should have known but I sat outside that apartment like a bitch and never followed her to work.

“Right here,” she says with a grin that could get a man killed. I look up and then back to her when the idea hits me.

“I need a favor. Go in there and ask them to play Brett Young, In Case You Didn’t Know.” Her eyes light up and her mouth falls open. I motion for her to go and I watch as she does. Looking through the window I can see my girl. She doesn’t see me and that’s how I want it for now. When the music comes on, I walk in and watch her. Her head falls forward and sadness creeps across her face. I walk toward her, my heart in my throat as I go.

“It’s true you know?” Dani turns her head and looks up at me with those big blue eyes full of tears.

“You’re here?” she asks as if she’s imagining me.

“The song is true. You had my heart a long time ago, Dani.”

“You said th-,” shaking my head I don’t let her finish. I don’t want her to. I need her to hear me now.

“You drive me insane. You listen to music that I hate. You ramble more than anyone I’ve ever met in my life. You know useless facts that make absolutely no sense and you annoy the fuck out of me.” Her eyes narrow on mine and I fight the laughter that wants to escape me.

“That was not what you are supposed to say.”

  “What should I say?”

“That you love me and can’t live without me. That I’m the only person you want. You should say I love you very much, probably more than anybody could love another person.”

“What movie is that from?” I chuckle when I see the look in her eyes.

“Fifty first dates but that’s not the point! You should have said all that anyway. We should be our own movie, Cross.” She stomps her foot and I don’t know that I could love her anymore.

“You’re crazy,” I tell her watching that fire ignite in her eyes.

“Do you want to know what’s crazy? The fact th-,”

“Dani! Shut up and kiss me.” Her mouth falls open but she wraps her arms around my neck and kisses me passionately. Fuck, I’ve missed this, I’ve missed her. When she pulls back, I cup her cheeks in my hands and look her in the eye.

“I know I fucked up. I know I did things wrong but I needed to find out who the hell I was, Dani. You were right. I never questioned myself. I never knew what or who I was without her and I didn’t have to. Not until you. I only want you, Dani. I want you and all your quirks that annoy me and make me laugh. I just…fuck, I just want you but this is it. I need to hear it from you. My shits packed and I’m ready to ride if you don’t want me. I just…fuck. I need to hear you say it one way or another.” Her eyes fill with tears as the song repeats. I knew this was a song that meant a lot to her when she played it a thousand times for me. I just never saw the underlying message she was giving me.

“I’d be lying if I told you I could live this life without you,” she sings the words along with the song when I lean down and kiss her.

Our lives were never perfect. Hell they probably never will be, but if this is as close as I can get? I want it. I want it all and I want it with her.

“Now, tell me something epically romantic for the end of our movie,” she giggles.

“Our movie isn’t endin’, darlin’. It just started.”

“Cross! Come on! You can’t swoop in here and do that whole play the song and profess your love for me and not have an ending! What the hell is wrong with you?” There she is. The crazy random girl I’ve grown to love.

“My heart’s yours, Dani. What more do you want?” She grins up at me.

  “That was perfect.”

  “Still my little troublemaker.”

  THE END.
