“I know,” she whispered, just before there was a rustling sound. I heard a muffled scream right before the line went dead. I tightened my grip on the steering wheel and looked at Alec, who wore the same cold expression that I did. This fucker was gonna die.

He had her up ahead, yanking her out of the trunk of the car by her hair. I slammed the truck into park and Alec and I both jumped out the truck, guns raised and ready to fire. Leif yanked her around, holding her against him as he drew his own weapon and pointed it at us.

“How do you want to play this?” Alec asked.

I shrugged. “I could just shoot the fucker.” I took another step forward, trying to figure out if he had the balls to actually shoot.

“Why take all the fun out of it?”

“I guess you’re right. I mean, we could at least take him out in the woods and have some fun first.”

“Hey!” Leif shouted. “Don’t come any closer. I’ll fucking shoot you.”

“There, there,” I said placatingly. “There’s no need to panic. We know this hard on you. It’s a rough world. I mean, with all the shit going on in the world, it’s no wonder you snapped. There’s too much fucking shit to worry about. Climate change, light pollution, the wind turbines killing all the birds.” I sighed and shook my head. “It’s amazing that you’ve even made it this far in the world. And I bet it’s no better at work. I bet they make you work forty hours a week. I would also guess that they don’t use eco friendly pencils at work. Am I right?”

“What are you doing?” Alec asked.

  “I’m bonding with him.”

  “That’s bonding?”

“Yeah, I’m showing him that I understand his plight.”

“You think you can bond with him over climate change?”

“Well, isn’t that what all these snowflakes are into right now?”

“Craig, he’s holding a fucking gun on your wife. Try a little harder.”

“Fine. I can be fucking nice.” I turned back to Leif and did my best to be nice. “So, hey there, Leif. Uh, nice weather we’re having.”

“That’s your version of nice? You suck at this.”

“What the fuck do you want me to do? Am I supposed to throw down my gun, all in the name of love?”

“No, jackass. Just try to appear calming and negotiable.”

“You want me to appear calming?”

  “Yeah, that’s what I want.”

“You want me to be calming?” I shouted.

“Yeah, be fucking calming!” Alec yelled back.

“I can do calming. Fuck, I can be the calmest bastard on the face of the planet,” I shouted back.

“Oh, I’d like to see that.”

I threw down my gun and held my arms wide. “What’s more fucking calm than this?” I started walking toward Leif, arms still spread wide. “Is this calming enough for you? Am I making you feel better?”

  “Just stop!” Leif shouted.

“Don’t!” Reese pleaded. “What are you doing? Don’t do this!”

“You’re not gonna shoot me,” I said with all the confidence in the world. “Just relax, Reese. He’s not gonna shoot me.”

I kept advancing and I could see the fear and anger in Leif’s eyes. He was gonna shoot me. But not if I willed him not to. I just had to keep telling him he wasn’t going to shoot me. I was only about ten feet away now.

“You’re not gonna shoot me. You don’t want to.”

“Please,” Reese cried, tears streaming down her face.

“He’s not gonna shoot me. He doesn’t really want to.”

Leif’s hand shook and he closed his eyes. I had him. And then he opened his eyes and something dark took over.

“Holy shit. He’s gonna shoot me!” I dove to the side, just barely moving out of the way in time. I felt the bullet hit my arm, but it was better than the kill shot. I heard Alec fire, shooting Leif in the arm. I jumped up and tackled him to the ground, throwing the gun away. I was too pissed right now to have a gun in my hands. I might end up shooting the fucker. I punched him in the face and then grabbed him by the collar, pulling him closer to me.

  “You fucking shot me!”

I threw him back down and punched him repeatedly until he passed out. When I finally got up, my hands were bloodied, but I wasn’t raging nearly as much.

  “Feel better?” Alec asked.

  “He fucking shot me.”

  “So you keep saying.”

“I just can’t believe it. I told him not to fucking shoot me.”

“Well, that’s the thing about crazy people. They tend to not listen.”

“Still,” I said, staring down at the fucker on the ground. “He fucking shot me.”

Reese came up to me and wrapped her arms around my waist. I turned in her arms until I had her snuggled up against my chest. “Thank you for coming after me.”

I sighed and kissed her on the head. “Yeah, we’re gonna have a serious talk about how the fuck you got kidnapped for a third time when we get home. Seriously, woman. It’s like you have no sense of danger.”

“Correct me if I’m wrong,” Alec interrupted, “but this your fifth gunshot wound in just a month, right?”

“Hey, it’s been like a month and a half. And this doesn’t count. It’s just a graze.”

Before I knew what was happening, Alec pulled out his gun and shot me in the same fucking leg he shot me in last time.

“What the fuck? You just shot me!”

  “It’s just a graze. It doesn’t count.”

  CHAPTER FORTY-SIX

  Reese

It was the last day of school and the summer was starting. I had big plans for the summer. I was finally going to have Jessica redo our house. We never did paint over the wall with all the complaints and I almost considered leaving it up as a tribute of sorts to all the guys. But then I wouldn’t be able to have anyone over without starting a huge fight. The animal heads had been completely removed before I moved back in with Craig. There was no way I was staying in the house with those beady eyes staring at me.

I drove to the store to pick up a few groceries before I headed home. After loading the groceries, I unlocked the car and opened the door, but something was thrown over my head before I could get in. I screamed, but a hand clamped over my face and then I was being dragged backwards. I kicked and fought, doing everything Craig had taught me, but then there was another set of hands on me, grabbing my ankles. I was carried and tossed into a trunk. I knew this all too well from my kidnapping days.

I had learned to carry my phone on me at all times after the last time I was kidnapped. It had saved my life. Luckily, I had a tracker that Craig had insisted on putting in my arm. I thought it was a little creepy. Now I knew why he did it. I pulled the hood off my head and spit the fuzz out of my mouth. Yanking my phone out of my back pocket, I pulled up Craig’s number.

  “Hello, my little pixie!”

  “Craig, I’ve been kidnapped!”

  “Again? Seriously?”

“Yes, seriously! Get your ass on the road and get me!”

“Uh, that’s gonna be kind of difficult. I’m in a meeting and then I have a lot of work to do.”

“What?” I screeched. “Are you saying that you’re not coming for me?”

I heard him sigh and say something to one of the guys. “Alright, I guess there’s no way around this. I’ll leave in a few minutes and catch up to you.”

“I’m gonna kill you when I get home! How can you act like this isn’t a big deal?”

“Well, it’s just that we’ve already done this before. It gets tiring coming to the rescue all the time. That’s why I had you take self-defense classes.”

“I want a divorce when this is over.”

“Yeah, I’ve heard that before too. I’ll see you soon.”

He hung up on me. That fucker. I dialed Brooke’s number, fuming that my husband didn’t seem to care that I had been kidnapped. Again.

  “Hey, what’s shakin’?”
<
br />   “Brooke, I’ve been kidnapped!”

“And you’re using your phone call to talk to me? Wow. I feel special.”

  “I called Craig already-”

“Oh, so I’m an afterthought. I see.”

“What? Would you just listen? I called Craig and he made it sound like it was a chore to come get me!”

“Let me ask you this. What are these kidnappers like?”

  “I don’t know! I didn’t see them.”

“Well, it just seems to me that they’re pretty stupid if they didn’t even check you for a phone first. Did you try jumping out of the trunk?”

“I’m locked in here. How would I do that?”

“There’s a latch above you. Just yank on it and jump out. Problem solved. Seriously, you don’t need Craig to save you.”

“And what if I’m in the middle of nowhere?”

“Well, I guess the kidnapper puts you back in the trunk. Seems pretty simple to me. Honestly, I’m not sure why you even had to call me.”

“Does anyone care that I’ve been kidnapped?”

“Sweetie, we’ve already done this before. Maybe if something else happened, I mean, something exciting. Next time try for a bomb being strapped to your chest and you’re tied to the tree. Ooh! Maybe you could be hanging from the side of the building by a rope. You should definitely talk to Claire. I’m sure she’d have some good ideas.”

“I can’t believe it. The two people that I would think would come running to my aid don’t even give a fuck that I’ve been kidnapped!”

“Yeah, maybe you should talk to someone about that.”

I felt the car slow and started to panic. “Oh my God. We’re slowing down.”

“Alright, sweetie. Have fun. Let me know how it goes!”

She hung up and the car pull to a stop. I didn’t know what to do, but I was going out swinging. There was no way I was going to die in here. And when I got out, I was getting a divorce and a new best friend. I heard the pop of the trunk and then bright light shone in. There were two figures standing over me. When I could finally see, my mouth dropped open. Brooke shot me a finger wave and Craig grinned at me.

  “Ready to get married?”
