A Guide to Terry’s World of Shifters

  Hi Readers,

Wow, we’ve definitely come a long way! With so many books, characters, plots, and happily-ever-afters, sometimes it can be hard to keep track of everything going on. Especially if you’re new to my stories, it might sometimes feel a bit like something was missed along the way.

But have no fear! This section is for anyone who wants a quick crash course on the basic building blocks of my world. If you’re hoping to avoid some major spoilers while also just getting a feel for what makes the wild world of Terry so special and unique, then you’re in the right place!

Also, I’ve put in a few thoughts and notes from my personal asides for my long-term readers who might like to know even a little more than what I normally say about my books.

  A World With Shifters

With a few exceptions, my books take place in our modern day. Only there’s wolves, bears, cats, and dragons (and more!) living out there among humans. But humans don’t know of their existence. For centuries, shifters have lived in secret, their identity hidden from the human worl
d. This is possible because shifters are able to assume human form at will, so the majority of them live among us like normal people most of the time. However, there are some major differences between the types of shifters, and knowing those may mean the difference between life or death in a world where good and evil collide on a daily basis.

Wolves: All Bite and No Bark

Wolves were the first shifter I wrote, for a variety of reasons. Real wolves and their complex social structures have always fascinated me, and I wanted to reflect that in my world building (while also adding some fun twists along the way). Also, wolves are just really cool!

First and foremost, wolf shifters are absolutely monogamous, choosing one person (their “mate”) that they will be with for the rest of their life. A mate isn’t just a spouse or a significant other; it’s much stronger, more akin to destiny or an invisible pull toward someone that is meant to be your better half. That’s why when a wolf shifter finds their mate, they’re willing to put everything on the line for him or her. Granted, there’s still choices on the part of the two parties to work it out, grow together, and just generally be good people too. But when mates fall in love, nothing can stand in the way of their bond, even in the face of impossible odds or personal struggles.

Similar to wolves in the wild, shifter wolves also have pack hierarchies. In fact, the first book, Alpha Games, centers largely around that. Aspen, an alpha female, struggles to choose between three men. One is full-blooded alpha, whereas his two half-brothers are only part alpha. Don’t worry, though. The brothers get their own stories too!

In fact, alphas are central to wolf interaction and chains of command. Every pack has one or two alphas, usually a mated male and female. Packs can range in size from only a small family (Alpha Games) to a large group consisting of multiple families of wolves that all follow the alpha for guidance and leadership (Alpha Defender). Larger groups will often have a beta, a second-in-command, that helps execute the alpha’s wishes. These family or social groups often depend on each other for survival, including protecting their identity as wolf shifters, which is critically important in a curious world full of humans that don’t know they exist.

So what makes an alpha an alpha? As in nature, it often comes down to survival of the fittest. The strongest survive, and the strongest of the strongest run the show. So usually, the characters in my books are alpha, half alpha, or at least stronger than the average wolf shifter. And many times, these men and women have needed to challenge others for their spot at the top of the chain (Alpha Contender).

But why all the fighting, Terry? Why can’t wolves get along? Two reasons. Most wolves hate humans. In general, they see humans as beneath them because wolf shifters are faster, stronger, and more powerful. The other reason is there’s a critical shortage of alpha females out there, and there’s a lot of strong alpha males more than willing to put their lives on the line to protect one.

We later find out that this shortage is due to hidden experiments being done that led to the decimation of many wolf shifter women, especially alpha females. As such, they’re both revered and sought after by every single male wolf. It isn’t until later in the story (Alpha Defender) we discover that the highest governing body of wolves—the Tribunal—is actually responsible for this, leading to many wolves defecting and mistrusting the Tribunal in spite of its overwhelming power.

Like in real wolves, scent is also a big part of wolf shifter society. Pheromones—the microscopic signals our bodies send to communicate to others, usually through scent—are vastly stronger and more potent for perceptive wolf senses. Which is why in Alpha Contender, Misty finds herself constantly beset upon by sexy men, all hoping to convince her to mate them and not the ten other guys vying for her. It’s also why characters like Lacey (Alpha Defender) or Rose (Alpha Rogue) go to great lengths to hide the fact they’re alpha female in order to protect the fact that they’re incredibly rare and sought after.

Another fun aspect of wolf shifters—particularly alphas—is that they have the chance of possessing “alpha powers.” These powers range from super strength (Alpha Rogue) and durability (Alpha Protector) to even more deadly and powerful abilities, as seen in books like Alpha Defender or Felix. (No spoilers on those. You’ll just have to read them.) These abilities are often hereditary, and the stronger the alpha, the stronger the power they have. In the hands of the right man or woman, these powers are used to protect loved ones and save the weak from the powerful. In the wrong hands…

Speaking of the wrong hands, readers will often see references to the Tribunal in my books. This includes bear and dragon books too (particularly series like Dragons of Drakkaris and Club Crimson). So what is the Tribunal? Basically, long ago, a bunch of powerful wolf families got together and appointed themselves the de facto rulers of the wolf world. At first, wolf packs deferred to the Tribunal, as the Tribunal’s first goal was to protect humanity form the knowledge of shifters by enacting laws and punishments to keep that secret safe.

But over time, the Tribunal got more and more power hungry, going beyond their stated purpose into corruption and evil for the sake of maintaining their control over the world. This has gone even to the extent of performing horrific experiments in the hopes of eradicating humanity (Lock) and creating monsters to help enforce their iron grip on wolf society. Along with this, the strongest alpha wolves (and their powers) belong solely to the Tribunal and their select families.

Wolves from the Tribunal, like Fifi and Lacey, saw this corruption and turned their backs on the Tribunal, often at great personal risk. Other wolves, like Lock (Alpha Contender, Alpha Defender, Lock) or Rowan (Alpha Games, Lock) have found their own ways to wage a war against the Tribunal in the hopes of dismantling the evil organization. And thankfully, because of their efforts, they’ve largely succeeded in doing that, making the world a safer place in general.

But even if the Tribunal isn’t running the show, there are lots of power-hungry wolf shifters still out there, waiting to take advantage of whomever or whatever they can, often leading to intervention on the part of dragon enforcers to put a stop to their dealings.

In spite of the wolves that want to make the world bad, a lot of good ones are still out there—family-oriented, protective men and women who want to keep those closest to them safe. And at the end of the day, wolf packs really are about that—family—and wolf shifters are no different.

It’s only fair that those themes are a constant centerpiece of most of my wolf stories. And those of you that have read my work from the beginning know that. (Thank you for being with me so long, btw.)

  Lovable, Huggable, Deadly Bears

Bears were the second shifters I wrote. They first appeared in Bearllionaire, my most successful book at the time, and from the moment they walked onto the page, bears have been a major staple in the shifter world.

So what makes bears different? Like wolves, I wanted to reflect how bears are in the wild while adding my own spin. *On a side note, don’t ever look up too much info on bears. They’re actually horrible jerks in the wild.*

At their core, my shifter bears are generally fairly solitary. Aside from direct familial relations (like the brothers in the Bearstone Park series, Polar Heat series, or Trapped in Bear Canyon series), bears tend to stick to themselves. No packs. No social structure. Generally, it just comes down to who is the biggest, baddest bear.

Because of this, bears often like to live up in the mountains or secluded places where they can have lots of space to themselves. Like wolves, they also have the strict rule of never revealing their identity to humans (with only one exception), but this rule is generally enforced by the Tribunal on bears as well.

Because they often live in the middle of nowhere, many bear shifters have lived most or all of their lives in bear form (unlike most other shifter types). This often has led to familial strife or confusing parent-child relationships, as many bear children have grown into accomplished humans with successful lives while having rocky rela
tionships with their cheating or wandering parents (like the Bear Haven or Trapped in Bear Canyon series).

This has led to many bears forming their own special families. Club Crimson (Run by Benny, a bear) was made for lone shifters to unite, while bears like Zeus (Big Bad Bear) and Garrett (Built Fur Love) have made their closest friends and compatriots their family instead. These bears are fiercely protective of those they love, especially their mates.

Like wolves, bears can mate with both humans and other shifters. And because bears are solitary and rarer in general than wolves, many bear shifters have found their mates in regular human women (Bearllionaire, Bearthlete, Bear-Ever Yours) where others have mated other bears (Bearlebrity, Some Bear to Love). After all, when love hits, why question it? The difference is that when a bear mates a human, she must see her mate’s shifted form (i.e. his/her bear) before mating. Sometimes this is intentional, sometimes accidental. But either way, it unifies the couple and puts them both on the same page before committing to forever with each other.

Unlike wolves, bears don’t have alpha powers. Instead, they’re just really big and really strong. In fact, bear shifters are often much larger than bears in the wild, possessing incredible power when shifted.

Also, there are multiple kinds of bear shifters that have been spotted over the years. And while most of my heroes are grizzly bears (the biggest and baddest and strongest), there have been kodiak, black, polar, and other types of bears all along the way.

Pet at Your Own Risk: Big Cats

Thus far, I haven’t written a lot of big cat books, even if they’re some of my favorite stories. And those who have read them probably already know that they’re fairly unique in shifter society for several big reasons. Each species often has its own special quirks or powers as well.
