Project Death: Resurrection

I woke to the familiar tinkling. Another charge was in danger, and the time for resting was over. With a groan I sat up, made sure I had my things, and headed out to my charge, closing my eyes and reaching out, finding the pull of a charge in need and thinking of going to him or her. In my still tired state I couldn’t quite get the feel for exactly who needed me. I felt myself leave the Resurrector facility and travel quickly without being seen to where my charge awaited.

However, when I arrived on scene I looked around to see no one. I was standing in the middle of an empty field, surrounded by nothing but dying grass in a place that should have still been a bright, green, flowery meadow. Instead it was all yellow-brown and everything looked dry. My surroundings felt like death. This was strange. I had never been called to help a charge where there was no charge. I looked around again; maybe I was missing something.

"Hello?" I called out, hoping I would be heard and then answered. If there was someone there then I was going to find them. There was no way I was going to lose anyone. I had always kept high standards for myself and I wasn't about to start slacking now, especially with the chaos occurring back at Resurrector facilities.

"So it actually worked?" asked a voice from behind me. I whipped around and gasped at the sight before me. He was there, looking just as he had five years ago, just as he had in the dreams I had had of him.

It was the other man, the one from the mall who had been with the Angel of Death, or at least it seemed that way. I'd remember his gaze and his face anywhere. They were engraved in my mind, even if I never spoke of him to anyone. Honestly who would believe me about any of it anyway? That a chance encounter in a mall had led to my many nights of dreaming about him seemed so far-fetched and yet I knew it to be truth. I couldn't help but stare. His black hair was standing up in well managed spikes, and his dark clothes were immaculately pressed and designed to fit him perfectly. In some ways he looked like a model but then again, he had an air of power to him that seemed to set him off from anyone normal.

Also, most people didn't tend to really look at us Resurrectors. Sure they could see us and they would remember someone being around but for the most part no one ever really got a good look at us. It was like some sort of magic force, well not really magic, but some power similar to it. A human's idea of what we looked like and what exactly we did always turned out to be rather fuzzy which was why they never actually spent the time to look at us. But he, my mysterious man in black, was looking right at me.

"That is good to know. It will make things easier…for me." Somehow I hadn’t expected even his voice to sound so pleasing. Because he looked so perfect I expected him to be flawed deeply in some other way, like having a high pitched voice or no voice at all. Instead it was rich and had only a few truly deep tones to it.

I stared at him, unable to say anything. It wasn't like when I faced the Angel of Death. This guy didn't even need to do anything to keep me frozen to my spot. I had no idea how this was happening. The Angel of Death had waved his hand and that was what made me freeze, but this guy hadn't moved. He was still just standing there as if he had just won some battle in a war or something. And maybe he had. If he worked with the Angel of Death then he was involved in a never-ending war with the Resurrectors.

He laughed, a sound that echoed across the field and sent shivers down my spine. "There is no need to be afraid, Resurrector. You are not the one I am after, yet."

Who was this guy and why was affecting me like this? What was going on? Did I not actually have a charge here? There were too many questions and too few answers. I didn't like it at all. Still I could not bring myself to ask him anything.

His smile disappeared as he glanced around, almost as if sensing that he needed to be somewhere else. "Then that settles that." He looked over and his dark blue eyes pierced through me. It felt like I had just touched an electric fence and the shock rippled through my body before disappearing into the ground. "I will see you again soon, Resurrector."

Turning he began to walk away and disappeared in a swirling dark mist that reminded me of the scene in Pocahontas—the animated Disney one—where she and John Smith were surrounded by that swirly wind. Well, whoever he was, I had to admit that he had style, especially with that swirling effect. Most would just disappear in a cloud of smoke but not him.

I found that I stood there for several minutes before I was able to move again. I took several deep breaths, trying to steady myself before I returned to the Resurrector facilities with a thought.

Something was definitely going on around here and we needed to figure it out before it was too late.
