Shattered Hart: Hart Pursuit Trilogy Book 2

“You’re married,” I whispered. “Fucking married.”
“I am not.” He gritted his teeth. I yanked my hands away when he tried to touch me.
“Canson says you are.”
“She died, Syd. It was years ago. And I was going to tell you. I swear. I wanted to come clean about everything. About what I’ve been doing for five years. About those years with Farrah.”
I couldn’t sit. I shoved off the mattress. “How do I know that?” It was weird, but I wanted the picture of her again. I wanted to look at her. To see the woman AJ had actually pledged his life to. Had he proposed on a rooftop? Did they have a big wedding? How many carats was the ring? Oh shit.
I turned around. “Do you have kids? Did you have a baby with her? Tell me, AJ, are you a father?” It was an answer that could sever us permanently.
AJ shook his head. “No. No kids.” I wasn’t sure what prompted the sad expression on his face. Was it witnessing me unravel? Was it remembering his wife?
It was the first time in twenty minutes I felt any relief, though it wasn’t much. The world was filled with gloom. Hackers. Stalkers. Liars. Thieves. Now there were dead wives.
“You have to believe me. Agent Canson never should have brought out the pictures. He shouldn’t have dropped information like this.”
“The problem is I don’t know if you would have told me if he hadn’t.” Our eyes met and the impact almost ripped me in half.
“I promise I was going to tell you.”
I stuck my chin forward. “Do you have any proof?”
“The meeting I had. When I didn’t get back last night?”
I nodded. “Yes?”
“It was a meeting about Farrah.”
I blinked. “And?”
Canson banged on the bedroom door. AJ glared at the agent when he whipped the door open.
“Just seeing what’s happening in here. Everything ok?” He tried to poke his head past AJ’s giant frame.
“We’re talking.” AJ gritted his teeth. “Your report is going to have to wait, man.” He locked the door. He faced me. “I’m not going to answer that again. I swear.”
“Tell me about the meeting. What did they say? I want to know what your proof is. I want to believe you. I want to trust you, but you kept this. This huge part of your life. You kept it to yourself and hid it.”
He groaned. “For good reason, Syd.”
“You didn’t think I could handle it? You didn’t want to admit that someone else was wife material and I wasn’t?”
“God, no. That’s not it.” He shook his head.
“Because you did marry someone else.” I stared at him. “I thought we were going to get married when we lived in the townhouse. Even after you found out I was hacking. Even after the FBI cleared me. I still believed that you wanted to marry me.”
“I did.” He swallowed.
“But you married someone else.” I sank on the bed, feeling the weight of the news consume me. It would never be the same. We would never be the same. My heart was broken in an entirely new way.
“The information is shitty. I get that. But there’s an entirely new problem with Farrah we have to deal with.”
“Like what?”
“The thing is, I married Farrah for the agency. She’s an agent too. A double agent, Syd.”
The dark pit in my stomach curled into a tighter knot.
“We have new intelligence. The emergency meeting was about her.”
I had lost my patience a long time ago. “What is it?” I roared. “What is it about her?”
I’d never seen him so calm. “The agents in the field have spotted her. She’s not dead.”
