  Chapter One

  The need to get as far away as possible took Faolan Mackinnon far from his beloved Skye. He'd traveled for many days on a foolish idea that he’d leave the heartache behind. The woman he’d loved from afar for so long was to be his brother’s bride and there was naught he could do about it.

  As a second born son, he had no rights nor lands and because of it, his father, the laird Mackinnon, had betrothed Moira to his older brother Ewan. In Faolan’s heart, he was certain they’d not make a good match, but what could he do. He’d never do something foolish to bring dishonor to his family or disgrace to Moira.

  In a fortnight, the marriage would take place. He'd left prior to the hand fasting ceremony, unable to stomach being presen
t for it. Faolan road away with his guts churning and heart in pieces.

  The chill in the air told of winter’s fast approach. Faolan shivered despite the thick furs he wore. Somehow the frigid air managed to get through its icy tendrils penetrating to the bone.

  As he neared a small village south of Moy, it was late in the evening and his stomach grumbled in expectation of a hot meal. He reckoned a warm bed to follow would be quite nice as well. Mentally calculating the coin in his purse, Faolan decided it was worth it. He'd hire a room for the night and a stall in the stables for his horse.

  He eyed the small village. Perhaps he could remain there through the winter and return to Skye in the spring, his heart mended.

  At the stables, he dismounted and neared pulling his horse behind.

  "Tis a cold night stranger," the old man came out from his small enclosed quarters and motioned for him to follow into the stables. "Yer steed will have a warm bed for the night."

  "I thank ye," Faolan replied, glad to see the stables were clean and well maintained. Seeming to sense he’d be feed, his horse went into the stall without hesitation.

  The stable hand poured oats into a bucket and then hobbled to a corner and returned with another bucket of water. "Here ye go." The man seemed to forget Faolan’s presence.
