Then, the two kings were sent away to take care of business and she was left alone. The business was quite urgent and they needed to go at once, taking a few of their men along with them. They promised her that they would be back in a few weeks, with both of them saying how much they would miss her. She hadn’t known them for all that long but sometimes it felt as if she had known them forever. She knew that she would miss them too and longed for the weeks to go by quickly.

She had gotten word that the two of them would be making a decision soon and she knew that her time as a single woman was almost up. She was both saddened and excited by this prospect. It was going to be hard for her to give one of them up but she was happy that she was at least going to be marrying someone she cared deeply for.

Over the last few weeks she had gotten exceptionally close to both of them and her feelings had deepened to something that resembled love. Love and lust, she mused, who knew I would be experiencing both and who knew that I would have two men after me. While the kings were away she had a lot of time to think and contemplate her future.

Her parents were excited that both kings would be fighting over her and they had started treating her with incredible kindness, as if suddenly she was a fragile doll that could easily be broken. They walked on eggshells around her, desperate for her to finally marry into such a well-known and wealthy family. She had urged them not to tell anyone until it was final but they couldn’t help but tell their friends about their daughter and the kings. They were simply too proud.

While they were gone Caroline fell ill and with each passing day she experienced strange bouts of nausea, often followed by vomiting, and an extreme desire to sleep. She was put to bed and monitored as often as possible. One day she’d feel fine, and the next she’d feel sick, and some of the foods that she enjoyed suddenly smelled awful to her.

Finally, her mom called the nurse and asked her to check on Caroline to make sure she was okay. There had been a lot of illness in the area lately and they assumed that Caroline had simply caught one of the bugs, but they wanted to make sure. Now that she was betrothed to the kings they couldn’t take a chance of her staying sick for too long. The nurse came in, examined Caroline and then said,

“Caroline, my dear, I think you might be pregnant. Is that a possibility?” Caroline’s eyes widened in shock but then she nodded in reply. They did the test and it was confirmed that she was indeed pregnant. Both her mother and father were ecstatic, until the nurse said, “So who’s the lucky man?” and Caroline had bowed her head in shame and answered, “I’m not sure.” After that, they went silent.

And so, she waited for the kings to return, worried about their response and continuing to feel good on some days and ill on others. It was a rollercoaster of emotions as she thought about the predicament she had gotten herself into. She had never expected to find someone that she would want to marry let alone have their child. How funny life can be.

Finally, a few weeks after they had left, the kings returned as promised and she was sent to go see them. The whole way in the carriage she felt sick, but more from the idea of telling them what had happened them from actual nausea itself. When she arrived the two kings came out to meet her, both rushing forward to kiss her, but they stopped when they saw the look on her face. She went inside with them and then sat down, her face drained of all color.

“What’s wrong?” they both asked at once and she had burst into tears, not quite sure how to tell them. Finally, after she had managed to calm down she said, “Albert, Patrick. I’m pregnant. Also, I haven’t been with anyone else except the two of you. I am not sure yet who the baby belongs to but there is no doubt that it is either one of you.”

She expected tears, she expected arguments and perhaps some shouting. She had even expected them to kick her out and tell her to never come back. But instead what she got was hugs, kisses and congratulations. She was welcomed into the family so easily that it took her surprise. She was told not to worry, to relax and to keep calm. They told her that they loved her and that they would make it work no matter what happened. But as she sat there, looking from the one to the other, both faces as handsome as the next, she wondered who the baby belonged to.

She wondered, in fact, who she belonged to. She wondered if the other one would find a wife so easily and if she would get along with her. Would that lady be upset that Caroline had been with her man? Or would she want to join them to create a foursome? Her body tingled at the thought. But as she looked again at their faces she realized that she didn’t actually mind at all what happened as long as she could be with one of them. She touched her stomach, and smiled. Just a few weeks ago I was unhappy and upset with the world. Now not only am I in love with two beautiful men, but a little prince lives inside me, she thought to herself, oh how great life can be when you allow it to be.

Caroline had stopped crying. She looked at the two kings and knew that her adventure with them had only just begun.

  TEMPTATION TALES

  Story 39

“You know we’re not going to find an open shop at this hour, Dan.”

Daniel Jones clucked to the bay horse, encouraging a quicker trot and glance at his brother. “This is a semi-formal affair, Ethan. I need a cravat. And you’re going to buy it.”

  “Me?”

“It was your dog that chewed mine up.”

“Bloody mutt. I should shoot the damn thing.”

“It could be a good dog if you’d just discipline and train it.”

The buggy’s wheels bounced over ruts in the cobblestone street, the muggy mid-summer heat lingering even into the loaming. Both men sweated into their evening tails and waistcoats, and Dan groused about arriving at the party rumpled. In spite of the late hour, wagons and carriages filled the city’s streets and he was forced to slow the horse when it came upon a slow moving wagon with no room to go around. He muttered a curse.

“Look,” Ethan said, pointing. “There. A clothiers shop with lights still burning. You’re in luck, brother.”

Dan guided the horse to the curb and reined in. Jumping from the buggy, he narrowly missed stepping into a pile of pig shit. Tying the horse’s reins to the ring, he straightened his waistcoat and top hat. Followed by Ethan, he opened the door, hearing the musical tinkle of the bell announcing their presence. The shop keeper, a bald, pudgy man with a short mustache and a bad-tempered expression on his face glanced up from behind the counter.

“Sorry, gentlemen, I’m about to close for the night.”

“Excuse us, good fellow,” Dan said, an ingratiating smile on his lips, “but I am in dire need of a cravat. Silk, if you have it. We’ll pay you double for the inconvenience.”

Ethan jerked his head around to stare at his brother. “What?”

  Dan ignored him.

The shop keeper sighed down his nose. “Very well. The cravats are over there. Be quick about it, however. I must lock up.”

Dan and Ethan found the cravats on a shelf near ties and suits on mannequins. Dan picked out a silver-grey piece made of silk. “This one is very nice, I think. Don’t you agree, brother?”

“Double? Really? Aren’t you pushing this destructive dog thing too far?”

  Dan raised his brow. “Naturally.”

Taking the silk to the counter, Ethan digging into coat pocket for his wallet. He winced when the shop keeper named his price, but handed over the amount demanded. As he put his wallet back, he noticed a girl peeking out from behind the curtain that divided the shop from the back office and storeroom. He nudged Dan. Following his gaze, Dan saw her, too, and smiled. The girl smiled back. From what Ethan could see of her, she was pretty, with long wheat-gold hair, a sprinkling of freckles over her nose and white, even teeth. Many beautiful women and girls appeared so until they smiled, and revealed blackened rot in their mouths. Ethan lifted his hand and beckoned.

She stepped forward, into view, and Ethan stopped himself from whistlin
g. Her body in a tight bodice and skirt was so slender he wagered he could fit both hands around her tiny waist. Her perky breasts strained under the laces, and he imagined that when freed they’d overflow his hands. Her hazel-green eyes framed with dark, sooty lashes peeped up at him as she joined her father at the counter.

“Lacey, what are you doing here?” the man snapped. “Have you finished with the books?”

  “Yes, Papa.”

To Ethan, her voice sounded melodic. He removed his top hat, Dan imitating him, and offered her a courtly bow. “What a lovely creature you are, miss.”

She smiled, dropping into a small curtsey. “Thank you, kind sir.”

Enchanted, Ethan spoke without truly thinking. “We, my brother and I, are on our way to the country for a party. Would you care to join us?”

Her father’s face darkened and he closed his till with a sharp bang. “Of course she will not. How dare you presume to escort my daughter anywhere without proper introductions or chaperones.”

Ethan flushed, and Dan scowled. “My apologies, good merchant. Your daughter is so beautiful and we would enjoy her company. We mean no harm.”

The girl smiled, and her green eyes took on a mischievous glint. Had her father seen it, Ethan guessed, he would not take kindly to it. She glanced from her father’s stout back to Ethan, and dipped her chin in a quick nod. Sending her a rapid-fire wink to show her he understood, Ethan cleared his throat.

“Then we will be on our way,” he said, elbowing Dan, who still stood gawking at Lacey. “Thank you, good sir. Miss.”

Putting his hat back on, he led his brother back out the shop’s door and to their carriage. As the proprietor came behind them and locked the door, shuttering the door’s window, Ethan said, “Let’s drive around the corner and wait.”

Tying his cravat, Dan lifted his brow. “Wait? For what?”

“Lacey wants to come with us regardless of what Papa said.”

  “Indeed?”

Untying the horse, Ethan and his brother climbed back into the buggy. Some of the city’s horse and foot traffic had died away, leaving them able to maneuver the horse into the street and around the corner. Reining in again, now immersed in darkness, away from the lit street lamps, Dan turned to his brother.

“Why is it so important that she come? We’re going to be late as it is.”

Ethan grinned. “Because, dear brother, I think she might be inclined to entertain the two of us.”

Dan’s jaw dropped. “Ethan, she’s not a whore. You can’t just expect her to get naked for two strange men.”

“If she says no, then she says no,” Ethan answered, his head turned to watch for Lacey. “We’ll dance with her, show her a good time. Then we’ll return her to her father’s shop and no one will be the wiser.”

  “This is still wrong.”

“How? She’s of age, she’s coming with us of her own free will. Just because I hope to get some tail tonight, doesn’t mean I will abuse her trust.”

“What makes you think she’ll as you say – get naked for us?”

A shadow moved, startling the horse into a toss of its head, then glided to the buggy. As she drew into the light of the buggy’s twin lamps, Ethan saw she had donned a light cloak with a deep hood. He climbed down, then assisted Lacey into the buggy to sit between them.

“I must be back by dawn,” she said. “I told my parents I was going to bed, and they don’t check on me anymore.”

Dan clucked to the horse, guiding it down the street and back to the main thoroughfare. “Hello, I’m Dan. This is my brother, Ethan.”

“Pleasure to meet you,” she replied, flipping back her hood. “I’m Lacey.”

Ethan plucked her hand from her lap to kiss it. “We are honored you decided to accompany us.”

“Why did you?” Dan asked, glancing down at her. “You could get into trouble with your father.”

She shrugged. “They never let me do anything. Boys from school have asked me to dances and Papa always tells them no. I’m old enough to be married, and Papa aims to get me married off to a boring old man. Just once, I want to see a party and dance.”

“I’m glad we were able to fulfill your wishes, Lacey,” Ethan said, grinning.

“Are parties wonderful?” she asked, her voice now wistful. “From stories and pictures, they seem almost like a fantasy.”

“Yes, they are indeed,” Ethan answered. “The lights, the music, the beautiful people. Like you.”

“Of course, I must admit that being asked to a party by two obviously wealthy and handsome young men, how could I not say yes?”

Dan chuckled. “Believe me, we will be the envy of everyone there.”

The lights and the noise of the city fell past them. The horse’s hooves clopped from the cobbled street to the dirt of a country road. They passed houses and small farms, lights gleaming from windows. Patches of forestland surrounded them, and Ethan interpreted Lacey’s round eyes.

“You’ve never been out of the city, Lacey?”

“No, never. Papa took me to the harbor once. It stank, and there were all kinds of white birds flying around. The noise they created made me sad.”

  “Seagulls,” Dan said.

“Yes, that’s what Papa called them. Where is this party?”

“A friend’s country estate,” Ethan told her. “It’s only a mile or so further down this road. We’ll be there shortly.”

“Will there be food? I’m hungry.”

“Yes, ma’am. Our friend sets an amazing table.”

The buggy suddenly lurched, tossing Lacey into Ethan’s lap as Dan struggled to not slide over her. The horse kept trotting, but the left front wheel of the buggy parted from it. The rear wheel rolled over it, and the axle dragged the ground. Dan reined the horse in to a quick stop, calling, ‘whoa’ before more damage could be done.

“What the hell?” he asked, jumping down.

Taking one of the lanterns, he held it over the damaged wheel. “Bloody hell,” he cursed. “We can’t fix that.”

Ethan leaped down. “Watch your language with a lady present. You’re right, fixing this will take a wheelwright. So now what do we do?”

“We can walk the rest of the way,” Dan said, “but we can’t ask Lacey to walk the mile there. Nor can we leave her to stay here by herself.”

“Then you walk for help while I entertain Miss Lacey.”

“No, sir. Either we all go or we all stay. Surely someone will come along and we can hitch a ride.”

Ethan helped Lacey down from the seat. She brushed her skirts straight with her hands, gazing at each of them. “Perhaps we should get the buggy off the road.”

“Good idea,” Ethan said. “Take the bridle and lead the horse to that wide spot up there. Dan and I will lift the buggy to keep the axle from dragging and breaking.”

As the brothers lifted, Lacey clucked to the horse and got it walking forward. Grunting with the strain, Ethan and Dan lifted the axle and stepped alongside the buggy as it rolled forward. Lacey guided the horse to a cleared area among the trees, and stopped it, stroking its neck. The brothers let the axle down gently, puffing from the effort.

“May as well unhitch the poor beast.” Ethan joined Lacey and began to unfasten buckles as Dan walked back down the road for the wheel. Once the horse stood free of the shaft, Ethan tied it to a tree by the reins. Dan brought both lanterns with him as Ethan found an ancient log just inside the trees when they might sit reasonably comfortably.

Ethan lightly touched Lacey’s hand. “I’m sorry about this, Lacey. Now we’re all missing the party.”

She smiled. “It’s still nice to be away from home with handsome men.”

Ethan shot a quick glance at his brother, who set the lamps on the ground where they might illuminate the area. He sat down beside her, opposite Ethan, and took her hand. “Thank you for placing your trust in us.”

“I know you won’t hurt me.”

Ethan plucked her other hand from her lap.
Even if we said we wanted you?”

Lacey cocked her head, looking at him in confusion. “Wanted me?”

“As in, you know, your body.”

“Oh, I see. You want to do that thing that makes babies.”

Dan chuckled. “Yes, ma’am, that about sums it up.”

Ethan gazed at her, his eyes intent. “Lacey, the choice is yours. We would never force you.”

“If you want to do this, Lacey,” Dan added, “it could be fun. If you say no, then no it is and we will sit here and play twenty questions.”

Lacey nibbled her lip and she gazed at first one and then the other. “My choice? I can say no?”

  “Yes, to both questions.”

She nibbled her lip some more, then smiled. “Yes. I want to.”

His hands on her shoulders, Ethan turned her to face him. “Are you sure, Lacey? You must be one hundred present positive that you want this.”

“I am. I once saw my parents doing it. Papa was on Mama and pushing his thing into her and grunting. It made me tingly down there.”

She dropped her eyes toward her lap, and then they bounced back up, mischievous. “I don’t think I can make a baby right now. Its not my time of the month.”

“Just to be sure, we will pull out of you before we come,” Dan said.

“Brother, there are winter rugs in the buggy,” Ethan said, standing and taking Lacey up with him. “Perhaps we might have something to lie on.”

As Dan nodded and walked over to the carriage, Ethan untied the ribbons holding her cloak to her shoulders, and dropped it over the log. Lacey turned her back to him, sweeping her hair to the side as he unlaced her bodice. Inside his trousers, his cock swelled, beginning its familiar ache and need to be sheathed inside a woman’s body. Dan returned and spread the rugs over the dead leaves, twigs and dirt, then stood in front of Lacey to help her step out of her clothes.
