“You did, huh?” Deke smirked. “I was just talking to her a few days ago and she didn’t say a word.”
“That’s because she was sworn to secrecy!” She laughed, feeling some of her tension melt away. It was going to be okay. He’d be good with her surprise, she just knew it.
“Okay, now I’m really curious.” He tipped his head, studying her. “Will you show me already?”
She’d had the tattoo a few days and keeping Deke from seeing it had been a challenge, since it was just above her bikini line, but she’d been careful because she didn’t want anything to ruin this moment for him.
Leading him into her small office, she said, “We need a little privacy for this.” She unbuttoned her black pants and took a deep breath, revealing the stunning creation his friends had worked on.
His eyes narrowed, then widened. “What the…?” He leaned in to get a closer look, his breath catching in his throat. “A baby?”
The tears spilled down her cheeks as she nodded. “Nate said you can finish filling it in with more details after the baby’s born, and the date of birth and name, but I just wanted—”
“We’re going to have a baby?” His voice was raw as he brushed the tears off her cheeks with his thumbs. “Seriously?”
“Seriously.” It hadn’t been planned, but she’d been thrilled when the doctor confirmed it last week. The hard part had been keeping it from Deke and planning the perfect way to share the news with him. “Are you okay with it? I mean I know we talked about waiting until—”
“I can’t believe this is happening, Harper.” He curled his hand around her neck and drew her in close. “A baby. We’re going to have a baby.”
She wrapped her arms around his huge biceps, still holding her breath. “And that’s a good thing, right?”
“Only the best thing that’s ever happened to me. Aside from you.”
She released the breath and rolled forward on her toes to wrap her arms around his neck. “Seven more months and you’re going to be a daddy.” It would mean her wedding gown would need some serious alterations, but that would be a small price to pay.
“I can’t even…”
Seeing Deke speechless was a rare thing, but she loved that he seemed as overwhelmed as she’d been when the doctor confirmed her suspicions. “It’s finally happening,” she whispered in his ear. “The life we’d always dreamed about.”
“You girl…” He locked eyes with her. “You’re the reason all my dreams came true. And I’m never gonna let you forget it.”
