“Let’s pray,” Chase said, bowing his head

“I’m here!” The loud sound of the front door banging had everyone craning to see down the hall.

“Marissa, is that you?” Mrs. Brighton spoke.

A tall thin girl with dark hair and a bright smile stepped into the kitchen.

“Just in time for grub,” Michelle teased, jumping down and hugging her sister tight.

“Sit next to me dear,” Mrs. Wade offered. “We’ll eat in a moment.”

Michelle settled back on to her stool, took Kade’s hand and bowed her head. She had never believed she could be so happy, so free. Her heart, her home, her hope was full of love and thanks.

“Give thanks to the Lord for he is good.” He truly was good.

  Epilogue

Spring reached out and grasped the hills of the Broken J Ranch in emerald gloves. Green and gold painted the fields and new life began to appear.

“Kade! Kade!” Michelle called excitedly. “Come quick.”

Kade Ballard pounded down the stairs, his boot heels a rapid staccato. “What’s wrong?” His voice was worried.

“Look,” she called, pointing out the window.

“What?” Kade crowded into the window and peered around the curtain.

“It’s a baby horse.” Michelle bounced on her toes.

“A foal,” Kade chuckled, laying an arm over her shoulders.

“Is that a boy or a girl?”

  “Either, let’s go find out.”

Together they headed out to the field where a leggy bay mare nibbled at the new shoots of grass. Next to her, a nearly black foal wobbled on spindly legs.

  “He’s precious,” Michelle bubbled.

“It’s a colt alright,” Kade agreed, examining the newcomer. “We’ll be seeing a few more of those soon enough.”

  “Will you help train him?”

“I might, depends on what Chase wants. He’s got some steady ranch hands now, and brings in extras when we’re busy. If he needs me, he’ll ask.”

“I guess we’ll be kinda busy then.”

“You’re shops all up and running now, your clients clamoring for more of your work, and you have at least fifty authors who are regulars.”

“I’m thinking of hiring an assistant,” Michelle agreed, leaning on the fence and watching the colt caper a few steps sideways. “Someone who can keep the calendar, organize schedules, answer calls.”

“If you think you’ll need it, that’s a great idea,” Kade encouraged.

“I’d like to do a few things around the house as well,” Michelle continued.

“Yeah?” Kade grinned happily. He loved how the Broken J had become her home.

“You know that little room behind our room?”

Kade blinked at her, surprised she’d want to start there and not downstairs.

“I’m not sure what colors would be best yet, but I like natural wood for a crib.”

Kade turned very slowly toward his wife, who stood grinning at him.

“Crib?” Kade blinked, trying to let the word work its way into his brain.

“You know one of those little beds you put babies in.” Michelle’s smile was brighter now.

  “You, we.” Kade babbled.

“Yes, you, me, we. That’s the way it goes.”

Kade threw his hat in the air with a yell, then grabbed Michelle, spinning her around. “A baby.” He laughed, stopping and kissing her soundly.

“A baby.” Michelle laughed, tears of joy streaming down her face.

“I don’t know what to say,” Kade said. Fear, worry, joy, rolling through him.

“I guess this is another new start,” Michelle said.

“I love new,” Kade said softly.

“I love you, Kadence,” Michelle replied, laughing at his groan.

“Are you ever going to stop calling me that?” Kade asked, still holding her tight.

“No, I like it. I came into your life with no plan, no real idea of how we’d click. I only knew that you wanted a wife. Now we march in step, one heart beating to the same rhythm.”

Kade laughed.“So you’re counting Kadence are you?”

“I am, dear husband.” She laid her hand on his heart, feeling the steady beat. “We’re joined together and I’ll love you for always.”

“We’ll just take it one step at a time,” Kade answered, leaning in and kissing the woman God had brought him.
