A Darker Place

‘Sounds good.’ Kay caught Laura’s eye and waved her over. ‘Do you want to join us? You haven’t had a chance to have a proper catch up with everyone since you started.’

‘That’d be great, guv – thanks,’ Laura beamed. ‘Anything I can bring?’

‘Yes,’ said Barnes. ‘Sticky plasters. The guv might be a great detective, but she’s a bloody hazard with a knife.’

Kay yawned while she locked her car and then crossed the gravel driveway to her front door.

It opened before she could put her key in the lock, and Adam greeted her with a kiss and a steaming mug of coffee.

‘I took the day off,’ he said, ushering her into the living room. ‘I figured you’d need to rest after the past week, and I’ve got a deadline for a journal article so we can relax.’

‘Sounds perfect.’ Kay sank onto the sofa, toed off her shoes and rubbed her feet, her eyelids dry from lack of sleep. ‘I think I’m going to have this, then have a shower and sleep. I’ve invited the others over for a barbecue later – I thought it’d be a good idea to let off some steam.’

‘Good idea. I’ll go and get some steaks and things this afternoon.’

Kay took another sip of coffee, and then sat upright. ‘Where are the kittens?’

‘The bloke from the Cats Protection League turned up last night to collect them – he reckons he might have them all rehomed within a fortnight.’

  ‘That’s good.’

‘You sounded a bit disappointed,’ he said, dropping onto the sofa beside her.

‘I was sort of getting used to having them around.’

‘Well, if you think you’re going to be lonely and you want some company while I’m up in London for that conference next week, you could always babysit Sid the snake. His owner’s off to Florida for a couple of weeks.’

Kay narrowed her eyes at him.

‘Very funny, Turner. Carry on like that, you’ll regret it.’

He laughed, draped his arm around her, and then winked.

  ‘Is that a dare?’
