Slipping potions into someone’s drink was strictly forbidden within Mistyx, so Styx waved over Wolfe who happened to be standing nearby. Once the Vampire was in front of the counter, Styx said, “Go grab Jasmine for me and bring her back here. She and I need to talk. Stay close. I might need your skills to get answers to a few questions.”

Wolfe did as asked and, once the guilty party was standing in front of the bar, Styx asked, “What potion did you use and who did you give it to?”

Acting innocent, Jasmine replied, “I have no idea what you’re talking about.”

Styx nodded to Wolfe and asked, “Would you be so kind to ask her the same questions?”

Wolfe spun Jasmine so that she was facing him and locked his intense eyes on hers. He used his Vampire skills to make her more receptive to giving honest answers.

Her mind went fuzzy for a moment and, without being able to stop herself, she blurted out, “I bought Love Potion Number 9 from a gypsy’s shop on 34th and Vine. It claims to make the Vampire that drinks it hornier than hell for several hours and it cost me a fortune.”

Wolfe asked, “Whose drink did you slip it into?”

Jasmine was going to lie and say that someone bumped into her earlier and broke her little bottle, but her mouth opened and said, “Devin.” In an attempt to lessen her punishment, she added of her own free will, “I just dropped off the drink at his table a few minutes ago so, odds are, he hasn’t touched it yet.”

Back at the fireplace, Devin placed into Nikki’s palm the final agreed to amount of chicken that she needed to eat. She took it gingerly into her fingers and held it to her mouth. After taking in a deep breath, she pinched her nose shut with one hand, while the other popped the meat into her open mouth.

This time when she chewed, the flame instantly filled her mouth and she tried to douse the heat with a glass of water. When it actually seemed to make the burning sensation worse, Devin quickly handed her the glass that was sitting in front of him. He said with a snicker, “Drink this.”

Although Nikki knew that the glass most likely contained a large amount of alcohol, the inferno inside her forced her to consider the offered beverage. She accepted the drink and quickly yanked the glass from Devin’s hand.

Now that Styx had his answers, he glanced over at Devin’s table. Nikki always drank a tall glass of orange juice or a Rose Absinthe so, when he saw her with a bar glass at her mouth, he jumped over the bar counter, yelling “Switch, stop Nikki!”

A branch from Switch instantly yanked the glass from Nikki’s hand. Devin assumed that Switch was trying to stop Nikki from drinking alcohol so, at first, he laughed at the tree’s protectiveness.

As soon as Styx reached their table, Nikki asked while frantically fanning herself, “Styx, what did you put in this chicken? I’m really burning up inside.”

As Nikki started to pant, Styx quickly took the empty glass from the branch and, after sniffing the contents, he asked Devin urgently, “Did Nikki drink all of this?”

  Devin replied, “Yes, why?”

Before Styx could answer, Nikki gasped. As a new wave of heat washed over her body, she closed her eyes with a moan and her spots started to glow a neon shade of blue.

Devin reached out to Nikki and asked with concern, “Are you alright?” When she started to sway and seemed lost in some kind of trance, Devin turned to Styx and asked, “What’s going on?”

Styx said, “Nikki just drank Jasmine’s Vampire love potion that was meant for you.”

Devin jumped to his feet and yelled, “What?”

Before he had a chance to hunt down the guilty party, a sparkling haze began to appear around Nikki. Everyone watched helplessly as the haze became a wispy fog and began to creep away from her body in all directions like the tentacles of an octopus. Smoke-like arms snaked through the air as if they were searching for someone. It caressed and swirled up the body of anyone it came near, making them gasp and then her captive let out a moan. When the fog decided that the person was not the one it wanted, it released its hold. Although the captive was knocked to the floor, they continued to sway and began to stare at Nikki with pure love in their eyes.

When the mist found Devin, it swirled around his body as if it was sniffing his scent. Suddenly Nikki’s eyes shot open and she locked her gaze on her latest captive. She gave Devin a crooked smile and said in an almost musical voice, “There you are.” She then blew a stream of Pixie dust at him.

The dust penetrated his chest like a spear, making him stagger backwards. As he righted himself, he felt an inner burn that made his heart start to pound and his breath come out in pants. Outside of Devin’s control, he let out a low predatory growl. Nikki smiled. She liked the sound and her wings began to flutter in blinding speed, lifting her out of her chair. As she hovered above the table, she motioned to Devin and whispered seductively, “Come here, Vampire.”

As if the Pixie dust was a rope tied around his heart, Devin was pulled forward toward the one whose magic was caressing every inch of his body. He knew he couldn’t act on the thoughts that were filling his mind, so he desperately tried to resist her draw.

Although Nikki was solely focused on Devin, her magical wave of seduction inadvertently caressed anyone that had been touched by the mist. The smitten were now on their feet and their glassy, unfocused eyes were locked on the Pixie. Wolfe was counted among that number and he could feel his inner hunter being seduced to come forward. Knowing that in moments he was soon going to become lethally dangerous to anyone that came between him and the one that was inadvertently calling him, he let out an angry roar. To his relief it broke the connection just long enough for him to use his Vampire gifts and race out of the bar in a blur of speed.

Finally realizing what she was doing, Nikki started to fight the magic. While she squirmed and twisted, her body began to fill with her caged desires. Then, as if she could contain it no more, she threw her head back. She cried out and a burst of purple Pixie dust exploded out of her body like Fourth of July fireworks and each minute sparkle penetrated into the skin of anyone caught in its path.

Thinking fast, Styx ducked behind another victim of Nikki’s magic and narrowly avoided the Pixie induced meteor shower. Wasting no time, Styx yanked Devin backwards and yelled, “Switch, cage!”

As the crowd let out a combined cry and sprang forward, massive branches flew through the air. They shot into the floor and blocked Nikki from a horde of love-crazed men lunging in her direction with Alec leading the charge.
