  Chapter Thirty-Nine

  Ben

I hoped tonight was the night. I was prepared for whatever it was she planned for us. Hell, I was ready to eat dinner and watch a little television if that’s what Alison wanted. What I wasn’t prepared for was the sight of my future wife wearing the sexiest fucking negligee I’d ever seen.

When she opened the door, I did the only thing I could. I became instantly hard, threw down the expensive bouquet of flowers I’d bought to romance her, picked her up, and took her to bed. I’m not sorry, and from her reaction, she’s not sorry either.

  “You’re so fucking sexy, honey.”

  “So are you, baby.”

She called me “baby.” Holy fuck, that’s hot. I never want her to call me anything else.

She’s wrapped in my arms before I even utter a word. I run my palms up her back down to her ass; the softness of the nightie feels perfect. But not as perfect has her skin. Slipping my hand beneath the bottom edge of her gown, I slowly push it up. I want to give her time to stop me if she’s not ready for this. Instead of stopping, she helps me. I watch her lift the blue silk up her thighs and past her hips, revealing her trimmed dark curls. Only getting a glimpse of her pussy is enough to have me leaking from the head of my cock.

I’m mesmerized as the fabric slides over her soft belly and past her tits. My God. Her tits. I’ve dreamed about them. Fantasized about them. Imagined what they’d feel like in my hands, how her peaks would taste.

I don’t wait. Sliding my right hand around her waist, I lean down and I lick, I nibble, I suckle. The sounds she’s making are burning me up, making me crazy. I move to the other side and repeat, using my hand on the lonely one, squeezing and plucking at the nipple still wet from my tongue.

  “Oh, Ben….”

More encouraging words have never been spoken. Rolling her back, I slide between her legs and kiss her. I know she feels me. Hell, I can feel how wet she is; it’s on me now. The feeling makes me crazed, urgent.

“I need to be inside you, Ali.”

“Yes.” She moans. “I’m on birth control. I’m clean. You?”

“So fucking clean.” Positioning myself at her entrance, I press in slowly. It’s killing me because all I want to do is slam inside her over and over and over again. I can’t do that to her. Not right now. Until I know what she likes, I need to do this right.

Seated completely inside her, I stop to catch my breath. I look down at her and see a smile that I’ll never forget. When she starts to giggle, I return the smile. “Happy?”

“So happy.” She giggles again, but that stops the second I pull almost all the way out and press in, this time a little faster.

“So fucking happy.” Her voice is deep and husky.

  “You feel like heaven, sweetheart.”

“So do you. I knew you’d feel this good.”

Out and in again, and I pause. It’s amazing being deep inside her. I can feel her walls squeezing my cock and it’s… it’s spectacular.

  “I love you, Alison.”

I don’t expect to hear a reply. She told me months ago that it was going to take time, and I get that. So when she says, “I love you too, Ben,” hell, I want to jump up and down and scream. I want to shout so loud the entire city hears me. But not right now. No, right now, I need to make my woman come.

  And come she does. Twice.

And three more times later that night.

And once again first thing the next morning.

What can I say? We had a good night.

  Six Months Later

I’m in love. And not just with Ben. Yes, I’m in love with Ben, but also Sky along with our new little rescue friend, Blue. She’s the sweetest little black-and-white pup with the bluest eyes I’ve ever seen. Correction: they’re not the bluest. That distinction goes to Ben.

The last six months have felt like something from a fairy tale. After our first official night together, we spent every night after together as well. Every single one. That was why, about a month later, we decided to find a place for all of us. With our combined incomes, we were able to find something larger with a real bedroom. One with a door and everything. Our place even has a bathtub, something I haven’t had in years. It’s bliss spending a little time soaking in a tub with a candle burning and a glass of wine nearby. Ben doesn’t like the baths, per se, though he does like to watch me take them. He likes it a lot.

He likes a lot of things about me, and I feel the same about him. No, he’s not perfect, and we all know I’m definitely not, but it’s our imperfections that make us perfect for each other. We’ve talked a lot about our dreams and goals. We both want kids—soon. A move to Jersey is something we’ve contemplated. Several Saturdays have been spent viewing open houses in places like Hoboken and the more affordable North Caldwell. We aren’t ready to pull that trigger just yet, or at least I’m not. I’m pretty sure Ben would have put an offer on any house I liked. He’s that ready to move to the next phase. But I’m going to tell you a secret. While I’m also ready, I’m not going to do it until we’re at the next phase. And that phase is marriage. I never thought I’d be that traditional about a relationship. I never have been before. But it’s Ben. I want all of him. I want to know he’s in it for the long haul.

I’m not worried, though. I know he wants the same. Actually, I’m positive. Because right now, my man, my Ben, has just appeared in front of me and gotten down on one knee. Right in front of me and everyone else in our favorite coffee shop.

“Ali,” he says loud enough for other patrons to hear. I don’t care. He could yell to the rafters as far as I’m concerned.

“Yes?” Oh crap. The tears are coming.

“I love you. You’re my hero, my sexy savior. You rescued me from that crazy driver…”

Speaking of crazy drivers, Sam made it through rehab with fly colors. He did so well that he’s working at the facility as an aide. How do I know this? Well, immediately after he was discharged, he showed up at MFH and, one by one, apologized to everyone, saving Ben for last. It was the closure Ben needed, I think. Plus, Sam finally explained why he hated Ben so much. Apparently, his ex-wife ended up with a new man, one who was a lot younger than Sam and who, apparently, looked a lot like Ben.

“…as well as saved me from a life of loneliness and despair.”

Oh, now he’s making me laugh. “Uh-huh,” I say with a sniffle. “Sure.”

“You did.” He scoots a little closer and brings the small black box he’s holding between us. “I love you. Move to Jersey with me. Have kids with me. Make me the happiest guy in the world. Marry me.”

I lunge for him, wrapping my arms around his neck. “Yes,” I whisper in his ear. “I love you so much. Yes.”

Leaning back, he yells, “She said yes!”

When the small crowd in the shop claps and cheers, I allow my tears to fall, never letting go of the best man I’ve ever known. My sexy savior, Ben Schilling.

Isabelle "Izzy" Harmon is home again. Literally. After landing her first teaching gig, Izzy has found herself sleeping in her old room on an ancient twin bed that squeaks whenever she moves. Sure, she loves Honeywell, Iowa but part of her wanted to move to civilization rather than return to her old life after graduating from college. Farm life is in her blood but so is the man who lives next door. It’s too bad he never saw her as more than his best friend’s little sister.

It’s true what they say… distance makes the heart grow fonder and four years away did nothing to quell the way Izzy’s heart rate doubles whenever he's nearby. She hoped to get over it, but things don't always work out the way we hope.

Nashville "Nash" Watson never left. His goal of playing baseball in the majors flew out the window the second he found out he was going to be a father. No regrets, though, because Nash figured he'd return to Honeywell, I
owa to farm his family's land. It was the only thing he knew for sure. Well, that and he's never falling for another woman again. Ever.

  Never say never, Nash.

  Acknowledgments

There are alway so many people to thank at the end of each book. Like children, it often takes a village to get a story out there. This one is no exception.

Thank you to Kristen, Kim, and Donna from Hot Tree Editing for editing this book from start to finish.

To Becky Johnson at Hot Tree Promotions for your advice, expertise, and positivity.

Thank you, Dr. Kylie Sloan, DVM for your expertise and for helping me keep Sky alive. You’re an amazing veterinarian who always treats your patients with kindness. All of my pets thank you, as well.

Thanks, also, to my beta readers. Your feedback and patience is essential to this process.

And last, but certainly not least, I want to thank my mom, my rock, when I’m going bat-shit crazy. (Which happens far too often, sadly.)

  About the Author

Kayt grew up in the midwest surrounded by a loving family which included three brothers, one sister, and parents who always fostered her creative side.

Kayt wrote her first book when she couldn't find a story about a certain type of a woman and a specific kind of man. She called it Game Changer and it couldn't have been a more appropriate title. It changed her life in many ways.

Her goal, as a writer, is to write stories that relate to all of us, to make readers laugh and maybe cry sometimes. Kayt hopes her readers can escape into a fantasy, one that's actually possible. Sure, some of the stories are dubbed "Insta-love" but that's okay. She fell in love with her husband pretty damn fast and with her daughter the second I saw her. So, it's a thing, I swear.

  Thank you!

Thank you so much for reading Ben and Alison’s story! This process was so much fun. I knew, after reading Stuck-Up Suit by Vi Keeland and Penelope Ward, that Ben Schilling was going to be the inspiration for my spin-off story because he was mentioned only briefly in that story but something about him stuck. I wanted to know more.

That’s how a lot of stories start. Curiosity. I want to know more and more importantly, I want to share that new knowledge with you.

Stay tuned… I think Lucky and Meghan need a story too. Don’t you?

  Sneak Peek: Deadhead

  Bedhead Book Three

  Prologue

  Gage

I don’t remember a time when I didn’t want to be a cop. When I was little, my brother and I would play that game, Cops and Robbers, I was always the cop and my brother Graham, was always the robber. Funny how life works out. Now, Graham is always in some kind of trouble and I’m always bailing him out. Literally and figuratively. Luckily, he lives in Missouri, so I don’t have to witness any of it firsthand, or worse, arrest him.

But there are days, like today that I wish I did something else. Anything else. Hell, re-upping in the Army sounds pretty damn appealing after the shit that went down today. That’s because today I had to arrest a friend. Well, a friend of a friend, I guess you’d say. No, she’s a friend. Believe me, I tried to get out of it. I told the captain I knew the suspect personally, but he didn’t blink an eye. Instead of understanding, he snapped, “You’re the senior uniform on duty, Golden. Get out there and do your goddamn job.”

So, me and one of the rookies took off, heading to Tayler and Quinn’s place, with me hoping like hell Quinn wasn’t around for this. The second the door swung open and Tayler Sorenson smiled at me, my stomach flipped. Then, when she used her nicest voice and said, “Oh, hi, Gage. What’s up?”

Then, Luke Green appeared behind her. “Hey, man.”

For a second I forgot why I was there. I was supposed to be in cop-mode but that left me on the ride over, I guess. “Uh, hey.” Yeah, I said sounding like an idiot. As quickly as I could, I cleared my throat and did what I came to do. “Tayler Sorenson?”

She’s still smiling at me. God, this sucks. “Yes.”

“I need to ask you to come with us.”

Then, she laughs. She thinks this is a joke. Man, I wish it were. “Why?” she asks tilting her head just a little bit. I’d say it was adorable if any of this was fun.

Apparently, the rookie officer, Lance Finch, had enough of my hemming and hawing. “Tayler Sorenson, we’d like you to come with us. If you come with us willingly, we won’t cuff you.”

I wanted to cuff him, the jackass. That was unnecessary. I told him in the fucking squad car that I’d handle this––that I knew Taylor personally, but this guy just had to play bad cop whenever he gets the chance. The guy drives me nuts.

“Cuff her? What the fuck, Gage?” Luke snaps. “What’s going on?”

I get why he’s pissed. Hell, I’m angry about this too but I’ve got a job to do and I’m not about to let Finch take the lead on this. Looking at Tayler, I say, “Tayler, where were you last night between the hours of ten and midnight?”

  “Here.”

Okay. That’s good. She was home. This is going to be a piece of cake. Please, for the love of God, don’t tell me you were alone… I look at Luke. “Were you here as well, Mr. Green?”

  “No. I was at work.”

Not the answer I wanted so I shake my head because damn it. “You were alone, Ms. Sorenson?”

“Yes. I was alone until Luke got home.” She looks at Finch, then at me. “What’s going on?”

“Tayler Sorenson,” Finch starts up again, “you’re under arrest for the murder of Kara Becker.”

I want to punch this asshole.

“Murder?” Luke and Tayler say at the same time. “Under arrest?”

I want to give her some advice. If I could, I’d say things like “don’t say a word” or “just come with us now and get a good lawyer” but I can’t. Luckily, Luke says everything I’d say if she were mine. Which she isn’t. Neither is her best friend, Quinn. Sadly.

“Tayler,” Luke says to her, “I’ll call my lawyer. Just go with them. But, babe?” He sounds like he knows what he’s doing. “Say. Nothing.”

“But I didn’t do anything.” Her voice is a little whiney, but I get it. Mine would be too, probably. Besides, suspects always say that but I want to believe she’s telling the truth. I really do.

Luke repeats, “I know, but promise me you’ll wait for the attorney. I’ll be right behind you. Don’t worry, Tayler.”

I watch as Tayler reaches to her right to retrieve something. When she steps back in front of the opening, she’s got her purse. She’s still in sleepwear but she’s not wearing shoes. “Tayler, if you’d like to get dressed.” I look down at her feet. “And put on some shoes. We’ll wait.” Strange. It’s the second time in the last eight hours I’ve asked a woman to get dressed.

Rookie Finch makes a grunting noise, but I don’t even look his way. I’m so pissed at him; I won’t bother acknowledging him now. I’ll deal with him later.

  Chapter 1: Gage

  Several hours earlier.

“Nearest available unit. 10-42. 1320 Coconino Road. Apartment 2-1-3.”

I’m in west Ames so I know I’m likely the closest cruiser, so I press my radio button and respond. “10-42 received. En route.”

Finally, I’ve got something to do. I’ve driven around for the last three hours hoping for something to happen. No, I’m not hoping for somet
hing terrible to happen just something––anything. I’ll even take this 10-44, a welfare check. Something we do a lot of in this town. It happens when parents call us to check on their college kids because they won’t answer their phone or reply to text messages. I guess these kids are too busy. Either that or they’re afraid to talk to their folks. I’d guess the latter to be the case more often than not.

This welfare check is going to be something similar because 1320 Coconino Road is an apartment complex designed for student living. I looked at that place when I first moved to Ames, four years ago. It was brand new then and while it had a ton of cool amenities like several pools, a 24-7 fitness center, a dog park, and a social club, I couldn’t picture myself living amongst a bunch of college students partying all the time. And would they want a cop living above them? Probably not. No, at that time, I’d just left the Army and all I wanted was a quiet place to call home. It’s why I bought my small house instead of renting. That, and I was ready to put down some roots somewhere. I moved all over the place for four years as an M.P. or military police officer and I didn’t want to do that any longer. Now that I’ve been in this job for four years, I still feel that way most of the time. However, lately, I’m started to get a bit antsy. Like I’m ready for the next phase of my life. I’m ready for more.
